Christopher Ruocchio’s Sun Eater series contains seven main novels, beginning with Empire of Silence and ending with Shadows Upon Time. Hadrian Marlowe’s story is complete, so you can read the entire main series without waiting for another installment.
For a first-time reader, start with Empire of Silence and follow the novels in publication order. Three novellas and four Tales of the Sun Eater collections add side stories, but you do not need them to follow the central plot.
The longer reading order below shows where those extras fit and also covers the forthcoming Songs of the Sun Eater collection.
The Sun Eater books in publication order
Here is the order for the seven main novels, using their original US publication years:
- Empire of Silence (2018)
- Howling Dark (2019)
- Demon in White (2020)
- Kingdoms of Death (2022)
- Ashes of Man (2022)
- Disquiet Gods (2024)
- Shadows Upon Time (2025)
These books form one continuing story. Keep that sequence even if you switch between hardcover, paperback, ebook, or audio. A later edition’s release date does not change its place in the series.
Empire of Silence introduces Hadrian as a young nobleman trying to escape the future his father has chosen for him. His account grows into a much larger story about humanity’s war with the alien Cielcin, told through the life of a man looking back on his own complicated legacy.
The complete Sun Eater reading order with optional stories
If you want the side stories along the way, use this expanded route. Ruocchio’s official reading guidance treats the novellas and collections as optional. You can also save them until after the main series if you would rather stay with Hadrian.
- Empire of Silence
- The Lesser Devil (optional novella)
- Howling Dark
- Queen Amid Ashes (optional novella)
- Tales of the Sun Eater, Volume 1 (optional collection)
- Demon in White
- Tales of the Sun Eater, Volume 2 (optional collection)
- Kingdoms of Death
- Ashes of Man
- Tales of the Sun Eater, Volume 3 (optional collection)
- The Dregs of Empire (optional novella)
- Tales of the Sun Eater, Volume 4 (optional collection)
- Disquiet Gods
- Shadows Upon Time
- Songs of the Sun Eater (optional collection, releasing November 24, 2026)
The important boundary for The Dregs of Empire and the later Tales volumes is finishing Ashes of Man first. The route above puts those extras together before Disquiet Gods; it does not turn them into three additional numbered novels.
Where do the Sun Eater novellas fit?
The Lesser Devil belongs after Empire of Silence. It follows Hadrian’s brother, Crispin Marlowe, and gives House Marlowe and life on Delos more room than they receive in Hadrian’s account. Read the first novel before moving to this different viewpoint.
Queen Amid Ashes fits after Howling Dark and before Demon in White. This one returns to Hadrian for a military adventure on Thagura. It is a useful stop if you want another episode with him before continuing to Book 3.
The Dregs of Empire comes after Ashes of Man and before Disquiet Gods. Lorian Aristedes takes the lead in a story set on the prison world of Belusha. Its setup depends on later events in the series, so do not read it early just because it is shorter.
When should you read Tales of the Sun Eater?
The four Tales of the Sun Eater volumes collect shorter fiction from different corners of the setting. They are separate from the three novellas and should not be confused with the main novels’ numbering.
Read Volume 1 after Howling Dark, Volume 2 after Demon in White, and Volumes 3 and 4 after Ashes of Man. The expanded list places the novellas alongside them so you have one route to follow.
Because these collections move between characters and periods, a strictly chronological arrangement is less helpful on a first read. Let the novels introduce their people and mysteries before exploring the surrounding stories. Returning to the collections after all seven novels is also a straightforward option.
Where does Songs of the Sun Eater fit?
Songs of the Sun Eater is a forthcoming collection, scheduled for November 24, 2026. It gathers previously published short fiction and includes the new novelette The End of History.
The publisher’s description places that new story after Shadows Upon Time. For a first read, save the collection until you have finished Book 7.
This is additional fiction in the same universe, not an eighth main novel. If you already own the Tales collections, check the contents before buying it for older stories you may already have.
Is the Sun Eater series finished?
Yes. Shadows Upon Time, published on November 18, 2025, is the seventh and final main novel. Its October 20, 2026 paperback is a new edition of that same concluding book.
