Appearance and personality
Octavia first appears in a broadcast to the miners. She praises their sacrifice and asks them to keep working for humanity’s future. Darrow has not yet learned that the surface is already inhabited.[1]
In person, Octavia is composed and courteous while she controls the room. Aja and the court enforce her decisions. When Darrow tries to leave their meeting, she makes it clear that he cannot simply refuse her.[2]
Attributes and abilities
As Sovereign, Octavia rules the Society. Even isolated miners hear her speeches, while the officials and soldiers beneath her enforce their labor.[1]
Octavia keeps the great houses dependent through appointments, favors, hostages and assassination. She even tries to control the conditions of the Oracle truth contest with Darrow. Her preparations do not make her infallible: Fitchner serves beside her while secretly leading the rebellion.[3]
Kalindora says Octavia used Pandemonium to erase Lysander’s memories after ordering his parents killed. The confession explains how she kept him from remembering his mother’s attempted coup, though it leaves gaps in his childhood.[4]
History
Book 1
Red Rising
Octavia’s address to the mining population supports the story that their labor prepares Mars for future settlement. When Darrow reaches the surface, the prosperous world already above the mines exposes the lie behind that appeal. He learns that Luna is the center of a hierarchy far larger than the local officials he knew.[1]
Book 2
Golden Son
At the gala, Octavia changes the terms of Darrow’s duel once Cassius is losing. Their subsequent audience strips away the appearance of neutral law: she offers Darrow an Olympic position, prevents his departure and tries to control a potentially lethal truth contest. The Oracles expose her denial that Nero’s party is in danger.
Octavia defends covert assassination as a way to replace a rebellious governor without disrupting helium supplies or provoking the other great houses. Lysander becomes a hostage during the escape from her forces. Later, she secretly comes to Mars and attempts to flee the fall of Agea. Fitchner’s rescue of Darrow reveals his betrayal of her, but she escapes the campaign alive.[5]
Book 3
Morning Star
Octavia’s regime combines military repression with concern about the propaganda produced by dead miners. She continues to use hostages, factional rivalries and loyal commanders to preserve her position. In the command bunker beneath Luna’s Citadel, she condemns Antonia for desertion and has Aja execute her.
Cassius’s apparent delivery of prisoners brings Darrow, Mustang and Sevro inside her defenses. Darrow stabs Octavia during the escape, and the group eventually overcomes Aja. Cassius confronts the dying Sovereign with proof that she commissioned his family’s murder and blamed the Sons. She dies defending necessary sacrifice and warning them about Adrius. Her death does not stop the nuclear attack he has prepared.[6]
Book 4
Iron Gold
Lysander remembers Octavia teaching him to use his extraordinary memory and the Mind’s Eye. He also remembers that she would not let him discuss his dead mother.[7]
Book 5
Dark Age
Kalindora confesses that Octavia ordered Lysander’s parents killed after his mother planned a coup. She says Octavia then used Pandemonium to erase his memories of his mother.[8]
Book 6
Light Bringer
Atlas finds the trail to Eidmi in Octavia’s archives. Lysander also remembers the Chair making him calm and leaving him unable to recall his parents.[9]
Relationships
Lysander au Lune
Octavia raises her grandson as the heir to House Lune. Her love for him gives Darrow a way to force her hand when he takes Lysander hostage during his escape.[10]
Lysander values the mental discipline she taught him. He also accepts her refusal to talk about his mother.[7]
Kalindora’s confession reveals how much Octavia hid from Lysander. She ordered his parents killed, then removed memories that might have turned him against her.[4]
Aja au Grimmus
Aja guards Octavia and enforces her decisions. She also protects Lysander, whose safety can force the Sovereign to change her plans.[3]
Aja executes Antonia on Octavia’s orders and fights to protect her in the bunker. She keeps fighting after Darrow mortally wounds the Sovereign.[11]
Cassius au Bellona
Octavia changes the rules when Cassius begins losing the gala duel. Later, he serves her believing the Sons destroyed his family.[12]
Cassius learns that Octavia ordered his family’s murder and blamed the Sons. He helps Darrow reach the bunker, then confronts her with the evidence as she dies.[13]
