Chapter 1

Carl, Donut, and Mongo teleport to the third floor, where Mordecai is waiting in the form of a handsome, tuxedo-clad incubus. Before they can explore, they must choose their races and classes for the new level.

Donut immediately decides to remain a cat. Her best class options are Artist Alley Mogul, NecroBard, and Former Child Actor. Carl and Mordecai recommend Artist Alley Mogul because its Pathfinder skill would help them locate stairwells, shops, and guilds. Donut pretends to agree, then chooses Former Child Actor instead. The class is built around charisma and luck, but its most important feature is the Manager Benefit, which allows Mordecai to remain with them for the rest of the crawl. Mordecai is furious, but Carl lets Donut take the blame, following Odette’s warning that Mordecai would eventually forgive Donut but never forgive him.

Chapter 2

Carl has 398 race options. The AI recommends Hobgoblin, Human, and Sasquatch, but he discovers a hidden choice at the bottom of the list: Primal. Choosing it will leave his appearance and current racial skills unchanged while allowing advanced skills to reach level 20, at the cost of one point from every base stat. Mordecai explains that the Primals conquered the universe before mysteriously disappearing. Because nobody knows what they looked like, the dungeon simply gives Primal crawlers their existing appearance. Carl chooses it.

For his class, Carl selects Compensated Anarchist, an Earth-exclusive monk and rogue hybrid unlocked by his explosives skill and enormous audience. It grants bomb-making, trapmaking, stealth, and escape abilities. The most unusual is Escape Plan, which reveals hidden doors and unlocks the Dungeon Locator, a concealed map legend at major intersections that points toward exits, bosses, and other important locations. The class also gives him access to the unknown Naughty Boys Employment Agency. Once their stats are settled, the group enters a bustling village on the third floor.

Chapter 3

The third floor is known as the Over City. Its scattered villages sit across the top of a giant dormant volcanic crater connected to floors 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18. According to the floor’s story, a great monster once released poisonous gas that killed or transformed most of the population. The survivors’ descendants occupy the villages, while the transformed creatures roam the ruins between them. Night is far more dangerous than day.

Their starting village is small, and its general shops are badly overpriced. Mordecai sends Carl and Donut toward Skyfowl Settlement, a larger town thirty-four kilometers east with better shops and a tutorial guild. He plans to meet them there after finding a pub, leaving Carl, Donut, and Mongo to cross the ruins alone.

Chapter 4

Not far into the ruins, a knife strikes Carl’s chest but fails to penetrate the Trollskin Shirt he acquired on the first floor. The attacker is a Former Circus Lemur wearing a painted human skull as a mask. The creatures are feral descendants of Grimaldi’s Traveling Circus, and their attack triggers a quest called The Show Must Go On, which requires Carl and Donut to discover why the circus still exists and put an end to it.

A giraffe covered in lemurs charges through the street, hurling them like projectiles. Carl and Donut fight toward a nearby safe room, killing a Terror the Clown along the way and collecting a Big Top Ticket. They reach a tavern called The Belly-Rubbed Pug, run by a Bopca named Gordo. Mordecai teleports in blackout drunk, asks about two women and their grandmother, then vomits and passes out.

Chapter 5

Mongo reaches level three and nearly doubles in size. While Mordecai sleeps off his drinking, Carl and Donut open their reward boxes. Donut receives a magical collar that keeps Mongo visible on the map, along with an Earth Hobby Potion that gives her the skill Scutelliphily. She also learns Clockwork Triplicate, which creates two short-lived, independent copies of a pet or minion. Her first Mongo clones are mirror images that collapse into gears after one minute. Carl drinks his own Hobby Potion and gains Cesta Punta, another unfamiliar skill.

Carl tests his new Bomb Surgeon ability, which lets him sense how close dynamite is to exploding, though his smoke bombs are still too large for his slingshot. Outside the safe room, they notice three dead crawlers on the map. A stealthy lemur is watching the bodies from a rooftop, so Carl and Donut kill it and the nearby circus creatures before continuing toward the big top.

