Light Bringer: the story so far

Light Bringer begins with Darrow and the survivors of Mercury stranded far from home. Their effort to return runs alongside the defense of Mars, Lysander’s rise and Lyria’s search for Volga. The recap below follows all eighty-nine chapters and the choices that reshape their alliances.

Chapter-by-chapter recap

Full spoilers for Light Bringer. This recap does not reveal events from later novels.

Part I: Circus

Chapter 1: Castaway

Darrow is stranded with the survivors Cassius rescued from Mercury. Enemy ships forced them to shelter at an old Sons of Ares base inside a trash moon made from compacted terraforming waste. Their damaged ship, the Archimedes, needs repairs and fuel before they can return to Mars.

Cassius and Aurae, the Pink who helped Cassius escape from the Rim, have been gone for six weeks searching for helium. Darrow has no news of his wife, Virginia, their son, Pax, or the war. He imagines revenge against Lysander, but knows it cannot restore the Free Legions or undo his own mistakes.

Aurae left him a book that helped her endure slavery. Its teachings and the companionship of working beside the survivors begin to ease his despair. He lets himself think about the family he wants to return to.

Chapter 2: The Book

After eight months in hiding, hope is wearing thin. Screwface spent three years infiltrating the Society. He was scalped and lost a leg when Heliopolis fell on Mercury. He now feels abandoned by the Republic and resents Sevro for leaving the war to save his family. Darrow recognizes his own bitterness in those complaints, but asks Screwface to bring them privately instead of spreading despair.

Cassius has explained how he survived the duels on Io. Diomedes secretly protected him on the condition that he stay until the war ended, but Aurae helped him escape. Some survivors still fear she could be a Rim spy.

Darrow trains despite his damaged arm and lung, listens to Aurae's book in a recreation of Virginia's voice, and records his life for Pax in case he never reaches him. Then a warship bearing House Votum's identity approaches.

Chapter 3: Revenants

Before Darrow can attack the ship, Screwface receives a friendly message. Cassius has returned with the pilot Colloway Char and more than two thousand survivors from Mercury.

Mars still stands, with Virginia governing from Agea and Darrow's brother Kieran serving as ArchGovernor. But Fá, who claims to be Ragnar's father, has killed Sefi and taken much of the Obsidian fleet away. The Rim has also sent two great armadas to join the war against the Republic.

Colloway's people escaped through smugglers and stole the ship that brought them here. His account of those left to slavery, starvation and execution forces Darrow to confront what followed his escape. Rhonna's fate remains unknown.

Cassius and Aurae have brought the fuel they need. Cassius also knows Sevro is alive, but the Syndicate has sold him.

Chapter 4: The Sordid Affair

The buyer was Apollonius, the Gold warlord known as the Minotaur. In a recording, he challenges Darrow to come to the dockyards orbiting Venus or watch Sevro be hunted through an arena. The message has been running for two months.

The others want Darrow to return to Virginia now that they finally have a way home. Darrow argues that attacking the dockyards could delay the enemy and distract patrols from the survivors' escape. More simply, he loves Sevro and refuses to abandon him.

Cassius wants to help. He carries guilt for killing Fitchner, Sevro's father, and wants to fight for the cause Fitchner began. Aurae insists on joining as their escape pilot. They take an atomic warhead as insurance against a trap, and Thraxa gives Darrow her razor, Bad Lass, to replace his broken weapon.

Darrow orders the other survivors to leave for Mars when he signals from Venus. They let him go without sharing his confidence.

Chapter 5: Games

On Mercury, Lysander celebrates the Society's victory while trying to build enough power to escape Atalantia's control. She still holds his family fortune. He knows she helped murder his parents and suspects she also killed Kalindora.

Glirastes, the engineer who helped him defeat Darrow, wants him to focus on rebuilding. Lysander instead secretly supplies Apollonius with soldiers and restores Darrow's captured flagship as the Lightbringer.

Horatia au Votum oversees the restoration and helps him win support among the Two Hundred, the Society's ruling families. Her brother Cicero is another ally, but Lysander still needs the wealth of Cassius's mother, Julia Bellona.

He also courts Valeria of House Carthii, whose family wants its Venus dockyards back. He hopes to gain their support while secretly helping Apollonius occupy their property.

Chapter 6: Mortal Concerns

Darrow and Cassius infiltrate the Venus dockyards while Aurae stays aboard the Archimedes to prepare their escape and place the atomic. Disguised as Apollonius's soldiers, they force an architect to search the prison records, then reach the cell where they believe Sevro is held.

The prisoner is a Gray made to resemble Sevro. When the cell door begins closing, Cassius jumps inside rather than leave Darrow trapped alone. The artificial gravity forces Darrow to the floor, worsening his injured arm. Apollonius welcomes them over the speakers.

Chapter 7: The Ally Idiot

Apollonius's brother Tharsus tells Lysander that Darrow and Cassius have been captured. Lysander is relieved Cassius survived, but hurt that his former guardian has joined Darrow. He considers returning Cassius to Julia in exchange for her support.

Lysander then meets Diomedes and Helios au Lux, commander of the Rim's Dust Armada. Diomedes admits he protected Cassius because the way Cassius was treated on Io disgraced the Rim. Helios wants the Core to attack Mars and end the war. He is heading to Atalantia's summit on Earth, where Lysander has not been invited.

Atlas interrupts with orders to inspect Lysander's finances, threatening to expose his support for Apollonius. Although Atlas belongs to the Raa family, the Rim leaders regard his service to the Core as betrayal. He warns Lysander against interfering with plans already underway.

Chapter 8: The Hanging Coliseum

Apollonius brings Darrow and Cassius into his arena, but refuses to produce Sevro. Darrow threatens to detonate their atomic, only to learn it has been found. Their ship remains hidden, but their bargaining weapon is gone.

Apollonius offers freedom if Darrow defeats him. Darrow fights with the Willow Way Lorn taught him, but his injuries leave him slower and weaker than Apollonius, who also knows how to counter the style.

Apollonius wounds him repeatedly and drives a blade into his chest. Darrow cannot overcome the difference through determination alone. Before Apollonius can kill him, an explosion shakes the station. It cannot be the bomb they brought.

Chapter 9: Shit Escalates

The blast came from one of Apollonius's own bombs, which he uses to threaten the dockyards. House Carthii rejects his claim of sabotage and uses the blast as an excuse to attack. Apollonius keeps Darrow alive for another duel and Cassius for his value to Julia, taking them along as his soldiers resist the invasion.

When the fighting overwhelms their position, Darrow and Cassius break free, but cannot escape the surrounding troops. Sevro appears in an armored war machine and leads them through the station. His traps suggest he has been fighting Apollonius from hiding for some time.

Darrow contacts Aurae, and Sevro gets them outside for the Archimedes to recover them. Once aboard, he settles Darrow in the medical bay and presses his forehead to his wounded friend's.

Chapter 10: Iron Fist

The Lightbringer rises over Mercury under the command of Pytha, the pilot who once traveled with Cassius but chose to remain with Lysander. The restored flagship gives Lysander the strength to challenge the other Gold houses.

Julia's envoy tells Lysander he must prove himself before receiving her money. Lysander hints that he could return Cassius. Then Apollonius demands reinforcements at Venus. Sending them openly would expose their alliance, so Lysander privately promises Valeria leadership of House Carthii in exchange for her cooperation. She accepts.

Atlas arrives with Atalantia's authority, kills Tharsus in front of the guests and blames Apollonius for breaking the dockyard truce. He summons Lysander to Earth for an inquiry.

Lysander orders Horatia and Rhone, his chief bodyguard, to execute his contingency plan and tells Glirastes to hide. Atlas takes him away, cuts off his communications and has him beaten.

Chapter 11: Inheritance

Sevro is back aboard the Archimedes, but wants only to return to his family. He describes the Howlers murdered by the Abomination, the clone of Adrius. He says the Abomination never carried out the threat to erase his memories, though he does not know why.

