Matt Dinniman is writing the end of Dungeon Crawler Carl, and it has apparently gotten too big to fit into a single book.
During San Diego Comic-Con, Dinniman explained that he is approaching Books 9 and 10 as one continuous story, even though they will ultimately be released separately.
“I’m writing two books right now,” Dinniman said during the panel. “I’m writing it personally as a single book, but it’s gonna be released separately as two books.”
Books 9 and 10 are being written together
Up to this point, each Dungeon Crawler Carl book has had its own major arc while still pushing Carl and Donut deeper into the larger story.
Because Dinniman is writing Books 9 and 10 together, he doesn’t have to force Book 9 into a neat stopping point simply because one volume is ending. In fact, he joked at Comic-Con that this gives him the chance to leave readers hanging before the final release.
That probably means Book 9 and Book 10 are better thought of as Part One and Part Two of the finale rather than two completely separate adventures.
The working title is: The Beautiful Place
The current working title for Book 9 is The Beautiful Place.
Dinniman made that official on Patreon in June when he posted the opening material for the next book.
“Today’s two chapters will be the prologue to Dungeon Crawler Carl, book 9, The Beautiful Place. (Working title),” Dinniman wrote in the Patreon post.
At Comic-Con, Dinniman acknowledged that he still hasn’t completely figured out how he wants to handle the titles now that the ending is being split into two releases.
So The Beautiful Place is the name attached to the project right now, but it could certainly change between now and it’s eventual release.
Book 9 is already being written
In that same June Patreon update, Dinnimin said he had already written “quite a bit” of Book 9 and was starting to put the pieces together into a more finalized form.
The prologue has already been posted for Patreon supporters, confirming that active writing is well underway.
For now, there is still no confirmed publication date for either part of the finale.
