Introduction
Mordecai is the tutorial guildmaster who teaches Carl and Donut how to survive the World Dungeon. Carl first meets him as a level-50 Rat Hooligan, an NPC who is not allowed to fight.
A former crawler himself, Mordecai knows both the dungeon’s rules and the ways its organizers exploit the people trapped inside. He becomes one of Carl and Donut’s most important advisers, though restrictions on his job limit what he can tell them and how he can help.[1]
Appearance and Personality
Mordecai was born a skyfowl and chose the Changeling race on the third floor of his own crawl. His rat-like body is part of his tutorial assignment. His assigned form, along with the copied home he occupies, changes as he moves through the dungeon.
On the second floor, Mordecai becomes a Bugaboo. He is still listed as a level-50 noncombatant and retains the memories and experience of his previous forms.[2]
Mordecai’s Incubus body on the third floor is unusually vulnerable to alcohol. After becoming Donut’s manager, he drinks enough to leave himself unable to help when the party returns in an emergency. He later apologizes for letting them down.
Mordecai resents being made a manager because it takes away much of his independence. He loses information access, has to move between safe rooms with Donut and fears that reunions he has spent decades planning will no longer be possible. The extra pay does little to comfort him.[3]
On the fourth floor, Mordecai takes the form of a Grulke Infantry member, though he is still forbidden from fighting. He is blunt with the party and furious when their experiments put them in danger. He continues helping them even when he strongly disagrees with their decisions.[4]
On the fifth floor, Mordecai looks like a small, pale skyfowl in dark robes, carrying a staff. He can fly short distances. The resemblance to his original species does not restore the abilities or freedom he had before becoming a manager.
Mordecai tells Carl to treat local workers with respect and shares stored films with refugee children in their room. His efforts to protect people can also cross a line. He secretly gives Louis and Firas a potion that keeps them sober for the rest of the floor, drawing Carl’s objection when its lasting effect comes to light.[5]
His tiny PocketKuma body makes reaching and handling objects awkward. The party shares a much-needed laugh at his appearance, but Mordecai soon gets back to work managing their settlement and insisting that Carl tell him what he is planning.[6]
Mordecai briefly becomes a slime on the skipped seventh floor, then a Hills Cyclops on the eighth. In that body, neither he nor objects attached to him appear in a mirror. He also quietly uses money intended for supplies to shelter six vulnerable attendants.
When Katia needs help, Mordecai admits that her death would remove a rival whose crown threatens Donut. He nevertheless agrees that caring for her is the right thing to do.[7]
Mordecai is human on the ninth floor, still listed at level 50. With better alchemy equipment, he can examine ingredients and recipes in greater detail. He recognizes how strong Carl and Donut have become but keeps pushing them to practice and prepare.[8]
On the tenth floor, Mordecai becomes a shadow mimic that first looks like a Moon Reaper. Encountering unfamiliar races can force him to transform and leave gaps in his memory. He tells the party not to trust the mimic’s cruel remarks as predictions of the future.
On the eleventh floor, Mordecai becomes an Animistic Spirit capable of inhabiting objects. Moving around and speaking aloud are difficult, leaving him dependent on unfamiliar ways of communicating with the party.[9]