Hearing about Mercury, Sevro blames their past mercy toward enemies. Darrow refuses to believe killing every opponent would fulfill Eo's dream. He apologizes for making Sevro choose between family and war and accepts that his friend wants to go home.

Aurae reveals she serves Athena, leader of the Daughters of Ares, a secret resistance Fitchner founded in the Rim. A recording from Fitchner explains that he hoped Sevro would not have to inherit his war. Athena now offers Sevro the organization's ships and resources and asks him to lead as Ares.

Aurae's book, The Path to the Vale, belonged to Sevro's mother and grandmother. Darrow knows Athena's people may hate him for surrendering the Rim Sons to Romulus. He proposes having Virginia assess the offer, then going himself so Sevro can return home.

Cassius offers to retrain Darrow now that his enemies have learned the Willow Way. Darrow accepts, then reads aloud from the book until Sevro sleeps.

Part II: Rampart

Chapter 12: Truffle Pig

Lyria searches the asteroid belt for someone who can repair the damaged implant in her head. Pax suspects its creators are connected to Quicksilver, the industrialist who funded the Rising. Lyria hopes its powers can help her find and protect her Obsidian friend Volga.

A Republic scouting crew accompanies her. After they discover a hidden hangar, Rim soldiers attack, destroy their ship and overwhelm the scouts. Lyria loses a hand, and the scouts' leader, Fel, is captured and mutilated.

Defenses suddenly emerge from the asteroid and destroy the attackers. Lyria sends an emergency message to Mars without knowing whether it gets through. A machine approaches and addresses her as sister, apparently recognizing her implant.

Chapter 13: The Rose’s Game

Lyria wakes with her hand reattached. Matteo, Quicksilver's husband and Darrow's former teacher, welcomes her, but tells her Fel is dead.

Her implant is a psyche, an artificial intelligence Quicksilver commissioned to let one person control machines, potentially entire armies. Its inventor feared that power. According to Matteo, she released six prototypes, destroyed the finished version and killed herself. Lyria carries one of the damaged early models.

Matteo can repair it, but the procedure could cost Lyria her memories and the feelings attached to them. She refuses. Her nephew Liam is too young to remember their murdered family, and she wants to be able to tell him who they were. She asks Matteo to remove the implant instead.

Matteo also forwards her message to Mars, though he doubts its leaders can persuade Quicksilver to help them again. Darrow might, if he is still alive.

Chapter 14: The Armor of Love

Virginia sends senatorial emissaries to seek Quicksilver after receiving Lyria's message. His company's hidden spending suggests an arsenal that could change the war.

She visits Pax at the naval school founded by Orion. He chose to train there, but its separation from family has widened the distance between them. He initially greets her as Sovereign.

Pax thinks the senators will fail. After the Vox murdered Quicksilver's friends and attacked his property, Darrow may be the only person Quicksilver will trust. Pax offers to go in his father's place, but Virginia refuses to send him into enemy territory.

She tells him she is proud of him and sorry for the war he has inherited. Pax values the chance to fight for something better than the submission his parents knew. They embrace, and he asks her to concentrate on winning.

Chapter 15: Earth

Atalantia has Lysander's burn scar removed, stripping away the mark he used to present himself as a soldier. On Earth, she tells him his troops will help invade Luna first. He argues for Mars, but she intends to let the Rim and Republic weaken each other while she preserves her strength.

Atlas produces Glirastes, collared and abused. Atalantia knows about Lysander's secret army and uses his friend to force his obedience. She makes Lysander promise Glirastes protection and orders him to sit silently beside her at the summit. If he opposes her, she will have Glirastes skinned.

Later, Lysander tries to turn Ajax against her by revealing that she murdered Lysander's parents. Atalantia has already warned Ajax that Lysander would make the accusation. Torn between them, Ajax leaves without deciding whom to believe.

Chapter 16: The Two Hundred

At the summit in Rome, Atalantia announces she has sent troops to help House Carthii recover its dockyards. Lysander expects her to take control of them herself.

Dido, Diomedes and Helios demand that she honor the alliance's agreement to attack Mars. The Rim has spent its forces while she rebuilds her own. Lysander has arranged for his allies to remain conspicuously silent, making the assembly look frightened into obedience.

Atalantia still announces the assault on Luna and presents Lysander's place in the vanguard as an honor he requested. The Rim delegation walks out. Horatia signals that their dockyard bargain is ready, and Lysander stands to speak.

Chapter 17: Mars Must Fall

With Horatia's supporters behind him and Julia defending his right to speak, Lysander calls the Rim leaders back. He urges Gold to put aside its rivalries and attack Mars together, then nominates Apollonius to lead the assault.

Atalantia expects Apollonius to remain trapped at Venus. Instead, a recording shows him beside Valeria, who reports her father dead and claims leadership of House Carthii. Their negotiated ceasefire returns the dockyards to her and frees Apollonius to join Lysander's campaign.

The agreement removes Atalantia's excuse to seize the yards. Lysander wins a majority, and she lets his coalition proceed while keeping her own fleet at Luna.

He confronts her about his parents. Her reaction convinces Ajax, who stays to support him. Defying Atalantia also leaves Glirastes at her mercy. She tells Lysander his friend will pay for his political victory.

Chapter 18: The Returned

The survivors from Darrow's hidden base reach Mars. Screwface breaks down when Virginia embraces him and recognizes what he endured for the Republic. They confirm Darrow survived Mercury, but do not know whether his attempt to rescue Sevro succeeded.

Virginia wants to search for Darrow and Sevro, but Colloway reports hundreds of enemy warships gathering only six days away. Interference with the Republic's sensors has concealed the invasion.

She recalls the ships that can still reach Mars and prepares its defenses. General Harnassus, Colloway, Thraxa and Screwface all volunteer to fight despite their exhaustion.

Chapter 19: Rising Dirge

Before the battle, Virginia and the commanders gather in Lykos. Darrow's mother, Deanna, names the family members taken by its gallows and calls on every Color to defend the freedom to live as families and choose their futures. Reds smash the gallows, and she covers the commanders' sigils with Martian mud.

Thraxa now commands Darrow's veteran Pegasus Legion. Victra urges them to make the enemy remember the Free Legions, but Virginia asks her to preserve herself instead of seeking revenge against Apollonius. Beneath Victra's fury are Sevro's captivity and the murder of their baby, Ulysses. Neither woman knows whether her husband will return.

Chapter 20: Nucleus

Virginia takes command from the Nucleus, the military control center inside Phobos. The moon protects the shipyards needed to maintain the Republic's fleet, and its civilians have not finished evacuating. Warships and fixed defenses protect one another, so chasing the enemy would leave both exposed.

Victra commands the northern fleet, Niobe the southern force, and Colloway guards Phobos. Lysander trails the approaching enemy aboard the Lightbringer. Intelligence reports describe it as poorly armed and underpowered, but Virginia doubts that appearance.

At first, the enemy seems ready to rush past the defenses and land on Mars. Then its ships slow down, leaving her uncertain of their purpose.

Chapter 21: Petard

The enemy circles Mars, probing its defenses. Lysander appears to mishandle an attack, but Virginia refuses to let Victra chase him.

A devastating barrage strikes the northern defenses. The Core and Rim have restored the Twins, Earth's immense orbital railguns, and fired days in advance. Their movements around Mars were designed to draw Victra's fleet into the shots.

Battle stations fall, and the enemy attacks through the northern gap. Virginia sends Niobe and Colloway to save Victra's ships, leaving Phobos without its mobile protection. As the moon moves into alignment with Lysander's fleet, she suspects the Lightbringer is far more dangerous than reported.

