Introduction
Zev is the Borant Assistant Communications Representative assigned to Carl and Donut. She arranges their interviews and other appearances, keeps them informed about their audience, and passes on instructions from the people running the crawl. She wants to help them survive, but helping them can get her into trouble with her employers.[1]
Appearance and Personality
Zev is a Kua-tin. When she first visits Carl and Donut in the dungeon, she wears a protective suit that is much too large for her. She is nervous about the assignment and admits that she fears both her superiors and what they might do to her family. Talking about television with Donut helps her relax.[1]
Zev behaves very differently after returning from reeducation. Her advice sounds rehearsed, and she gives Donut unusually short answers. Donut notices the change and worries about her, despite Zev’s attempts to reassure her.[2]
Zev normally works from a tank, but she wears a breather when Carl and Donut meet her in a low-gravity production trailer. She remains anxious after Valtay takes over Borant: colleagues have disappeared, her access to production systems has been restricted, and she does not know whether she will keep her job. She still speaks up for Carl, however. The Popov brothers wish their own liaison would do the same for them.[3]

Attributes and Abilities
As a dungeon administrator, Zev can contact Carl and Donut directly and arrange for them to leave the dungeon for appearances. Her arrival triggers a warning that prevents nearby weapons from being drawn. Borant and the AI monitor her work, and she can be punished for giving the crawlers information they are not supposed to have.[4]
Zev handles bookings and negotiations for Carl and Donut. She tells Carl that she already has power of attorney for him, allowing her to negotiate on his behalf. She knows how the shows and their contracts work and can take his proposals to the producers.[5]
Zev follows the audience’s reactions and explains how appearances can affect fan support and sponsor rewards. Her access also lets her hear some conversations that ordinary viewers cannot. Carl discovers this when she interrupts a private argument between him and Katia.[6]
Zev explains the rules Carl must follow during interviews, conventions and other trips outside the dungeon. She also helps him understand Syndicate law. After he attacks Nihit, she warns that assault charges could follow him out of the crawl and force him to work for whoever buys the resulting labor warrant.
When Valtay begins monitoring their conversations more closely, Zev has to find less direct ways to warn Carl. During the convention, she repeatedly reminds him that he will return to the exact spot where he left the dungeon. He eventually realizes she is warning him about an ambush.[7]
Zev receives information from the showrunners that the crawlers cannot obtain themselves. This includes what the administrators know about Lucia Mar’s connection to children on the surface. Her information is sometimes incomplete, especially as the conflict outside the dungeon worsens.[8]

History
Book 1
Dungeon Crawler Carl
Assigned to the rising stars
Borant assigns Zev to Carl and Donut as their audience grows. This is her first field assignment. She visits them in the dungeon, explains their interview obligations and opens a direct chat channel. She also admits that she is afraid of her employers and fears they will punish her family if she fails.
Zev helps arrange their appearances and tries to keep them alive between broadcasts. After she gives Carl an early warning, the AI suspends her. She successfully appeals the suspension on a question of timing, though she remains worried about being watched. Meanwhile, she and Donut begin bonding over television.[9]

Book 2
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario
An intermediary with limited power
Zev takes Carl’s proposed deal to the producers of Vengeance of the Daughter. She uses her power of attorney to negotiate for him, giving the producers a financial interest in his survival.
She continues arranging appearances outside the dungeon. After Carl is attacked during one of these trips, Zev explains that the production-trailer booking schedule was public. That information could have helped someone plan the attack, but it does not establish who arranged it.[10]

Book 3
The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook
Pressure from home and a forced replacement
Zev tells Carl and Donut that viewers dislike Katia and pushes the party to keep up with its appearances. She also interrupts an argument between Carl and Katia that they thought was private, revealing that the producers can hear more than the audience does.
At a later meeting, Zev warns that Loita may take over as their representative through Katia’s former party. She hints that things are getting worse at home, and Carl asks her to stay. Loita eventually replaces her and says she has been sent to a temporary reeducation retreat following a personal tragedy. Carl and Donut cannot contact Zev to find out what has happened.[11]