Chapter 6

The dead crawlers are sisters Grace, Nica, and Lea Bautista, all killed and looted by the lemurs. Carl takes two strength rings, while Donut receives the Enchanted Anklet of the Fallen Oak. Besides its stat bonuses, the anklet improves Double Tap, increasing the chance that a repeated attack will cause critical damage.

From a nearby building, they study the circus. Three enormous tents stand among wagons, cages, giraffes, clowns, and an ogre with a tentacle growing from his neck. The circus is fortifying its perimeter and preparing magical mortars. Mordecai orders them back before nightfall, but the bombardment knocks Carl and Donut into a basement.

Donut escapes with Puddle Jumper and finds Tsarina Signet waiting outside. The level 60 elite is a half-Naiad, half-high elf featured on a nearby wanted poster. Carl feels an unnatural attraction to her and realizes she is using a charm effect. Mordecai identifies it as Puppy Dog, a compulsion that grows stronger with exposure. Carl breaks his own pinky to snap himself out of it. Signet claims she only came to see whether they were safe.

Chapter 7

Six Mold Lions surround the group. The former circus animals have been consumed by glowing fungus, with wormlike growths replacing their manes. Carl, Donut, and Mongo defeat them using Confusing Fog, defensive magic, a raised lion, and Clockwork Triplicate.

Afterward, Signet admits that bringing her tattoos to life requires a living blood sacrifice. She had been waiting for Carl or Donut to be wounded so she could use one of them, but neither was cut. As they leave, she offers to explain her history with Grimaldi if they help her attack the circus. Carl agrees to meet her the next night, after she has summoned her forces by other means.

Back at the tavern, Mordecai warns that elites usually belong to storylines written by the dungeon producers. Those plots continue with or without crawler involvement, and the writers may interfere to protect their preferred narrative. The recap show also announces that killing noncombatant NPCs no longer awards experience and that city guards have been strengthened because someone has already begun murdering villagers.

Chapter 8

Carl wakes alone on a mildew-covered couch after being stunned, paralyzed, and unconscious for fifteen hours. Donut is missing from the map. Signet speaks from the darkness and reveals that she used Water Lily to put Donut to sleep. If Signet dies, Donut dies with her, forcing Carl to help with the circus assault.

Signet explains that Scolopendra, the monster beneath the volcano, released the poisonous cloud that ruined the Over City. Grimaldi, whom Signet loved, was performing in the center ring when the cloud transformed him into a vine. He infected the other performers, turning the lemurs, clowns, and animals into extensions of himself that die and regrow from his spores. Signet was outside the tent and escaped the transformation.

To summon her tattoo army, she needs a living sacrifice. She has captured Heather, a former black bear whose face has been stripped away and whose claws have been replaced by white worms.

Chapter 9

Heather is also a level 19 Neighborhood Boss. Carl fights and kills her alone while Signet performs the blood ritual. The bear’s blood rises into the air, and Signet’s tattoos peel away from her body as enormous two-dimensional warriors. Their flat forms are difficult to damage from the front but vulnerable from the side.

The tattoo army overruns the circus grounds, destroying lemurs, clowns, and giraffe artillery before surrounding the main tent. A magical barrier prevents Signet and her soldiers from entering. Carl can pass through with the Big Top Ticket he collected earlier, which guarantees safe passage as long as he stays outside the three performance rings. Once inside, he must destroy one tent pole in each ring to collapse the structure and break the spell.

Chapter 10

A clown named Clammy checks Carl’s ticket and allows him into the big top. Despite the battle outside, the performers continue their acts as though nothing is wrong. The smells and sounds remind Carl of a shabby circus his mother took him to on his fourth birthday, during one of her temporary separations from his father. The memory leaves him furious at everything the dungeon has taken from him.

At the center of the tent stands Grimaldi, now an enormous vine and a level 85 City Boss. Following a plan Mordecai prepared, Carl poisons himself and allows the Pestiferous Vines to drink his blood. He then heals himself and waits to see whether the poison will affect Grimaldi.