Chapter 22: Iron, Death, Gold

Lysander prepares to assault Phobos with machines that will drill through its defenses and deliver troops inside. He gives his white cape to the Red miners operating them, offering recognition that angers Gray soldiers who consider the Reds beneath them.

Ajax joins his force and explains why he stayed. He believes Atalantia murdered Lysander's parents and considers Lysander family. The loyalty means more to Lysander than another military alliance.

Alone in the launch tube, Lysander loses the composure he showed his soldiers. He vomits, unable to reach the heightened focus of the Mind's Eye, and waits for the assault to begin.

Chapter 23: Grim Glory

Lysander sends destroyers crashing toward Phobos's shield. The guns tear them apart, but their wrecks keep coming. To prevent an overload that would disable the whole system, Virginia lowers the shield and lets the last ship strike an incompletely evacuated district. Buildings and civilians are destroyed.

The Lightbringer moves above Bastion One and launches its assault drills. Virginia needs the shield restored before the attackers gain too much ground. When she speaks to the repair crew, they volunteer to work in lethal radiation.

The drills can carry soldiers past the fortified surface into Phobos's interior. Virginia orders her troops to contain the breaches. Kavax prepares to lead armored war machines against the breach entrances once the shield returns. Before leaving, he entrusts her with Sophocles, his fox.

Chapter 24: Drop Shock

Lysander lands above a Green woman's window as his assault drill cuts into her apartment complex. She gestures defiantly before the machine's heat kills her. After feeling helpless under the defenders' guns, Lysander enjoys standing above someone more vulnerable.

Half the drills are lost, but the rest open shafts into Phobos. When the shield returns, the attackers are cut off from support and Kavax's war machines advance to seal the breaches and trap them inside.

Rhone urges Lysander to trust the men holding the surface. Ajax calls the attack the violence needed for peace. Lysander pictures the life he hopes to have after the war, then follows his troops down.

Chapter 25: War Prism

Virginia tries to contain the invaders, but they break through toward Sector One's shield reactor. She sends Lionguards to stop them without success.

The Lightbringer pulls away to reveal Apollonius and Cicero arriving with reinforcements. The sector's shield fails, letting their forces and ships from Diomedes's fleet enter. Kavax stops answering. Virginia orders a retreat from the lost sector into the neighboring ones.

The Nucleus can detach as a spherical escape pod and descend through a shaft to the Hollows, the deeper region still held by the Republic. Virginia stays long enough to organize the withdrawal, then agrees to leave. Before they descend, Apollonius calls from Kavax's war machine, claims to have broken him and says he is coming for her.

Chapter 26: Labyrinth

Enemy fire damages the Nucleus's heat protection. The sphere begins descending but jams in the shaft. The air becomes hot enough to burn the unarmored command staff. Virginia's guards force her into an emergency lift while her bodyguard, Holiday, tries to save the operator, Oro. He is left dying behind them.

Virginia and the surviving guards escape into maintenance corridors with Apollonius pursuing them. A captured officer says Kavax is alive with a broken back. Virginia decides to ambush Apollonius and capture him for an exchange.

Her guards restrain him, but he pulls a guard into Holiday's way as she tries to sedate him. The guard takes the dose, and Apollonius wounds Holiday with a horn on his helmet. Virginia orders him killed, but a grenade breaks the trap before they can finish him. She pulls Holiday away, and the survivors retreat again.

Chapter 27: A Good Death

Surrounded and unable to reach safety, Holiday offers to die buying Virginia time to escape. Virginia instead frees condemned Obsidian rebels from a nearby prison, including Valdir, one of Darrow's former warriors.

Valdir believes Darrow is dead. She tells him Darrow survived, appeals to his hope of forgiveness and admits she needs help to see Pax again. She promises the prisoners freedom if they escape and a worthy death if they cannot.

They accept. Using camouflage cloaks, razors and the tunnel-fighting methods Darrow described to Virginia, the Obsidians break the encirclement. Only Valdir and ten others survive, but they free the Lionguards. Together, they escape through the waste system toward hydroponic farms inside the moon, above the Hollows.

Chapter 28: War Engine

Lysander's force has captured Sector One's shield reactor. He coordinates the advance with Diomedes and Horatia until Victra lands troops behind their lines.

He orders Cicero's reserves to cut her off, then discovers Cicero has joined Apollonius in hunting Virginia. Lysander had granted Apollonius the hunt in exchange for his political support, but Cicero was supposed to hold the reserve. Lysander orders both men back before Victra and a counterattack from the Hollows can trap his army.

Ajax offers to take a small force of Golds through the fighting and kill Victra. He argues they cannot afford a prolonged siege or another opening for Atalantia to take control. Lysander accepts the gamble and continues advancing.

Chapter 29: Pity Them

Virginia's group reaches the farms, where she can call for help. Harnassus arrives from the Hollows with an armored force. Screwface explains that Victra's attack forced their pursuers back and gave them time to escape.

Now Victra is behind enemy lines herself, beyond the rescuers' reach. She sends a defiant message, confident she can face the enemies surrounding her.

Screwface offers Valdir and his surviving warriors a place among the Howlers, and Valdir accepts. Virginia thanks her exhausted guards, then returns to command.

Chapter 30: Edge of Glory

Lysander reaches Diomedes, hoping their combined forces can surround the Hollows. Rhone interrupts with news of Ajax.

Victra's apparent position was a decoy. She and another knight ambushed Ajax's smaller force with Obsidians. A drone recording shows his companions dead and the two fighters overwhelming him. Diomedes identifies Victra's companion as Thraxa. Victra cuts Ajax down and takes his head.

Lysander watches the death of the friend who chose him over Atalantia. Cicero's fate is still unknown, and Apollonius has withdrawn. Diomedes concludes they have advanced too far and must pull back.

Lysander expected Phobos to open the way for an invasion of Mars within a month. Instead, Ajax is dead and Glirastes is at Atalantia's mercy. The ships, soldiers and money Lysander has spent have won him only a foothold.

Chapter 31: Détente

Twelve days into the battle, Phobos has become a costly stalemate. Visiting the crowded hospitals, Virginia sees how much the wounded still depend on Darrow's return. Holiday warns her not to become accustomed to their suffering.

Victra and Thraxa return from behind enemy lines with Cicero as their prisoner and Ajax's severed head.

Chapter 32: Parley

Virginia secretly meets Lysander on Phobos. Both recognize that continuing to exhaust their armies will only help Atalantia. Lysander offers safe withdrawal to Mars if Virginia leaves the shipyards intact and hands over their defense codes. She negotiates Kavax's release in exchange for Cicero and agrees to return Ajax's head.

Lysander plans to give the docks to Apollonius, keeping him strong enough to balance Julia Bellona. He hopes their combined support will let him strip Atalantia of her political protections and challenge her to a duel for murdering his parents.

Virginia's commanders resist surrendering the yards, but she intends to shelter the surviving fleet on Mars and exploit those Gold rivalries. They accept the bargain. Kavax returns alive, and his family gathers around him.

Chapter 33: Master of the Spoils

As the Republic leaves Phobos, Lysander honors his soldiers. A burned Red driller returns Lysander's white cape, and Lysander promises him a place in his household. Golds join his service as New Shepherds.

Julia objects to Apollonius receiving the docks. Lysander promises her Mars and proposes an Iron Rain in three days. Dido agrees to remain and protect their campaign against Atalantia. Diomedes also supports Lysander, believing the Rim needs a dependable partner in the increasingly powerful Core.

While they speak, blood begins running from Lysander's eyes. He recognizes the agony of Lament, a deadly poison, and assumes Atalantia sent it. He cannot tell how it reached him.

Chapter 34: Remember Earth

Virginia finally contacts Darrow aboard the Archimedes. He is only days from Mars with Sevro and Cassius, but she refuses to send ships through the blockade to bring him home. Half the fleet is lost, and the survivors must shelter beneath the planetary shields.

