Introduction
Appearance and Personality
Mongo begins at level one, young and unbonded. Odette identifies his species as a velociraptor. His repeated biting and attacks make the carrier essential while Carl and Donut learn to handle him.[2]
He grows larger and more colorful as he levels, eventually becoming big enough for Donut to ride. Excitement can override his training, particularly when he has something to chase. He also becomes fiercely protective, defending an unconscious Donut despite severe injuries.[3]
Mongo reaches full size at level fifteen but continues gaining levels. He still needs training as a mount, throwing Donut off and making abrupt leaps that cause problems in cramped tunnels.[4]
After the falling-house battle, he brings back Bonnie’s stuffed pink rabbit, a small comfort amid the survivors’ grief.[5]
Shi Maria badly burns Mongo while controlling Carl and leaves him without his right wing. He survives, but the regrowth potion has not been given to him by the end of the book.[6]
The rare potion restores his wing and burned body, though he remains subdued afterward. Kiwi’s return in an ursine body initially confuses him. Their affection continues, and they later have two daughters.[7]

Attributes and Abilities
Hunting with Donut changes Mongo’s marker from hostile to neutral. When she rescues him, their bond forms and he joins the party as her Royal Steed. He still needs work on obedience.[8]
Mongo can detect a stealthed lemur and jump roughly twenty feet from a standstill. Fang caps add electricity to his bite. Donut’s Clockwork Triplicate makes temporary copies of him to distract enemies.
Meat Hooks can force Mongo to charge, explaining an alley attack first mistaken for disobedience. His carrier provides transport and recovery when its conditions allow.[9]
At full size, he gains Earthquake, giving his leaps a small chance to knock enemies down. His kills can trigger the party’s Mascot benefit. His strength and mobility make him useful in mounted combat, though sudden movements and low ceilings endanger Donut and nearby allies.
Carl directs Mongo to kill a regenerating bartender repeatedly so the party can collect body parts for a portal mechanism. Mongo carries out the attacks without understanding the plan behind them.[10]
Putting Mongo in his carrier reduces the load on the balloon without changing his actual size. Later fang caps increase his movement speed and Strength.
Denise’s anti-magic effect stops the carrier’s usual recovery and disables many of the party’s attacks. Mongo remains vulnerable until the suppression ends.[11]
Earthquake helps him strike invisible enemies on the ground. Against Claude, he attacks from inside a wound, accidentally cutting Carl when the falling boss traps them together. Poison artillery can also force him into the carrier even when his companions resist it.
The adapted animal-charm potion requires Mongo’s blood. After Donut agrees, the party sedates him, collects it and heals him. The potion is then used on Kiwi.[12]
The regrowth potion restores his wing and grants Healing Appetite. He can still suffer serious injuries: Gustavo nearly kills him before Rend intervenes. Mongo later earns the kill credit for eating Tagg’s mechanical-organ refuge.[13]
His racing-floor pet hat grants conditional protection and a disease effect on bites. Donut adds Steady Stride to his saddle before the parade to make riding more stable.[14]

History
Book 1
Dungeon Crawler Carl
Selection and the first bond
Donut chooses Mongo instead of the grub Carl prefers. Biscuits fail to tame him, and an attack during training gets him expelled. The party uses his carrier while working on obedience and hunting with him.
Shared hunts make him neutral, and Donut’s rescue completes their pet bond. He joins at level one with the Royal Steed title. Odette later identifies his species, helping them understand the animal he will become.[2]
Choose Book 1 or later above to read this part of the history.
Book 2
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario
The circus and protecting Donut
Mongo struggles to follow commands when excited but helps defeat Terror and grows quickly. His clockwork copies initially frighten him, then become playmates. He detects hidden prey and fights through the circus encounters.
While Donut lies unconscious in the shelter, Mongo keeps the janitors away despite needles and dwindling health. A pet potion heals him afterward. He has grown large enough for her to ride.[15]
Equipment, compulsion and the stairs
Fang caps improve his bite, but Meat Hooks forces him into an alley ambush that first looks like a failure of training. He later helps fight berserkers and bites off Ricky Joe’s arm after an attack.
By the final investigation, Mongo is level thirteen and pony-sized. He waits in the carrier while his copies carry a surveillance scroll, then descends with Carl, Donut and Katia.[16]
Choose Book 2 or later above to read this part of the history.
Book 3
The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook
Full growth in the Iron Tangle
Mongo charges through train compartments, sometimes bowling over allies. At level fifteen he reaches full size and gains Earthquake. Donut finds that a saddle alone does not make him an obedient mount.
His abrupt leaps and the tunnels’ low clearance complicate mounted fighting. Carl later uses him to kill the regenerating bartender for the portal plan. By the end of the floor he is level twenty-six, with further training still needed.[17]
Choose Book 3 or later above to read this part of the history.
Book 4
The Gate of the Feral Gods
The balloon, Bonnie and Maggie
Storing Mongo in the carrier lightens the balloon’s load, and new fang caps increase his speed and Strength. Anti-magic suppression disables his usual recovery during the falling-house battle. Afterward, he returns Bonnie’s stuffed rabbit.
After Carl removes Maggie from Chris, the exposed parasite attacks him. Mongo kills her, ending the possession while Chris remains alive.[18]
Choose Book 4 or later above to read this part of the history.
Book 5
The Butcher’s Masquerade
Kiwi and the river battles
Mongo runs to Kiwi with Donut still riding him and mates with her. Donut fears he has abandoned them, but he returns exhausted.
He fights through the hunter campaign until poison artillery forces him into shelter. Against Claude, he enters a wound made by Donut’s spells. The falling boss traps Carl alongside him, and Mongo accidentally cuts him before they escape.[19]
The charm, the pageant and Vrah
Donut initially objects to taking his blood for the animal-charm potion. She later agrees to collection under sedation followed by healing. Mongo stays in his carrier until Kiwi is successfully charmed. Kiwi then takes lightning meant for him, and both need treatment.
They fight together in the final raids. For the pageant, Donut trains Mongo to moonwalk with elaborate effects supplied by their friends. At the masquerade, he and Kiwi kill Vrah, and Mongo continues destroying her body after Kiwi returns to the stage.[20]

Book 6

Mordecai wants to analyze the rare regrowth formula before it is used. Mongo has yet to receive the available potion when the book ends.[21]

Book 7
This Inevitable Ruin
Recovery, rescue and the daughters
Carl gives him the potion, restoring his body and granting Healing Appetite. Kiwi returns pregnant in her original ursine form. Tina calls Mongo papa, despite Donut’s objection that he is not her biological father.
Mongo kills D’Nadia, defeating the Prism faction. Later, Gustavo nearly kills him before Rend intervenes. Kiwi gives birth to two female legendary hybrids, whose intelligence prevents pet ownership. Mongo also earns the kill credit when he consumes Tagg inside the discarded mechanical organs.
Kiwi, Tina and the daughters leave with the evacuated city and their protectors. Mongo remains with Carl and Donut, separated from his family by the different escape routes available to them.[22]
