Appearance and personality
Kavax is a huge, bald Gold with a forked red beard. He is fierce in battle and openly affectionate with his family and friends. He dotes on his fox, Sophocles, and welcomes people with elaborate family rituals. He is still angry over Pax’s murder and sometimes judges others by their Color or family.[1]
Injuries and grief have weakened Kavax by the defense of Phobos. He returns from captivity with a broken back and uses a wheelchair. Reuniting with his family and Sophocles gives him some comfort after the fighting.[2]
Attributes and abilities
He brings fighting ability, ships, household resources and political standing to an alliance. He can negotiate after a chaotic defeat and supply the concealed fleet needed to reverse an ambush. His willingness to trust Ragnar’s command also lets him recognize competence outside the Gold officers who usually claim it.[1]
History
Book 2
Golden Son
Kavax and Daxo fight for House Augustus when the gala erupts. Afterward, Kavax tells Darrow that Pax trusted him, so he will too. He refuses to blame Darrow for his son’s death and welcomes him into the family.
The Telemanus fleet helps spring the trap against the Bellona force at Europa. Kavax remains a valuable ally throughout the campaign, although he initially supports restrictions on Victra based on her family. His forces approach during the Triumph massacre, but the immediate outcome of that intervention is left unresolved.[1]
Book 3
Morning Star
After a confused attack on Quicksilver’s meeting, Darrow captures Kavax. He explains that Mustang knew Darrow was a Red before the Triumph and that Orion escaped with the Pax. He also talks about the heroic stories he taught Mustang as a child and her belief in protecting the weak.
He accepts Darrow as family across the Color boundary and helps renew contact with Mustang. Later he survives capture during the fleet campaign and is recovered. When an armed response to a shipboard uprising could become a massacre, he accompanies Darrow without launching the assault.[3]
Book 4
Iron Gold
Kavax is wounded rescuing victims of the Red Hand and falls into the river. Lyria helps save him. In gratitude, he brings her and Liam into his household, finds work that allows her to immigrate, teaches her to read and puts Liam in school.
During the kidnapping of Pax and Electra, he recovers from the gas enough to fight back and kill Dano. Volga’s shot severely burns him. Lyria believes him dead, but Niobe later confirms that he is barely alive.[4]
Book 5
Dark Age
Recovery brings pain and self-blame, yet Kavax continues to steady Virginia as a daughter. The coup kills Daxo, adding another son to his losses. He helps coordinate Virginia’s escape, sends Cassius toward Mercury and later reunites her with Pax. The destruction of the murdered senators’ remains denies his family its customary heartwood-tree burial.[5]
Book 6
Light Bringer
Kavax admits that injury and grief have weakened him but stays beside Virginia during the defense of Phobos. He leaves Sophocles in her care and leads a surface counterattack. Apollonius captures him, and a later report places him alive with a broken back. His eventual return in a wheelchair confirms survival and allows reunion with Niobe, Thraxa and Sophocles.[2]
Relationships
Pax au Telemanus
Kavax trusts Darrow because Pax trusted him. He tells him plainly that he does not blame him for his son’s death.[6]
Mustang
Virginia grows up close to the Telemanus family. Kavax treats her with the warmth and affection she rarely receives at home.[7]
Kavax teaches Virginia stories about heroes protecting the weak. He sees those lessons in the woman she becomes.[8]
Kavax supports Virginia as a daughter while recovering from his injuries and grieving for Daxo.[9]
Lyria
Lyria helps save Kavax from the river. He repays her by bringing her and Liam into his household, finding her work and arranging education for them both.[10]
Thraxa au Telemanus
Thraxa fights for Darrow and Virginia while Kavax is captured again. She is there when he returns alive, allowing the family to reunite after fearing another loss.[11]