Darrow has no army to bring with him, and trapping him inside the siege would leave them with fewer ways to win. Virginia will hold Mars while he stays outside and finds help. She believes Quicksilver might listen to him.

Darrow admits that leaving Luna for one final push was a mistake, and that shutting away his feelings has hurt their marriage. Instead of insisting on returning, he accepts her decision and asks for orders.

Chapter 35: Winds of Duty

Virginia sends Darrow to the asteroid where Lyria found Quicksilver. Hidden shipments suggest he has built weapons that could change the war, but the ships sent to investigate have fallen out of contact. Darrow must persuade him to help, using force if necessary. Virginia rejects the lengthy detour to Athena.

Sevro cannot speak to Victra because she is already beneath Mars's shields. He accuses Virginia of abandoning him in captivity. She says she barely escaped herself, but he walks away. Cassius remains, and she appoints him Morning Knight of the Republic.

The connection ends before Darrow finishes his message to Pax. As they turn away from Mars, he leaves Sevro food and an apology for breaking his promise to bring him home.

Chapter 36: Jurisdiction

Pytha and Cicero wake Lysander from his medically induced coma despite Rhone's objections. Fá has invaded the Rim and destroyed the fleet sent to stop him. Diomedes must return home and asks Lysander to repay the help they gave him at Phobos.

Lysander cancels the Iron Rain. Julia and Apollonius will maintain the siege of Mars while his ships follow him to Jupiter. He goes ahead aboard Diomedes's ship with Rhone and nine other guards, the most Helios will allow.

Rhone has chosen the escort himself, and Lysander's bodyguard Kyber is not among them. He says a sniper wounded her, but she survived.

Part III: Tempest

Chapter 37: Cacophony

On the voyage to Quicksilver's asteroid, Darrow trains with Cassius, writes to Pax, and studies The Path with Aurae. He is learning to face his failures without letting them control his next decision. Sevro remains withdrawn, making knives marked with his enemies' names.

When they reach the asteroid thirty-six days later, small craft escort the Archimedes inside, and Matteo welcomes them over the communications screen.

Chapter 38: Tabula Rasa

Matteo embraces Darrow, and they grieve for the friends they have lost. Quicksilver is less welcoming. After mobs on Luna murdered his workers, he no longer trusts the Republic or its people. He refuses to give Darrow the fleet he came for.

Instead, Quicksilver reveals a garden inside the asteroid, where machines are raising children who belong to no Color. This is Tabula Rasa, a generation ship built to leave the solar system. He wants the children to grow up free of the hierarchy that shaped everyone he knows.

The missing resources went into this ship, not a navy. Sevro storms out, furious that their journey has been wasted. Darrow stays to understand.

Chapter 39: Under the Golden Gaze

Quicksilver tells Darrow about his former partner and their four adopted children. A Gold creditor's family ruined them, then murdered the children. Forced to choose which partner would survive, Quicksilver chose himself. He eventually took revenge, leaving the Gold creditor alive in a prison pod drifting through space.

His shame and hatred have kept him from meeting the children aboard Tabula Rasa. He fears passing his own damage on to them. Darrow urges him to end the prisoner's suffering and become a father instead of watching from a distance. Quicksilver admits he has long thought of Darrow as a son. Despite his disappointment, Darrow forgives him.

Quicksilver can offer repairs, equipment, and intelligence, but most of his ships were dismantled to build Tabula Rasa. His telescope records show the Rim fleets returning to Jupiter, where Fá is invading.

Darrow decides to use that chaos to reach Athena. Aurae warns that the invitation was for Sevro. Darrow betrayed the Rim's Sons to Romulus, and their survivors may want him dead. He accepts the risk, but leaves Sevro free to go home.

Chapter 40: Departure

Lyria has recovered from the surgery with her memories apparently intact. Matteo shows her the removed implant, and she chooses to have it destroyed.

She asks to join Darrow because traveling to the Rim might let her reach Volga. He refuses to take an untrained civilian into the war and sends her to a ship bound for Mars. Sevro is its other passenger.

When Lyria offers condolences for Ulysses, she discovers Sevro knows nothing about his baby's death. He grabs her and demands answers. She explains helping Victra give birth, then losing the boy to the Red Hand. Sevro releases her, gives her a message for Virginia, and leaves in shock.

Lyria leaves his message aboard the Mars-bound ship and slips away toward the Archimedes.

Chapter 41: To the Stars

Darrow's mobility and flexibility improve after lightwave treatment. Quicksilver repairs the Archimedes and supplies new Godkiller armor, then gives Darrow the Twilight Helm, a black helmet made for Fitchner. He asks Darrow to wear it as Ares, but Darrow will face Athena before claiming that role.

Quicksilver refuses Cassius's offered hand. He has not forgiven Fitchner's death and blames Cassius for letting Lysander become a threat to the Republic. He questions whether Cassius could bear seeing Lysander killed.

Darrow believes Sevro has left for Mars, until Sevro arrives carrying weapons. He says he cannot go home yet. Darrow welcomes him, and the Archimedes leaves for the Rim.

Chapter 42: Rat in the Machine

Sevro catches Lyria stealing food after nine days hidden aboard the Archimedes. Darrow stops him from hauling her into an airlock, and Aurae argues that Lyria's friendship with Volga could help them.

Lyria reminds Darrow that Fá killed Ephraim, who was like Volga's father, so they cannot assume she wants to stay with Fá. Darrow lets Lyria join the crew and allows her to try reaching Volga if an opportunity arises without endangering their mission.

Cassius gives her a cabin and welcomes her. When she sees how much his reputation hurts him, she recognizes the feeling of being judged as a Gamma. Their friendship begins.

Chapter 43: Fragment of Immensity

During the voyage to Jupiter, Diomedes commands the Dustmaker while Helios scouts ahead. A medicinal leech from Dido filters toxins from Lysander's blood, easing the effects of Lament.

Lysander learns that Demeter's Garter, the agricultural belt on Io, produces most of the Rim's food. Fá now has modern warships capable of threatening it.

The returning fleet will gather at the moon Kalyke before approaching Io under cover of Jupiter's moons. Lysander worries that the ships will be dangerously close together with their shields lowered to avoid detection. Diomedes trusts Helios's preparations.

Chapter 44: Grapes and Iron

Helios reports that Sungrave, the Raa capital on Io, and the Garter are holding. He provides the correct security codes, boards the Dustmaker, and takes command.

Diomedes hands Helios the Cestus, a command gauntlet that controls the ship. It checks Helios's blood and bone marrow, verifies his identity, and gives him access.

But Diomedes notices something wrong. He lifts the man's sleeve and exposes Helios's forearm surgically attached to someone else's upper arm. The impostor already controls the ship.

Chapter 45: Allfather

The impostor paralyzes Lysander, Diomedes, and the Rim guards with poisoned spines. His soldiers seize the bridge, and he contacts Fá, who calls him Allfather. Lysander recognizes Atlas beneath Helios's face and realizes that Atlas is directing the invasion.

Atlas fires on Dido's unshielded flagship, killing her, then disables neighboring ships. Torpedoes launch from Kalyke as Fá's fleet emerges from behind the moon. The Rim ships are caught in the trap.

Lysander begins moving again. Dido's leech has been filtering this new poison from his blood too. He wounds Atlas and drags Diomedes into an escape pod. Atlas's men pull Lysander back, but he launches the pod with Diomedes inside.

Atlas keeps him alive. When Rim guards try to stop Atlas from leaving with Lysander, Rhone and Lysander's other Praetorians kill the guards. Atlas greets the Praetorians by name as they celebrate revenge for the Rim's destruction of the Sword Armada. They have been working for Atlas, and Lysander is now their prisoner.

Chapter 46: The Sun Is Down

The Archimedes reaches Kalyke ten days after the battle and finds the returning Rim fleets destroyed. Aurae locates an evacuation message from Athena's network, but cannot find the hidden refuge it names. A transmitter in Sungrave may restore contact.