Attributes and Abilities
Mordecai survived to the eleventh floor of his own crawl and negotiated a deal to leave. He knows about classes, character growth, sponsors and the business behind the show. As Carl and Donut’s registered guide, he can be reached through tutorial doors until they enter the fourth floor.
Mordecai cannot explain how to beat a boss the crawlers have not encountered, but he can discuss a fight they have already seen. He also warns them against taking early exit deals, urging them to survive long enough to negotiate from a stronger position.[10]
As a manager, Mordecai can leave the safe room with the party but cannot fight. He is pulled between safe rooms with Donut and loses the codex and television access he had as a guildmaster. Contacts, stolen newsletters and his own observations help fill the gaps. He receives a warning when Donut’s health drops below a threshold, rather than being able to monitor every injury.
Before entering the dungeon, Mordecai was a mycologist. During his crawl, he developed fire magic and alchemy. His knowledge of fungi and ingredients helps him prepare treatments, including a modified pet-healing remedy. He still needs the right supplies and equipment. He also advises Katia on her changing body, explaining that durability alone will not give her strength or fighting skill.[11]
Mordecai plans routines for resting, taking buffs, training, crafting and scouting. Donut uses coupons to upgrade his alchemy table, allowing him to make stronger remedies, permanent buffs, projectile potions and emergency brew.
Even Mordecai’s best remedies have limits. He warns Carl that potions cannot make reckless use of the ring or explosives safe. Knowing the plan in advance gives him time to prepare the supplies they will actually need.[12]
Mordecai explains that some cooldowns and broadcasts follow the roughly thirty-hour Syndicate Standard day, rather than local dungeon time. He can identify rare mushrooms, but does not always know a use for them. Missing ingredients also prevent him from making flight or Feather Fall potions when the party needs them.
Mordecai warns that a creature escaping the Nothing could be very different from a smaller summon that disappears after a time limit. His experience helps him recognize the danger, though he cannot predict every result of combining unfamiliar powers.[13]
After searching for many cycles, Mordecai obtains a Charm Animal recipe. Each version must be adapted to the target species, and making one for raptors requires Mongo’s blood. He offers to sedate and heal Mongo, but Donut initially refuses. He can only make the potions after she agrees to the later blood collections.
Mordecai brews a treatment for the Creepers, but it has to cover the whole creature to work. Louis’s extermination ability and Carl’s vehicle plan provide a way to deliver it during the fight.[14]
During his own crawl, Mordecai used level-20 Final Blow to strike Dodola with lightning inside a containment circle. He cannot use that attack in his present job as a noncombatant manager.
Mordecai warns the party about the danger of carrying fully charged souls and upgrades his alchemy facilities to make protective supplies for the guild. He also identifies the four dungeon drugs affecting Katia and explains that their effects on her memory require supervised treatment. The group is still preparing that treatment when some members want to continue their mission.[15]
Mordecai analyzes the rare potion that restores Mongo’s wing and works out how to reproduce it. Obtaining the scarce ingredients remains the obstacle.
When someone tries to extract Carl from the dungeon, Mordecai spots the surveillance and disguises a countermeasure as a mistake in his potion. He later makes the bolt used to kill Huanxin, adding his mother’s remains to its preparation.[16]
Tipid says Mordecai’s shadow-mimic transformations and copied skills should not be possible under the normal rules. One transformation immediately precedes Rend’s death. Mordecai cannot explain exactly what happened, and it is unclear how much control he had over it.
Mordecai recognizes Chalchiuhtlicue as a goddess he killed during his own crawl, but cannot explain her involvement in the current events. Becoming an Animistic Spirit later gives him another unfamiliar body to learn to use.[17]

History
Book 1
Dungeon Crawler Carl
Meeting the first crawlers and the price of freedom
Carl initially thinks Mordecai is a monster guarding the tutorial entrance. Donut slips through the partly open door, prompting Mordecai to let Carl in as well. Inside, he teaches them to inspect their rewards, use the interface and begin training.
Mordecai tells Carl and Donut that he was born a skyfowl, became a Changeling and took a deal on the eleventh floor. This is his final contracted tour before he earns freedom, citizenship and a stipend, although he has no home left to return to. He registers as their guide and privately warns them not to settle for poor exit offers.[18]
Odette and the next-floor preparation
Mordecai helps the pair review boss fights they have observed, while the rules prevent him from revealing solutions to bosses they have not seen. Odette tells Carl that at least one of Mordecai’s crawlers must reach the fourth floor for this season to count toward his release.
On the second floor, Mordecai becomes a Bugaboo. He remains angry with Odette but acknowledges that appearing on her show could help Carl and Donut. While discussing classes, he mentions his own focus on fire magic and his brother’s decision to become a Storm Commander on Odette’s advice. He does not yet explain what happened to his brother.[19]

Book 2
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario
An involuntary promotion
Carl and Donut arrange for her Former Child Actor class to appoint Mordecai as manager. He believes they made a mistake and is furious about losing his independence and access to information. His Incubus body then reacts badly to alcohol, leaving him incapacitated when the party returns early from its first circus emergency.
Mordecai apologizes and resumes helping the group. He warns them that the people producing the quest can intervene in ways that make the situation more dangerous than its apparent rules suggest. Being their manager keeps him close enough to help, but upsets the future he had planned for himself.[20]
Replacing lost resources and reaching the contract threshold
During the crisis involving Donut and Mongo, Mordecai uses a sedative distraction to steal information and herbs, seeks help from Eklund and modifies a healing remedy. He begins gathering alchemy supplies for the next floor, trading away one of his few remaining luxuries to obtain them.
Mordecai helps Katia understand how to use her new body, including the difference between surviving a hit and fighting effectively. When Donut reaches the fourth floor, she fulfills the condition for his final contracted season. He stays with the party as her manager.[21]

