Appearance and personality
Pax is enormous, strong and fond of shouting his full name as he charges. He greets friends with the same enthusiasm, sometimes forgetting how much damage an embrace can do.
Early in the Institute, Pax fights in heavy armor and a helmet. Later he goes shirtless, carries a long wooden club and paints his hair white, shaping it into two tufts like horns.[1]
Attributes and abilities
Heavy armor, a shield and an axe suit his strength, but they do not make him unbeatable. Darrow defeats him by distraction and by exploiting his helmet rather than meeting his power directly. In coordinated attacks, Pax can move heavy obstacles and frighten defenders while more subtle fighters create the opening.[1]
History
Book 1
Red Rising
Pax nearly incapacitates Darrow in a crushing embrace during the clash with Minerva. A flanking force turns the battle and leaves him captured. Their later yielding duel again shows the gap in physical strength, but Darrow wins by exploiting the limits of Pax’s equipment.
When Mustang joins Darrow, Pax welcomes the alliance. He helps carry a tree used to break into a stronghold and takes part in the shared punishment after Tactus’s attack on Nyla.
During the Jackal’s apparent surrender, Pax joins the counter-plan against the enemy force concealed outside. He returns after that part succeeds, only for the confrontation inside to turn lethal. After the sonic blast, he shields Darrow from Adrius and dies protecting him. Darrow survives because Pax chooses to put his body between them.[1]
Book 2
Golden Son
Darrow names a captured warship Pax. Kavax and Daxo welcome him and tell him they do not blame him for their son and brother’s death. Mustang also grieves, wondering whether placing Pax in another Institute House could have saved him.[2]