Before they leave, a faint signal leads them to Diomedes's escape pod. They rescue him with his oxygen almost exhausted.

Diomedes survives but refuses to speak, prompting Sevro to propose torture. Cassius objects because Diomedes saved his life, and Darrow forbids it, asking Aurae to approach him instead.

Chapter 47: The Bringer of Darkness

Rhone explains his betrayal to Lysander. After a lifetime serving the Lunes and watching comrades die, he resents being asked to embrace their old Rim enemies. He admits poisoning Lysander to keep him unconscious and away from Diomedes. Pytha and Cicero disrupted that plan when they woke him, and Lysander now concludes that the returned cape carried the poison.

Lysander is taken to Atlas, who is having his own features restored. Helios is still alive, but once Sungrave's defense codes have been extracted, Atlas orders him killed.

Atlas explains that Fá is Vagnar Hefga, one of his Gorgons. Fá is Ragnar's biological father, but his role as the Ascomanni's messiah is an invention. Atlas sent him to unite the tribes, while the White agent Xenophon helped separate Sefi's Volk from Darrow. Taking the Volk gave Fá the modern ships and soldiers he needed.

Atlas also claims Atalantia obtained the recording of Darrow destroying the Ganymede docks and sold it to Dido. He and Atalantia drew the Rim into war before destroying its independent leaders and fleets.

The plan was to leave Fá in power for years, then have Atalantia liberate the survivors. Atlas offers Lysander her place. When he refuses, Atlas threatens to replace him with a surgically altered double and have Cicero killed.

Lysander begins imagining the throne, the defeat of the Republic, and enough power to remove Atlas and Atalantia later. He accepts the role of liberator in the catastrophe Atlas has arranged.

Chapter 48: The Tickler

Lyria wakes Darrow because Sevro is torturing Diomedes. Sevro claims Darrow expected him to do it despite the order against it. Aurae drives Sevro away and tends to Diomedes.

Cassius confronts Sevro, and their argument becomes a fight. Trying to intervene, Lyria is accidentally struck by Cassius and knocked unconscious. Darrow separates them, and Cassius carries her for treatment.

Sevro finally tells Darrow that Ulysses is dead. He cannot face Victra after failing to be there. After his captivity under the Abomination, he believes all that remains of him is the Goblin, useful only for hurting people.

Sevro held the Sons together after Fitchner died, and Darrow reminds him that he still needs him as a leader and friend. Sevro is still a father, and he can take a ship home when they reach Io. If he stays, he must help the crew and stop hurting their allies.

Chapter 49: Vae Victis

Lysander accompanies Atlas into the occupied Garter. Its workers are being enslaved, but the farms remain productive. Atlas intends to control the Rim through its food supply.

Fá's closest warriors are Gorgons maintaining the deception. They report that many of the Volk miss home and regret abandoning Darrow.

Fá returns from conquering Sungrave with Volga beside him. In private, he removes the device that amplifies his voice and relaxes with Atlas, speaking softly.

The surviving Raa prisoners include Gaia, Vela, and Diomedes's young sister Thalia. Fá says Gaia killed her grandchildren, but could not kill the youngest. When he offers to kill Thalia, Lysander proposes marrying her when she grows up to legitimize his rule. Atlas considers the idea, leaving her alive. Lysander sees it as something he owes Diomedes.

Chapter 50: Heavy Is the Head

Fá is delighted to learn he can retire in weeks with a new face and the comfortable life Atlas has promised him. He wants Volga to join him, but she still believes in his kingdom and knows nothing about Atlas. Atlas advises making her responsible for atrocities so she will accept what her grandfather has done. Fá agrees.

Lysander will claim he escaped Kalyke, summon his fleet, and liberate the Garter. A false severed head will stand in for Fá, who will escape while his Ascomanni are sacrificed. Atlas says ships carrying diseased captives have already been sent toward the Ascomanni's settlements, where he expects the infection to wipe out the tribes.

Atlas also wants the other major moons devastated. Lysander protests the civilian deaths and wins permission to spare one. He chooses Ganymede, then orders the attacks on Callisto and Europa.

On a separate mission, Atlas intends to retrieve Eidmi, a weapon hidden by House Raa. He says Akari stole it from Silenius centuries ago. Its viruses can supposedly destroy any chosen Color without spreading to the others.

Atlas says the vault will open only for a scarred member of House Raa, which is why he wanted Diomedes alive. Now he plans to use Vela despite her broken back, then bring the weapon to Lysander aboard the Lightbringer. He says Atalantia knows nothing about it.

Chapter 51: Midnight Lands

The Archimedes waits near Io until most of Fá's fleet leaves for Callisto. Sevro helps Darrow prepare without an argument, then joins him to scout toward Sungrave.

Passing ruined cities, Darrow grieves for the enemy civilians killed or carried away. Remembering his own destruction of the Ganymede docks, he recognizes the suffering his victories have caused too.

Chapter 52: Sungrave

Outside Sungrave, Cassius joins Darrow and Sevro with Aurae and Diomedes. He believes Diomedes deserves to see his home and could become an ally. Darrow allows it after Diomedes promises not to escape.

Sungrave is filled with dead soldiers and civilians. Seeing Diomedes's grief, Darrow offers sympathy, promises to help search for his family, and removes his restraints.

The others search for the transmitter. Cassius mentions that Sevro left him a bottle of homemade liquor, an attempt to make peace.

Chapter 53: Eyes of Stone

Diomedes finds two brothers dead, but Gaia, Vela, and Thalia are missing. Aurae contacts Athena and receives instructions to wait.

Darrow proposes joining forces against Fá and admits that he also wants Athena's ships for Mars. Diomedes objects to working with people he considers terrorists and denies being a slaver. Darrow asks whether the Pinks serving Diomedes had any choice. Diomedes says he never thought of Aurae as a slave, but still does not answer whether she had a choice.

Darrow suspects someone has coordinated Fá's victories, but Diomedes still withholds what he knows.

Then Cassius finds soldiers moving captives, including children. Darrow orders him to stay hidden because an attack could expose them before they reach Athena. Cassius refuses to abandon the children.

Darrow goes to help. Sevro stays with Aurae and their contact with Athena, while Diomedes promises to return to the transmitter. Darrow calls Lyria to bring the Archimedes for the others and support the rescue.

Chapter 54: Pella! Pella! Pella!

Cassius attacks, but the Obsidians are Republic veterans who know how to counter him. Darrow joins the fight, and when the last guards retreat aboard the captives' transport, Cassius follows them inside as it launches. The transport crashes during the fighting, but the prisoners survive, some with broken limbs.

Darrow realizes that he came to protect his friend, while Cassius was willing to die for strangers. Before they can get the children to safety, more enemies arrive.

Chapter 55: Demigod

Roughly a hundred Obsidians surround them. Cassius urges Darrow to escape for Mars and Pax while he stays with the children. Darrow refuses. He would be proud if his son grew up like Cassius.

Their commander is Skarde, one of Darrow's former centurions. Darrow reveals his face, and Skarde recognizes him as Tyr Morga, Darrow's old Obsidian name. The soldiers believed he died on Mercury.

Darrow reminds them that they fought to escape slavery, yet are now enslaving others. After Darrow kills three attackers, Skarde's son Sigurd tries to submit to Darrow, but Skarde pulls him back.

Darrow announces that he will challenge Fá to ashvar, a ritual blood contest, to avenge Sefi. Skarde refuses to fight his former commander, but warns that Fá will simply have Darrow killed.

Snipers open fire before they can settle anything.

Chapter 56: Dust Mice

The attackers are Daughters of Ares. Their ambush costs them dearly when the Obsidian veterans fight back. Sevro joins Darrow and Cassius, and together they capture Skarde.