Chapter 11

Carl uses Zev to deliver an ultimatum to the producers. He knows Grimaldi belongs to Signet’s storyline, Vengeance of the Daughter, and that the boss’s death will probably unleash something that kills him. In exchange for guaranteed survival for himself and Donut through the sixth floor, Carl offers to sign an exclusive agreement to pursue elite-related quests there. If the producers refuse, he will feed Grimaldi healthy blood and neutralize the poison, ruining their planned climax. They accept.

Carl gives Grimaldi healthy blood, then asks an ogre named Apollon for an ice cream cone. The cone is filled with worms. Carl casts Wisp Armor for magical resistance and temporary immunity to mind control, eats the worms, and hears the parasites welcoming him into Grimaldi’s family. He escapes before the spell expires.

Outside, Grimaldi speaks to Signet through Carl and accuses her of turning against them. The quest completes, and Signet promises Donut will wake at sunrise before entering the big top. Zev then reaches Carl with urgent news: Donut’s health has fallen below twenty percent.

Chapter 12

Carl races back through the ruins. Donut’s Cockroach ability has already activated, meaning she reached zero health and returned with five percent. Mongo, now twice his previous size, is defending her from Street Urchins, the spiked janitor mobs that emerge at night. The creatures are attacking the garbage barricade around Donut rather than Donut herself, but both she and Mongo are covered in their long black spikes. Carl heals them, and Donut wakes at dawn as promised.

The circus has vanished. In its place is a staircase to the fourth floor that had been hidden beneath Grimaldi. Carl assumes Signet has already gone below and that her sixth-floor storyline will continue without them for now.

On the road to Skyfowl Settlement, Zev tells them they have been booked on Danger Zone with Ripper Wonton, a roundtable show featuring crawlers and intergalactic celebrities. They reach the much larger Skyfowl Settlement that afternoon and enter its tutorial guild.

Chapter 13

At the guild, Carl processes more than twenty achievements and invests twelve stat points in Strength and Constitution. He and Donut open a large collection of loot boxes. Mongo receives Fang Caps, which add poison and paralysis chances to his bites, while Carl collects an assortment of bombs and explosives.

Carl also receives a casino chip worth 100,000 gold, redeemable only at the Desperado Club’s High Roller games. A Scroll of Upgrade improves his Enchanted BigBoi Boxers, adding stat bonuses and the Freeballing Benefit. Attacks originating below his waist now deal double damage, and related skills train faster. The drawback is that the boxers count as the only clothing he can wear below the waist, effectively ruling out pants.

Chapter 14

The group settles at the One-Eyed Narwhal, a pub run by a large bald man named Fitz. An orc named GumGum approaches in tears and asks for help, but Mordecai immediately turns her away to keep the party from being pulled into another quest.

The next day is spent buying alchemical supplies for Mordecai and a magical carrier for Mongo. In the afternoon, Carl and Donut grind experience by hunting Brain Boilers, floating squidlike creatures with psionic attacks.

On their way back, they find GumGum stacking roughly fifteen female bodies outside the city walls. Every corpse has the same twisted shoulders and has been drained of most of its blood. GumGum says the bodies appear throughout the settlement’s alleys each morning, with no indication of where they came from. The discovery triggers a new quest, The Sex Workers Who Fell from the Heavens.

Chapter 15

Carl and Donut visit the Desperado Club, which exists on a separate dimensional plane shared by all of its entrances across the floor. Its pet room is closed after Lucia Mar and her dogs went berserk the previous night.

Mordecai meets Quint, a half-djinn, half-Garbage Scowl pharmacist. He trades for a starter alchemy kit filled with chemicals and herbs, and Quint adds three addictive hallucinogenic candies called Blitz Sticks. Carl stores them for later.

On the walk back, Mordecai finally explains why he resented becoming Donut’s manager. His original contract would have freed him as soon as Donut reached the fourth floor. He could have left then and earned bonuses only if he voluntarily stayed while she continued. Carl realizes Odette knew exactly what she was taking from Mordecai when she engineered Donut’s class choice.

