Who is Lyria?

Lyria of Lagalos is an eighteen-year-old Gamma Red living in Assimilation Camp 121. She first reached the surface at sixteen, but her family still lives in poverty. They face prejudice against Gammas and wait for news of relatives fighting in the war.

Lyria gives us a view of the Republic from the people it has struggled to help. She looks after her family, takes domestic work and tries to keep her nephew Liam safe while leaders far away decide their future.

Appearance and personality

Lyria is small beside the Golds she later works for and used to the labor and cramped spaces of the mines. She is shot in the shoulder during the camp attack and suffers further injuries escaping captivity on Luna.

Grief and anger do not keep Lyria from acting. She returns for Liam, begins rescuing the wounded Kavax and refuses to disappear while Pax and Electra are still missing. As a Gamma, she also knows how it feels to be blamed for privileges and decisions she never chose.[1]

Attributes and abilities

Lyria’s early skills are practical: caring for children, reading danger in familiar environments and moving through confined spaces. Knowledge of mine ventilation helps her escape captivity on Luna. Literacy lessons with Kavax expand opportunities that the mines did not give her.

Lyria returns to the authorities despite being terrified of what they will do to her. Her testimony helps identify the kidnappers. Virginia learns more by listening to her than the interrogators did by assuming she was guilty.[2]

Fig transfers the device into Lyria without her consent. It changes her perception, warns her of some dangers and lets her use equipment, but it is damaged and unreliable. To rescue the Red Hand’s captives, Lyria also needs a disguise, climbing skills, the girls’ help and Vanna’s ability to use a radio.[3]

Matteo offers to repair the device, warning that the work could damage Lyria’s memories. She refuses because she wants to be able to tell Liam about their family. She asks for it to be removed and later melts it down. Afterward, she learns shipboard work, weapons handling, movement in space and enough piloting to help the crew.[4]

History

Book 4

Iron Gold

The Red Hand attack on Camp 121 kills much of Lyria’s family. She escapes, returns for Liam and helps save Kavax after he is wounded rescuing refugees. Refusing passive reassignment, she invokes his promise and gains passage to Luna as his valet.

Work on Luna gives Lyria a safer home, but she is still lonely and grieving. A Gray called Philippe befriends her after a wrongful arrest. He is actually Ephraim, and the gift he gives her hides the drone used to disable the shuttle carrying Pax and Electra.

Ephraim tries to shoot Lyria during the kidnapping, but the safety is on. He then takes her away and hides her from the Syndicate. She escapes through service spaces and approaches Republic guards because she will not abandon the children or Liam.

Virginia stops her unauthorized torture and listens. Lyria supplies information that identifies Ephraim and helps the recovery effort. The Sovereign later asks forgiveness for the Republic’s failure at the camp and promises care and restored eyesight for Liam. Before Lyria can settle into that new position, another abduction takes her out of Augustan custody.[5]

Book 5

Dark Age

Lyria is held in Victra’s abusive confinement, where sensory assault, sleeplessness and changing gravity undermine her ability to function. Written contact with Volga begins to break the isolation. When Ascomanni board Pandora, the women repeatedly save one another and escape with Victra and Fig.

After the crash on Mars, the dying Fig transfers the implant into Lyria. Lyria conceals the change while she, Volga and Victra flee the Red Hand. She refuses a revenge shot at Harmony because it could expose Volga and Victra’s unborn child. At a fishing village, she helps Victra through the birth of Ulysses.

The shelter is a trap. After the attack, Lyria finds Ulysses murdered and sees Victra and Volga taken away. She leaves the baby’s body in another family’s care and infiltrates the Red Hand’s forced-marriage system. Disguise, acid teeth and the help of other captives let her reach Victra and transmit a call for aid.

Lyria persuades Victra to save Volga and the girls before pursuing Harmony. Their rescue succeeds, though Lyria also chooses a cruel death for the woman responsible for her losses. Reunited with Volga, she imagines a life with her and Liam. Volga’s surrender to Fá interrupts that hope. Pax then directs Lyria toward the possible origin of her damaged implant.[6]

Book 6

Light Bringer

Lyria searches the asteroid belt with Fel’s crew. An attack destroys the Snowball and severs her hand; hidden defenses bring her to Quicksilver and Matteo, and the hand is reattached. She refuses repair of Figment when the possible price is losing the memory of her family, and chooses removal.

Lyria wants to find Volga in the Rim. Darrow refuses to take her, so she stows away on the Archimedes. Living with the crew lets her see how frightened and damaged the famous heroes can be. She earns a place among them, grows close to Cassius and Aurae, and later pilots a rescue while Diomedes works the guns.

Reports that Volga commands under Fá do not make Lyria abandon her friend. She enters the enemy gathering to reach her, then confronts the violence Volga has accepted. During the Passage of the Stains, invoking Ephraim as Volga’s chosen father helps make her refuse the final killing.

After Fá’s defeat, Lyria refuses to help Volga run away. She tells her their friendship depends on returning to the people she hurt. Volga agrees, is elected leader and joins the Covenant. Lyria also helps persuade her to bring aid to the Garter after Lysander’s attack.[7]

Relationships

Kavax au Telemanus

Kavax rescues refugees during the camp attack. When he is wounded in the river, Lyria helps save him. She later asks him to honor his promise of help, gaining work on Luna and lessons in reading, though she still feels isolated in the household.[8]

Ephraim ti Horn

Ephraim poses as Philippe to exploit Lyria’s loneliness and reach the children. When she learns about Trigg, she understands some of his grief. She challenges him to remember the person he loved instead of using that loss to justify hurting others.[9]

Volga

Volga helps Ephraim abduct the children and take Lyria away. Their later friendship begins after that betrayal.[10]

They start talking through letters while Victra holds them prisoner. During the escape from Pandora, they repeatedly save each other. Lyria later goes back into the Red Hand’s base to free Volga.[11]

Lyria risks her life to reach Volga, then confronts her about serving Fá. She will stay her friend only if Volga faces what she has done.[12]

Victra au Julii

Victra imprisons and mistreats Lyria before they escape together. Lyria helps her give birth, then returns to save her after Ulysses’s death. Invoking the baby’s memory, she persuades Victra to rescue the captive girls before going after Harmony.[13]

Cassius au Bellona

Cassius makes Lyria welcome aboard the Archimedes. Her experience as a Gamma helps her understand being judged for a reputation. She pays attention to how he treats her and what he does for others.[14]