With Lyria flying and Diomedes on the guns, the Archimedes forces the survivors to stand down. Diomedes has kept his promise and helped save the children.

Darrow releases Skarde to carry his challenge to Fá. He wants the Volk to know he is alive and intends to bring them home. Sigurd chooses to join him, claiming others also want Fá dead.

The rescuers' commander, Cheon, refuses Darrow's hand. Her Black Owls have lost half their column, and he has freed Skarde. Athena sent them to bring Darrow to Europa, where her people control the Deep, cities beneath its ocean.

Chapter 57: Lamps in the Storm

On the voyage, Sigurd tells Lyria that Volga now uses Ragnar's family name, Volarus, and has been given a command for the attack on Callisto. Lyria struggles to believe it.

Sevro brings her food and thanks her for flying the ship. She tells him about Ulysses's birth and recovering his body. Volga protected them, and either woman would have traded her life for the baby.

Sevro admits that Fitchner came to hate being Ares. Sevro feels trapped by the same role. Lyria remembers learning that her father informed on other miners, then coming to understand the frightened man trying to protect his family. She suggests becoming Ares may have given Fitchner a way to escape the life Gold society imposed on him. For once, she and Sevro can talk without hostility.

Chapter 58: Europa

On Europa, Cassius stays with the Archimedes to keep their escape ship ready. Lyria tells him she sees his goodness after the rescue. He asks her to consult him before risking herself for Volga.

The others descend to the Deep in a submarine, where gas designed to sedate Golds leaves Darrow, Sevro and Diomedes drowsy. When their seat restraints lock tighter, Lyria draws a pistol to resist the arrest, but she is struck. Cheon then beats the drugged Darrow for betraying the Rim's Sons of Ares. Aurae takes Lyria's pistol and fires warning shots, demanding that Cheon stop.

Athena arrives and ends the abuse, but keeps the prisoners. She says they have been brought for justice.

Chapter 59: Athena

Athena visits Darrow in his cell. She is a Red who survived gathering helium from Jupiter, with the names of people the Society erased tattooed across her body.

She originally sought Sevro, who remains protected as Fitchner's son. Once Darrow contacted her, she could not deny her people's demand for justice. He and Diomedes will face trial.

Athena shows Darrow Pyrphoros, a black spear made for him to lead the Rim's liberation. Now it may execute him. She refuses to help Mars, planning to shelter in the Deep until the Ascomanni destroy Gold rule and leave. Darrow warns that she cannot count on their departure.

She leaves recordings of the Sons he betrayed being tortured and killed. Watching them, Darrow confronts the lives he sacrificed to protect his own war and family. Many die calling his name.

Chapter 60: The Weight of Guilt

Thousands of Daughters gather for Darrow's trial. They include men and women of many Colors, and Athena cannot simply forgive him on their behalf.

Darrow pleads guilty to betraying more than thirteen thousand Sons and killing over a hundred and fifty thousand workers at the Ganymede docks. Fear of losing his own people led him to sacrifice others. The freedom he promised was supposed to belong to everyone.

He asks for neither mercy nor forgiveness. He asks the Daughters to save Europa's surface population, listen to Diomedes, and fight for the wider system. Protecting only themselves would repeat his mistake. Their cause must survive him.

Diomedes speaks next. Gold claimed the lowColors surrendered freedom in exchange for protection and stability, but provided neither. He accepts that the bargain has failed and the Daughters have a claim against their rulers.

Chapter 61: The Three Masters

After the trial, Darrow and Diomedes join Cassius in a cell, where the Daughters have imprisoned him too. Diomedes believes Atlas impersonated Helios and controls Fá. Darrow suspects Lysander is meant to profit from the slaughter by arriving as the Rim's savior. Cassius refuses to believe Lysander would cooperate.

Diomedes says Lysander was surprised by the attack but still saved him. Diomedes assumes Lysander died getting him into the escape pod, and credits that courage to Cassius's years of guardianship. Darrow sets aside his hostility while Cassius grieves for the man he raised.

Chapter 62: The Tyrants’ Debris

In Athena's war room, Sevro appears in the Twilight Helm as Ares. He explains that he has already persuaded the Daughters to give Darrow another chance by reminding them that Fitchner was a flawed man who kept trying after his mistakes. He argues that they must stop destroying one another and includes Cassius among the allies they need.

Athena agrees to shelter Europa's civilians, but her fleet is too far away to stop Fá. Darrow proposes challenging him to ashvar, a ritual duel that could break his hold over the army. Athena lends him Pyrphoros, and he changes its spear form into a slingBlade before swearing to return it and face his sentence after Fá is dead. On Sevro's guarantee, Cassius is freed too.

Diomedes must commit himself to ending the Color hierarchy. He cannot impose that change alone, but Athena wants him to persuade the Rim's rulers. Aurae challenges him to say she deserves fewer choices because she is a Pink. Diomedes asks whether that oath will open refuge and free him to fight Fá and Atlas. Athena agrees.

Chapter 63: Mashed Taters

As civilians descend into the Deep, Lyria asks Darrow to let her reach Volga. She believes her friend can still turn against Fá and bring the Volk back to the Republic.

Darrow warns that Volga now commands part of Fá's army and that he may be unable to rescue Lyria. She accepts the risk. She wants to choose how she helps, and a small Red can pass unnoticed where Darrow cannot.

Sevro supports her. Volga could strengthen their appeal to the Volk, and Lyria knows too little of the main operation to expose it if captured.

Chapter 64: The Noble Lie

Lysander returns to his fleet with wounds Atlas inflicted to support his false escape story. He overcomes pressure to return to the Core by promising his allies glory and lasting influence in the Rim. They will recover the Garter, then pursue Fá.

When Lysander speaks with Pytha, he considers admitting the truth. She cares for him without asking for power in return, and he fears losing that affection. Instead, he repeats the story of a surprise attack and an escape forced on him by his guards. She comforts him, unaware of his agreement with Atlas.

Chapter 65: Into the Maelstrom

With Darrow's permission, Lyria sets out to deliver a message to Volga. Cassius and Sigurd escort her from the Deep toward a shuttle in Heraklion, a city on Europa's surface. From there, Fenrir and Gudmund, two warriors in Fá's army who want to help Darrow, will take her to Volga.

Cassius wants to go farther in disguise, but Sigurd warns that Fá can detect disguised Golds by scent. Before they reach the shuttle, a concealed warrior begins slaughtering refugees in the evacuation station. Sigurd identifies the Ascomanni fighter as a Harbinger and warns that more may already be inside the city.

Chapter 66: The Fall of Heraklion

Heraklion's defenses collapse. Lyria's shuttle is destroyed, forcing Cassius and Sigurd to help her reach a new meeting place. Cassius leaves before the Ascomanni can recognize him and ruin the mission.

Fenrir and Gudmund arrive to take Lyria to Volga as their supposed prisoner. Sigurd must leave separately because Fá has marked him for surrendering to Darrow. He hopes Volga can become a queen who brings the Volk home, restoring a place for the women Fá has pushed aside.

Chapter 67: Volga

Lyria reaches Volga and watches captives thrown into the sea as bait for a leviathan, one of Europa's enormous engineered sea creatures. Volga does nothing to stop it.

In Volga's quarters, Lyria wakes to find her watching the recording Lyria brought. Sevro asks Volga to become queen and return the Volk to Mars, following Ragnar's example by protecting people. He warns that Fá serves Atlas and offers the Barca family's support if she follows Ragnar. If she follows Fá, they will oppose her.

Volga believes Fá has broken free of Gold control. She wants the conquered worlds to become an Obsidian homeland. Lyria understands her anger at the Republic's failures, but refuses to accept freedom built on enslaving others.

Volga threatens to hand Lyria over to Fá, but Lyria refuses to abandon her. Volga shows Lyria Fenrir's and Gudmund's severed heads, saying her guards killed them. Lyria is terrified, but still insists that she and Volga are family.