Chapter 16

At the Desperado Club’s Silk Road market, Donut uses her charisma to negotiate for goblin dynamite and Hob-Lobbers. On the way out, Mongo catches a scent and bolts into an alley.

There they find GumGum dead with her chest torn open. Several krasue hover above her: ghost-class creatures made of flying women’s heads with their organs and intestines hanging beneath them. Magical attacks can harm the heads, but the creatures cannot be permanently killed until their hidden bodies are destroyed.

Three krasue escape, leaving behind the city elf who used magic to lure Mongo into the alley. Carl and Donut kill him before he can get away.

Chapter 17

The dead city elf is Vicente. Carl finds a Meat Hooks spell scroll on him, explaining how Mongo was lured, along with a uniform marked “201st Security Group, Magical Ops.” GumGum carries only four gold, a Gate Pass signed by Magistrate Featherfall, and a mysterious document written in necroscript. The pass protects its bearer from the city guards. Mordecai says only a necromancer could read the document and suspects they may be dealing with a lich.

He also explains that city elves form chaotic militia cults and worship the skyfowl through an elaborate mythology centered on the goddess Apito. The shoulder wounds on the murdered women suggest they were carried and dropped by flying creatures. The evidence may connect the killings to Magistrate Featherfall, a black cleric with power over the undead.

That night, Carl promises Donut they will find whoever is responsible and make them pay. Something immediately strikes the roof. By morning, they discover another woman’s body with a message carved into her back: “No, you won’t.”

Chapter 18

Carl and Donut take the body to the magistrate’s office, which has no ground-level entrance. Donut uses Puddle Jumper to reach the third-floor landing. Inside, a skyfowl receptionist named Miss Quill works among hundreds of collectible stuffed animals. Carl drops the corpse on her desk, scattering the collection and prompting her to summon the guards. He displays Magistrate Featherfall’s Gate Pass, allowing them to leave. They also learn that Featherfall’s door is magically sealed and that he now appears only at night.

While they wait, Carl and Donut hunt for experience. In a pool containing an already-dead Neighborhood Boss, Carl is suddenly blinded and surrounded by red dots. He throws dynamite, nearly kills himself, and wakes on a roof as the boss corpse explodes. The attackers are Shambling Berserkers, stitched-together undead that are harmless in daylight but dangerous in darkness. Donut suspects Featherfall sent them. They quickly destroy the remaining creatures and leave for their scheduled interview.

Chapter 19

Danger Zone with Ripper Wonton is filmed aboard a large production ship. The panel includes Princess D’nadia, the Saccathian royal; Manasa, a cobra-headed pop star controlled by the Valtay Corporation; the human comedian Tucker; and the crawler Hekla, who asks Carl and Donut to help level one of her nearby teammates.

When Ripper asks about the Skull Empire, Carl compares authoritarian rule to a frog being slowly boiled. He tells viewers that a government afraid of what its people say likely has something to hide, and that citizens should act when conditions become intolerable.

Moments later, Manasa disappears and the studio violently collapses. Her trailer has been struck by a pulse weapon. Prince Stalwart of the Skull Empire claims Carl’s remarks were sedition and that Syndicate law authorized him to execute Carl and Donut from his yacht, but the attack hit Manasa instead. Princess D’nadia condemns the strike, and the Valtay retaliate by destroying Stalwart’s yacht.

Chapter 20

After the studio plays Manasa’s final performance, Carl tells Donut he believes the entire incident was staged. Stalwart’s statement appeared too quickly, and the last-minute trailer switch may have been designed to provoke war between the Valtay and the Skull Empire. Borant stands to benefit from the conflict.

Mordecai has located the 201st Security Group’s headquarters, marked on the map as a Corrupt Temple. The elves call Donut the Oak Fell, their version of the antichrist, and become enraged when her Enchanted Anklet of the Fallen Oak rattles. They eat acorns to activate Magical Fervor.

