Valtay Neural Enhancer 275 permanently adds altitude and airspeed readings to Carl’s interface. It modifies his brain, so he cannot take it off or reverse the upgrade.[1]

Choosing a reference frame
Carl can choose what the readings are measured against. The display can show speed relative to the surface or height relative to a selected gravitational zone. Those choices matter when he uses the readings to work out the floor’s size and layout.[1]

The Gate of the Feral Gods
After consulting Mordecai, Carl takes the enhancer. The sea-level reading places him about ninety-two kilometers underground. When he sets the tomb area as another zero point, the town reads 8,932 meters above it. The distances make an easy upward escape through the submerged tower seem much less likely.[1]
