History
Book 1
Dungeon Crawler Carl
The official justification for seizure
The opening announcement declares Earth subject to reclamation because an appeal period has expired. Mordecai explains that species were seeded on the planet and its early governments were later contacted. According to him, they failed to make a required filing. The Syndicate treats that failure as grounds to seize Earth, regardless of whether its present-day inhabitants know anything about the agreement.[1]

Book 5
The Butcher’s Masquerade
Court power changes the crawl’s ownership
A Syndicate court separates Borant Corporation from its government, allowing Valtay to take a majority stake under an existing rule. The crawl continues under the new ownership. Later, the council suspends crawl-related legal cases, interrupting the court dispute over the AI before it can be resolved.[2]

Book 7
This Inevitable Ruin
Earth’s representation and conflicting orders
Rishi offers Carl ships and citizenship guarantees in exchange for permission to terraform and settle other planets in Earth’s solar system. He explains how outsiders could recognize Carl as Earth’s negotiator, but Carl publicly rejects the offer. Later, officials attempt to eject Carl from the crawl amid conflicting orders from their ship and headquarters. The AI intervenes, claiming sole authority over crawler exits.
Adjutants report a possible hidden financial connection between the Dream and the Reavers, which remains under investigation. Meanwhile, guests are offered refuge on Floor Sixteen. Reaching it requires them to cross the active maze on Floor Seventeen first.[3]

Book 8
A Parade of Horribles
A covert plan inside the crawl
Syndicate security kills a fan named Linus and forces his brother Minus to take his place inside the dungeon. Captain Fresh initially orders Minus to kill a crawler, preferably Elle. He hopes the death will destabilize the group and trigger an early Ascendency before the AI can spread further. Destroying the wider system is part of his stated fallback plan.
Linus’s friends notice that the visitor does not behave like the man they know. Their messages on the Princess Posse board help expose Minus. When Carl confronts him, Minus says his targets are Imani and Louis; the reason for the change from Fresh’s original preference is not explained. Neither target is harmed. Carl sends Minus out of the dungeon alive, warning him about the danger of returning to his now-exposed ship.[4]
