Matt Dinniman and Jeff Hays have shared a preview of Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 9, introducing a new crawler during New York Comic Con. Audible posted the recording on October 8, with Hays reading a short scene from the next novel.
The official preview runs for about a minute and a half. Before the reading, Dinniman says the newcomer probably isn’t the crawler readers who have finished Book 8 are expecting.
Spoiler warning: The details below cover the Book 9 excerpt and the crawler count after Book 8, A Parade of Horribles.
What the Book 9 preview reveals
Dinniman says there are 13 crawlers left, then explains that this is someone readers haven’t met before. Hays’ reading introduces Tabiti, crawler number 12,953,455. She appears to be a child at first glance, and her information lists her as level one, with the race human and the class subjugator.
Beside her is Ferdinand, described as a scraggly orange cat with his ears flattened against his head. Donut’s response is to set a rule: nobody is to put their paws on Ferdinand without her permission.
That leaves Tabiti’s background and arrival unexplained. The clip gives readers a name, a crawler number and a brief encounter, but it does not establish how she entered the dungeon or what her role in the rest of the book will be.
The Beautiful Place is still a working title
Dinniman called Book 9 The Beautiful Place in his June 16 Patreon update, explicitly labeling it a working title. He said he had already written quite a bit of the next book and was beginning to put the material together. The post introduced its prologue.
Audible’s October preview does not announce a publication date or a finished title. October 8 is the date the recording was posted, not a release date for the novel.
The reading follows Dinniman’s earlier explanation that he is writing Books 9 and 10 together for separate releases. Our Books 9 and 10 update covers those plans for the series finale.