Book 4
The Gate of the Feral Gods
A return under constraint
Zev returns as Carl and Donut’s social media manager, speaking with them through private chat while Loita handles their public appearances. Her advice sounds rehearsed, and her short replies worry Donut. This arrangement is brief: an audience board takes over the social media role, and Zev is left working as Loita’s assistant. Loita refuses to let Carl and Donut meet Zev to say goodbye.
Loita tells Carl that Zev’s relatives have been abused to force her to support the Bloom, the ruling Kua-tin nationalist party. Zev later resumes work as Carl and Donut’s representative. When Carl floods Larracos, she reports the damage to merchants and faction supplies and tells him that an attempt to stop the attack through an injunction has failed.[12]

Book 5
The Butcher’s Masquerade
Beatrice and the change of ownership
Zev schedules another appearance on Odette’s show with increased security. Before the interview, Odette reveals that Beatrice survived the collapse. Zev helps explain the rescue and the insurance arrangement behind it, revealing details Odette would rather keep quiet.
After the interview, Donut admits that she has been passing information about Valtay contacts to Zev and the Borant Emancipation Front. Valtay’s takeover of Borant does not make Zev’s position secure. Some employees remain in their jobs while others disappear, and she does not know what the new owners will do next.[13]
Returning Carl to an ambush
During Carl’s convention visit, Zev confirms that Donut survived an attack by Lucia Mar. She cannot explain freely because both the AI and Valtay security are listening. Instead, she repeatedly stresses that Carl will return to the exact place where he left the dungeon. Carl eventually learns that hunters are waiting to ambush him there.
Zev tells Carl that her family was punished after she refused to wear a pin. With her job still uncertain and colleagues disappearing, she is afraid for them. Before returning to the dungeon, Carl asks her to take care of Donut if he does not survive.[14]
The autograph event and the labor warrant
Zev helps arrange Carl’s autograph session and the announcement of his replacement sponsor. The Popov brothers admire her willingness to stand up for him and compare her with their less assertive liaison. After Carl attacks Nihit with a pen, Zev explains that Syndicate law applies in the studio. Any charges would wait until Carl left the dungeon, when someone could buy his labor warrant and make him work off the sentence.[15]
Keeping the show within its intended story
Zev tries to stop Carl from interfering with Signet’s planned assault. She objects when Signet is unexpectedly invited to the masquerade and is angry when Carl tells her how the showrunners control her story. Zev also refuses to explain Lucia Mar’s situation at this point.
After the masquerade, Zev confirms that Carl and Donut’s faction buy-in has succeeded. When Carl calls for a rule change, however, she cuts off his appeal.[16]

Book 6
The Eye of the Bedlam Bride
The crisis spreads beyond the show
Zev objects when a liaison interrupts an interview, but she cannot make him withdraw his order. She also advises Carl against appointing Odette as his adjutant. Mordecai’s anger toward Odette could lead him to break his contract, endangering the children he shelters.
As the crisis outside the dungeon worsens, Zev reports disappearing handlers and the arrival of emergency officials. She fears that activating the failsafe could quarantine the system while she is still outside it. She later warns Carl that the real Syndicate council is on Earth and that a dispute involving Residuals is underway.[17]

Book 7
This Inevitable Ruin
Reporting a system she cannot contain
Zev passes on an order for Carl to avoid Agatha. She also reports what she knows about the failsafe and Formidable, though the loss of Aryl’s network nodes leaves her uncertain about events outside the local system.
She eventually explains what the administrators know about Lucia Mar’s connection to children on the surface. They expected the connection to end when Lucia’s dog died, but it did not. They now fear that killing Lucia could kill the children as well. Later, as a battle breaks out among the ships, Zev says the council ordered her to destroy showrunner headquarters and that she refused.[18]

Book 8
A Parade of Horribles
Keeping the broadcast running
When Cascadia cannot finish explaining the tenth-floor race, Zev takes over. She passes on the team rules, reception requirements and route changes, then helps explain the AI’s approaching parade.
Following Cascadia’s overdose and the appearance of an unidentified goddess, Zev reports that headquarters has been locked down and an office on the surface has taken control. During the parade, she tells Carl that its compulsory feed has replaced other broadcasts across the center system.[19]

Relationships
Donut
Zev and Donut quickly find common ground in television. Their conversations give Zev a chance to move beyond formal instructions, and Donut begins treating her as a friend.[20]
Carl
Loita
Loita threatens to take Zev’s job and eventually replaces her while Zev is sent away for reeducation.[25]
When Zev returns, she initially has to work under Loita. Loita tells Carl that Zev’s mother and aunts have been abused to force Zev to support the Bloom, the ruling Kua-tin nationalist party. Zev later gets her old role back, but the threats against her family remain a concern.[26]