Chapter 68: The King and His Court

Volga brings Lyria to Fá's feast on Europa's Nixian Isles. Sigurd has been captured too, and his father Skarde must watch him being humiliated.

Volga asks Fá whether he still serves Atlas. He avoids answering and destroys Sevro's recording. When she asks him to spare Lyria, he says her mercy and Republic loyalties make her unfit to lead. She must prove that she belongs with him.

Chapter 69: Hour of Hunger

Fá kills the captured leviathan Cyaxares for the feast. While slaves butcher it, twelve prisoners join Lyria and Sigurd, making one captive from each Color.

Fá gives Volga a powered gauntlet and orders her to tear out their hearts for an Obsidian initiation rite, the Passage of the Stains. She protests that Lyria is her only friend. He insists a leader must bear the guilt of necessary killings, invoking Ragnar to make her accept the test. She must choose between her past with the Republic and the future he offers.

Chapter 70: Passage of the Stains

Volga kills thirteen prisoners, including Sigurd, before reaching Lyria. Fá refuses her pleas to spare her friend and orders her to destroy her weakness.

Lyria reminds Volga that Volga is Ephraim's daughter and does not have to become like Fá. Volga raises the gauntlet, then lowers it. She cannot kill her.

Nearby, something moves inside the dead leviathan. An armored man bursts from its stomach, followed by two companions. He cuts through the shamans and opens his helmet. Darrow has reached the feast.

Chapter 71: Ashvar

Darrow, Sevro and Cassius have spent three days inside Cyaxares. With help from Europa's rulers, Diomedes arranged for the leviathan to swallow them in acid-resistant pods.

Sevro has shot Fá with an explosive dart and threatens to detonate it if Fá's guards intervene. Darrow demands ashvar, but Fá denies that a non-Obsidian can invoke it.

Skarde confirms that Sefi accepted Darrow into the Volk. The laws that forced Skarde to watch his son's execution must bind the king too. Fá cannot refuse and keep his throne.

With other jarls supporting the challenge, Fá accepts. Sevro deactivates the dart. As the challenged fighter, Fá chooses full armor and a shield dome.

Chapter 72: Full-Metal Panoply

Fá's massive armor protects him without costing much speed in Europa's low gravity. Darrow's Willow Way attacks cannot get through it. Cassius has warned Darrow that flying upward would only let Fá pin him against the dome, leaving him little room to escape.

Fá drives a spike from his armor through Darrow's thigh protection. The wound begins burning. Fá tells him it is poisoned and that his death is already certain.

Chapter 73: The Breath of Stone

Analysis matched poison in the victims Darrow examined at Sungrave to the poison on the spines removed from Diomedes. Athena supplied Darrow with a blood leech and antitoxins that keep him fighting, but Fá still knows how to counter the Willow Way.

At Cassius's signal, Darrow slows his breathing and circles. Wind rising through cracked stone recalls the mines and the Path's teachings. He stops meeting Fá's strength directly and begins flowing around it, changing his balance and deflecting attacks.

Cassius's training has given Darrow the foundation to find his own style. Darrow lets Fá tire, then starts stripping away Fá's armor.

The dome drops and Gorgons enter to attack Darrow, but he demands that Fá confess his service to Atlas. The Volk join the demand, and Skarde turns against Fá's protectors. Sevro and Cassius help stop the interference while Volga escapes with Lyria. Fá abandons the fight and flees toward the warship Pandora.

Chapter 74: The Hunt

Diomedes and the Black Owls attack, cutting off Fá's route to Pandora. Fá flees through the island feasts instead, with Darrow in pursuit. Cassius and Sevro protect Darrow's back.

Many warriors recognize the ritual markings of ashvar and refuse to interfere. A growing crowd watches its supposedly invincible king run from Darrow, who continues demanding a confession.

Chapter 75: Prove It

Volga finds escape pods and wants to flee, fearing the jarls will kill her as a laboratory-born heir now that Fá cannot protect her. Lyria refuses. Sparing Lyria does not erase the thirteen people Volga killed. If Volga wants to belong to her people, she must face those she has harmed and accept responsibility.

Lyria will stand beside her, but will not help her escape the consequences. Volga agrees to return, carrying Lyria with her.

Chapter 76: By the Laws of the Ice

Cornered before the gathered warriors, Fá bargains for his life. Darrow promises not to kill him himself if he confesses.

Fá admits that Atlas planted him among the Ascomanni to unite them against the Republic and Rim. He describes the earlier plan: his reign would prepare the way for Atalantia to arrive as the Rim's savior. He still refuses to reveal Atlas's location.

Darrow declares that a servant of Atlas was never the Volk's rightful king. Skarde agrees, so killing Fá will not automatically pass on his crown. Darrow invokes the law holding Fá's family responsible for his shame and gives Volga the gauntlet to judge her grandfather.

Fá says he forced her to kill because he hoped becoming like him would make her love him. Volga tears out his heart.

Sevro announces an election under the Howlers' protection. Athena and Diomedes fear that the captives and stolen wealth may never be returned, but Darrow refuses to appoint a ruler. He needs the Volk's willing cooperation. Together, the allies turn to freeing Pandora's enslaved crew.

Part IV: Brothers

Chapter 77: Old Stoneside

After recapturing Pandora with its crew's help, Darrow and Cassius visit Lorn's abandoned island estate on Europa. Cassius helps Darrow see the man Darrow's pupil Alexandar became instead of only his death. Darrow gives him the same comfort about Lysander, whom they still believe died saving Diomedes.

Lyria brings Volga to the island. Volga tells them Sevro has made Lyria a Howler, then says she fears becoming Darrow's instrument if she becomes queen. Darrow admits using the Obsidians for war without giving them the future he promised. He offers their next ruler amnesty and a chance to defend Mars, where their families remain, but will not force the choice.

Lyria brings news that Volga has won the election. Volga accepts Darrow's friendship, then tells him to stay away from her coronation if he means to respect her independence.

Chapter 78: The Monster in the Storm

Sevro reports that Volga has destroyed Fá's throne, cast off her gold and jewels, and called the Volk home to defend Mars. Captives are being freed as Darrow, Cassius and Diomedes head for Io to protect the Garter from the remaining Ascomanni.

Cassius thanks Darrow for giving him a place among friends. Darrow tells him they will be brothers for the rest of their lives. He also names his new fighting style the Breath of Stone, after the wind in the mines, and offers to take Cassius there.

Then a Core fleet passes close to the Archimedes. Darrow recognizes his former flagship, now the Lightbringer, approaching Io under Lysander's colors.

Chapter 79: Teeth of Civilization

Lysander attacks the Ascomanni occupying the Garter and presents himself as its liberator. Cicero frees captives and tends the wounded without knowing Lysander is part of Atlas's plan.

Lysander's guards release Gaia and the other Moon Lords. With his permission, the Moon Lords execute the wounded Ascomanni and Volk prisoners before thanking him as their savior.

He promises to return the Garter to their control and proposes a joint attack on Europa. Neither he nor Gaia knows Fá is already dead.

Chapter 80: Stirring Stuff

Lysander's broadcasts confirm he is alive. Darrow sees Atlas's plan unfolding, while Cassius still questions whether Lysander willingly joined it.

Lysander's fleet could destroy the Volk before Athena's ships can join them. Darrow realizes Atlas's strict limits on communication may have kept Lysander from learning what happened on Europa, giving them time to act. They decide to reach Gaia and expose the truth, hoping Lysander's fear for his reputation can restrain him.

Chapter 81: Parting of the Shadow

Core and Rim knights gather to confess their fears before battle. Lysander conceals his fear of Atlas behind a speech about Gold disunity.

Diomedes interrupts to thank Lysander publicly for saving him, then leads him away for a private meeting. There, he reveals that he knows about Atlas's scheme. He distinguishes Lysander's original innocence from his later cooperation.