Book 3
The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook
The shared workshop and Chaco
In his Grulke Infantry form, Mordecai pushes the party to level up, share facilities and establish a preparation routine. He realizes Donut may retain progress earned while using a temporary specialty and advises her to keep that possible loophole quiet.
An upgraded alchemy table helps Mordecai prepare better emergency supplies. His work is interrupted when he attacks Chaco. The system gives him a seven-day timeout, removing both him and his private room while the party continues through much of the floor without him.[22]
Returning to the consequences
Mordecai returns to find new player-killer skulls, the Ring of Divine Suffering and a shared room in chaos. He is angry about the risks the group has taken and warns against reckless use of the ring. He nevertheless resumes making supplies and helping them survive.[23]

Book 4
The Gate of the Feral Gods
Castles, supplies and a refuge
Mordecai’s smaller skyfowl-like body gives him limited flight on the fifth floor. He takes the unexpectedly long deadline as a warning that the floor will be difficult and urges the party to prepare before trying to conquer its castles. Workshop upgrades and missing ingredients limit what he can make for them.
Mordecai examines unfamiliar mushrooms, tells Carl to respect Juice Box and the other local workers, and entertains children in the personal space with films he has saved. He also gives Louis and Firas an alcohol-resistance potion without revealing that it will keep them sober for the entire floor.[24]
Containment and imperfect knowledge
Carl catches Mordecai in a smoke experiment and receives a reprimand for handling it carelessly. As the group considers stronger potions and divine powers, Mordecai warns that stories about their past uses may not tell them what will happen under different conditions.
Mordecai argues that Samantha’s knowledge makes her worth keeping around, while recommending limits on where she can move inside the safe room. He also explains the unequal risks faced by participants in Faction Wars. As the floor ends, he points out that the administrators have moved attractions forward in response to the disruption rather than admitted defeat.[25]

Book 5
The Butcher’s Masquerade
The manager at Point Mongo
Mordecai recommends Guerrilla as Carl’s specialization, but Carl chooses Agent Provocateur for its long-term Intelligence gains and workshop benefits. Now in a tiny PocketKuma body, Mordecai remains outspoken. After the Zockau attack, he oversees the recovery and demands that Carl warn him about dangerous plans before carrying them out.
At Point Mongo, Mordecai organizes defenses and changes local rules while allies build a guildhall and improve the settlement. If he is attacked, he still needs an escort to safety: managing the town does not lift his ban on combat.[26]
The hidden past and new recipes
Mordecai helps Carl interpret Lucia’s unusual speech, though he cannot identify every influence behind it. When Vrah attacks Edict in the personal space and is expelled, he collects the gold she drops.
Mordecai tells Carl that he once served as Odette’s manager and testified against her when she was tried for an act committed during her crawl. He does not yet explain the whole story. Meanwhile, he works on the species-specific Charm Animal potion and the treatment for Creepers. Seeing Chaco at the prize counter rekindles his anger, though he still advises the party on its rewards.[27]

Book 6
The Eye of the Bedlam Bride
The sacrifice of Uzzi
The prologue returns to the tenth floor of Mordecai’s own crawl. To open the stairs, a charged puzzle must touch a storm god, and their sponsor Huanxin keeps raising her price for help. Mordecai offers to sacrifice himself using Final Blow. Odette persuades him to abandon that plan by claiming everyone can be saved, then pressures Chaco to use Uzzi as the god’s vessel instead.
Chaco uses the Dart of Ophiotaurus on Uzzi and traps him with the puzzle inside a containment spell. Dodola is drawn into Uzzi’s body, killing him. Before the god’s immunity takes effect, Mordecai’s Final Blow strikes repeatedly into the circle. Huanxin has already withdrawn and survives outside the dungeon. Chaco receives credit for the god’s death, the stairs open, and Mordecai attacks him before escaping. Odette earns her release, while Mordecai vows revenge.[28]
The cyclops manager and vulnerable dependents
On the eighth floor of the current crawl, Mordecai becomes a cyclops and learns that Carl and Donut have bought a faction. He is alarmed that they kept such a commitment from him. He warns them about stored souls, Huanxin and Samantha’s unexplained growth, while secretly spending supply money to shelter six vulnerable attendants.
Katia returns in withdrawal, with several dungeon drugs affecting her stats and memory. Mordecai explains the treatments she needs. He admits that her death would remove Donut’s crown rival, but agrees that helping her is right. Carl refuses to abandon her, and the group cares for her while continuing the assassination mission.[29]
Odette’s account of his later suffering
Odette tells Carl that a restructuring later separated Mordecai from his NPC family. During one of her visits, he attempted suicide and survived through resurrection. She says she wanted him freed so he could make his own choices about his life. Carl hears this account from Odette herself.
Odette credits Chaco with killing Dodola, while the prologue shows Mordecai’s Final Blow striking the god inside the containment spell. Both accounts describe Uzzi’s sacrifice, though they differ over the attack. In the present, Mordecai continues working in a guildhall crowded with displaced performers and changeling children.[30]

