Permanent enhancement · Introduced in Book 3
Portal-analysis neural enhancer
Valtay Neural Enhancer 544, Variant 32.c is a pill that permanently adds portal analysis to Carl’s interface. A sponsor gives it to him so he can learn where portals lead and what he needs to use them.[1]

Information and restrictions
The upgrade identifies subspace portals, shows whether travel works in one or both directions and lists access requirements and available destinations. When access permits, it also displays a still image of the other side. It analyzes teleportation portals, not ordinary doorways.
Industrial portals may require a key or a compatible vehicle. The analyzer tells Carl what he needs, but he must still hold or equip the required item outside inventory. The enhancer’s communication features are disabled in the dungeon.[2]

History
Book 3
The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook
Carl takes the pill and first tests the upgrade on his room portal. He then uses it to inspect industrial portals and their access rules. A red train coming through Station Repair demonstrates that the portals can carry entire trains.[2]

Book 3
The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook
Looking through the trailer exit, Carl sees Hekla and an unexpected group inside the personal space. Later, he uses the analyzer to distinguish line destinations and a usable trainyard exit from an unsafe position above the Abyss.[3]

Book 8
A Parade of Horribles
In Dachshund compatibility mode, the analyzer identifies the portal Chris and Britney use as a one-way, open-access route to a stasis chamber. It cannot show Carl an image of the destination.[4]