Inside a hidden shrine, Darrow is waiting.

Chapter 82: Civil Discourse

Diomedes surprises both men by bringing them together. He presents Fá's head and proposes a three-way alliance against Atalantia. If Darrow and Lysander exhaust each other, she will destroy the survivor. He expects to command the Rim's remaining forces and will support neither man without the other.

Darrow must seek the Moon Lords' pardon with Fá's head. Lysander must bring Atlas's. Darrow will consider peace, but not continuing slavery, unchanged Gold rule or a Lune as Sovereign. Asked how he can forgive Alexandar's murder, he remembers his pupil choosing to save enemy civilians.

Diomedes gives them until that night's assembly to answer and lets Lysander leave safely.

Back aboard the Archimedes, Darrow finds a recording from Cassius, who has left the ship. Before listening, he suspects Cassius has gone to the Lightbringer. Diomedes discovers a listening device on Darrow that could have let Cassius overhear the meeting. They are surrounded by Gaia's guards when she appears and demands an explanation.

Chapter 83: A Way Out

Pytha has helped Cassius enter the Lightbringer after learning about Atlas. Cassius waits in Lysander's quarters, offering a way to accept Diomedes's alliance. Lysander shows him Fitchner's old Ares helmet, recovered from Sevro's trapped rooms. It is the helmet Sevro wore before receiving the Twilight Helm.

Lysander admits feeling replaced when Cassius rescued Darrow. Cassius apologizes for trying to replace his dead brother Julian with Lysander, then withdrawing from him. Lysander begins shaking and remembers Octavia putting him in the Pandemonium Chair, a device that alters memories, when he trembled as a child. She claimed it would calm him, but afterward his memories of his parents were gone.

Now Atlas uses Lysander's own guards to control him and threatens everyone Lysander cares about. Cassius offers to kill Atlas when he arrives. With Pytha's support, Lysander agrees, insisting Rhone must die too. He has not yet accepted the alliance.

Chapter 84: Hangar 17B

Lysander and Cassius ambush Atlas when he returns to the Lightbringer carrying a reinforced pack. Rhone intervenes, leaving Lysander to fight him while Cassius faces Atlas.

Rhone nearly kills Lysander before Lysander finally cuts him down. Cassius loses his right hand but defeats Atlas with his left, wrapping his razor around Atlas's neck. Atlas starts telling him about Eidmi, the biological weapon in the pack supposedly able to destroy a chosen Color. Lysander shoots Atlas in the head to silence him.

Lysander tells Cassius to leave the weapon and escape. He admits using Cassius to remove Atlas and intending to blame Cassius for the killing. Eidmi could give Lysander the power to become Sovereign.

Cassius refuses to leave Eidmi in Lysander's hands and urges him to destroy it and join the alliance against Atalantia. When Lysander treats that refusal as forcing him to kill, Cassius makes clear that this is Lysander's choice.

Cassius declares himself Darrow's brother and the Republic's Morning Knight, then advances. Lysander repeatedly shoots him. Cassius reaches him but dies with his blade almost at Lysander's heart. Lysander cannot tell whether Cassius could not finish the attack or chose not to.

Lysander burns the evidence and wounds himself with Cassius's razor to support a story of surviving assassins sent by Diomedes. He orders Kyber to kill Atlas's remaining infiltrators and arrest Pytha alive. His wounds will stay visible for his allies to see.

Chapter 85: Dusk and Dawn

Gaia reveals that Atlas visited her in captivity and promised Fá would destroy the Daughters to protect the hierarchy. She values that order more than Rim independence and commands Diomedes to kill Darrow.

Instead, Diomedes wraps Pyrphoros's blade around his own neck and gives Gaia its handle. The Daughters saved people the Golds failed to protect. He has sworn to defend them and will work to dismantle the hierarchy and abolish the Rim's secret police.

Gaia cannot kill her grandson. She offers not to oppose him, but he needs her public authority to persuade the other Moon Lords. Still disagreeing, she promises to stand beside him.

Chapter 86: Nivalnight

After hearing about Atlas's scheme, the Moon Lords name Diomedes Hegemon, giving him wartime command. Cassius and Lysander are still absent.

Darrow enters their assembly, eats the bread that makes him a protected guest and presents Fá's head. He admits destroying the Ganymede docks was a crime against allies and asks for pardon so their peoples can work together. He does not expect personal forgiveness.

Diomedes proposes restoring the alliance with the Rising. Gaia supports him against demands for vengeance, arguing they cannot defeat Atalantia alone. Before they settle the matter, Lysander calls from the Lightbringer.

Chapter 87: Casus Belli

Lysander displays his wounds and Cassius's mutilated body, accusing the Rim of sending assassins after its rescuer. Darrow learns Cassius is dead while Lysander turns the killing into a public justification for war.

Lysander dismisses Diomedes's and Gaia's testimony about Atlas and demands Darrow's surrender. The Moon Lords refuse because Darrow is their protected guest. Lysander tells them to let Darrow feed them.

His ships begin destroying the Garter's fields, orchards and the atmosphere bubbles that keep its farms habitable. The council chamber starts collapsing. Darrow and Diomedes hold a falling pillar while survivors escape. Gaia helps the injured Darrow reach safety before the building collapses.

Once inside the bunker, they turn back to help the civilians still above.

Chapter 88: The Sack of Demeter

As the Garter burns, Lysander steals its trees, seeds and agricultural knowledge, enslaving its growers. He plans to enrich the Core while starving the Rim into submission.

Cicero is horrified by civilians dying beside their trees. He still believes the assassination story, but objects to punishing the people who live here. Lysander promises that future peace will justify the destruction.

Atlas deduced where Darrow was hiding from Lysander's account of meeting Darrow. Kyber used that information to seize the Archimedes. Now Lysander frees Pytha and gives her the ship with Cassius's body and Fitchner's original helmet. He tells her Cassius killed Atlas, concealing his own fatal shot. Pytha threatens to kill Lysander if they meet again.

With another fleet joining the Volk, Lysander decides an attack is too risky. He and his allies withdraw toward the Core with their spoils, without confirming that Darrow or Diomedes is dead.

Alone, Lysander opens Atlas's pack. Fourteen golden cubes hold Eidmi. He considers the ones marked Red and Gold, wondering which to use first.

Chapter 89: The Only Path

Three weeks later, Darrow emerges from the buried bunker. Lysander's bombardment lasted two days. The Daughters and Volga's ships are helping recover survivors from the ruins. While trapped, Darrow finished his account of his life for Pax, including Cassius's story.

The parties sign the Covenant of the Rim, giving the Daughters amnesty and promising due process to every Color. The Volk must surrender their spoils and swear never again to venture beyond the asteroid belt. Freed Rim Obsidians may choose to remain with them, and the Dominion gives up its right to prosecute Volk braves. The Republic and Rim enter a ten-year military alliance against the Society. Ending the Color hierarchy remains Diomedes's promise, not something the treaty has secured.

Athena gives Darrow a new sentence: preserve her ships and bring food from Mars to keep the Rim alive. She stays to help her people, sending Cheon with the fleet. Diomedes will join the war when the remaining Rim armada arrives. Aurae stays as his emissary to the Daughters, and Darrow recognizes that Aurae and Diomedes love each other.

Darrow leaves with the reinforcements he sought, though many crews must now work beside the Obsidians who enslaved them. He believes their divided force would have lost if Lysander had attacked, and hopes to train them during the voyage.

Pytha catches up aboard the Archimedes with Cassius's body. She has told the others he killed Atlas. Sevro places Fitchner's recovered helmet in the coffin. He and Darrow then sit in Cassius's room, watching the Institute recordings their friend kept around him.

Darrow has sent a message to Mars without knowing whether it arrived. Holding Pax's key, he silently promises his wife and son that he is coming home with an army and an armada.