Book 7
This Inevitable Ruin
Human form and the concealed countermeasure
Mordecai is human on the ninth floor and has better alchemy equipment. He works out the recipe for the rare potion that restores Mongo’s wing, although its ingredients remain difficult to obtain. He also reminds Carl and Donut that their growing power is no substitute for practice.
Mordecai notices the ambush and surveillance surrounding the attempt to wake Carl and extract him from the dungeon. He conceals his countermeasure as a faulty potion, helping foil the plan without directly attacking anyone.[31]
A bolt made with his mother’s remains
Donut uses Laundry Day to force Huanxin out of the goddess she is controlling. Anti-teleport wards prevent Huanxin from escaping. Donut then shoots her at close range with a crossbow bolt Mordecai prepared using his mother’s remains, killing her.
Mordecai thanks Donut before they descend. Eileithyia survives Huanxin’s death, but the victory cannot bring Uzzi or Mordecai’s lost family back.[32]

Book 8
A Parade of Horribles
The shadow mimic’s dangerous changes
Mordecai first appears as a Moon Reaper on the tenth floor. The group later learns that he is a shadow mimic, forced into transformations when he encounters unfamiliar races and sometimes left unable to remember what happened. He dismisses the mimic’s cruel statements as unreliable, while his allies try to avoid triggering further changes.
One episode begins when Mordecai sees Rend and is followed by the pet’s death. Tipid says the combination of Changeling and mimic abilities is abnormal. Mordecai continues advising the party on domination, souls and healing, but cannot fully explain what is happening to him. He also recognizes Chalchiuhtlicue as a goddess he previously killed, adding another unanswered question.[33]
Life as an Animistic Spirit
On the eleventh floor, Mordecai becomes an Animistic Spirit. He can inhabit objects but struggles to move and speak aloud. He remains with the party as he adjusts to another form imposed on him by the dungeon.[34]

Relationships
Carl and Donut
Mordecai teaches Carl and Donut how to use their abilities and survive their first encounters. Restrictions on boss information mean he cannot spare them from scouting dangers themselves. He also has a personal stake in their success: one of his crawlers must reach the fourth floor for his last contracted season to count.[35]
Carl and Donut secretly plan to make Mordecai her manager, tying him to their party and costing him resources and independence. His anger leads to the drinking episode for which he later apologizes. Over time, the group comes to rely on his daily work, even as he continues to resent how the appointment was arranged.[36]
Odette
Odette trained Mordecai during his crawl. Despite his open anger toward her, he recommends her show to Carl and Donut because he knows the exposure could help them. His early references to her advice about his brother’s class hint at the history between them.[39]
Mordecai reveals that he testified against Odette at a trial while working as her manager. She admits that she hurt him, but the acknowledgment does not repair their relationship.[40]
The prologue shows Odette deceiving Mordecai and coercing Chaco into sacrificing Uzzi so they can escape. Her later confession describes the financial pressure, ambition and earlier grief behind her decision, as well as the eventual destruction of Mordecai’s NPC family. Mordecai has not forgiven her for his brother’s death.[41]
Chaco
Seeing Chaco drives Mordecai to attack him, earning a seven-day timeout. Carl and Donut have to cope without their manager before learning why Mordecai hates him.[42]
Katia and the shelter’s dependents
Mordecai shelters children, buys supplies for vulnerable attendants and treats Katia even though her death would remove a threat to Donut. Odette’s account of his lost NPC family helps explain how much these dependents mean to him. He takes care of them while still warning Carl about promising more help than the party can safely provide.[43]