A pregnant dwarf named Eunice attacks one elf with a rolling pin just as city guards arrive. Carl shoves a guard and is branded a troublemaker, making every guard hostile to him. When a dwarf child named Ricky Joe punches Mongo, Mongo bites off and swallows the boy’s arm. Carl grabs Ricky Joe, and Donut uses Puddle Jumper to carry the group to a nearby roof. A Boom Jug left behind destroys the temple, the neighboring building, the remaining elves, and two guards. Carl gives Ricky Joe a healing potion, but it cannot restore the missing arm.

Chapter 21

The group hides on the roof until sunset. Ricky Joe remains with them, holding his severed arm and dead salamander, until his mother calls him home. The guards eventually withdraw to the warehouse where they sleep.

At the One-Eyed Narwhal, Mordecai introduces Katia Grim, a doppelganger crawler and Monster Truck Driver sent by Hekla. Katia still struggles to maintain a convincing human form. She has poor offensive stats but an extraordinary Constitution score, a once-per-fight damage reflection skill called Second Fuel Tank, and a Rush ability. Because Donut promised Hekla they would help, Katia joins the party.

Mordecai has also learned that GumGum’s “letter” was a Suppurating Eye scroll. The lich spell turns blood into a listening device, meaning someone has heard everything since Carl picked it up. Later, Carl, Donut, and Katia return to the magistrate’s building. Carl has hidden dynamite behind Miss Quill’s display shelves, intending to blast through the floor above the magically sealed office.

Chapter 22

The explosion destroys much of the building. Carl receives achievements for killing the acting magistrate and for accidentally completing another crawler’s quest by killing Miss Quill, who was secretly a level 30 Neighborhood Boss. He also becomes Magistrate Carl of the Medium Skyfowl Settlement. Their own quest remains open because they still do not know why the women were killed.

Inside, they find dozens of female corpses hanging upside down, their heads removed as purple energy swirls around them. Magistrate Featherfall’s mummified body hangs in a massive bone structure, proving he has been dead for a long time. The room is magically muted, so Donut climbs outside the affected area and casts Torch through the roof.

The fire reveals Burgundy, the dark-haired assistant they saw earlier. She explains that Miss Quill used her dead husband’s identity and position as cover. The greater threat is Remex, Miss Quill’s husband, who is hiding in the guards’ warehouse while attempting a spell that will restore him to life. As the building collapses, Burgundy begs to be killed. Donut grants her request with Magic Missile, but the quest still does not end.

Chapter 23

While escaping the ruins, Carl grabs a small charred display case that once held one of Miss Quill’s prized stuffed animals. In the street, they meet Daniel Bautista, a Tigran Swashbuckler who had come to kill Miss Quill for his own quest. He recognizes the rings Carl wears and the anklet on Donut’s leg as property taken from his sisters Grace, Nica, and Lea. Carl explains that the sisters were already dead when he found them and that he killed the lemurs responsible. Daniel gives Carl his chat information before disappearing into the night.

Carl makes a ladder from scrap and plants his remaining goblin dynamite on the guards’ warehouse. He gives Katia the detonator and tells her to trigger it if he orders her to or if he and Donut die. Inside, hundreds of guards stand motionless while their energy flows toward a glowing soul crystal in the ceiling.

Mordecai identifies Remex as a Borough Boss and warns that liches rely on minions to protect themselves. Carl and Donut climb to the second floor, expecting a powerful necromancer, but find something trembling in the corner.

Chapter 24

Remex is not a lich. He is a Soul Leech Capacitor, a zombified, featherless skyfowl connected by a golden thread to an amber Soul Amplifier. Antennae on the warehouse roof collect energy from nearby deaths, store it in the crystal, and use it to recharge the guards each night.

Remex reveals Miss Quill’s plan in broken fragments. She belonged to the skyfowl royal family and intended to reclaim the Over City with an ancient three-part spell called The Final War. She needed an army and an enormous supply of soul energy. Featherfall gave her legitimacy, the city elves served as her cult, and the krasue became flying lieutenants. Women were lured with promises of work at the Desperado Club and transformed. Those who died during the process were dropped into the streets, while every death fed more power into Remex.

Their interference destabilizes the ancient spell and triggers the group quest The Fools Who Broke the Glass. Every crawler within forty-five square kilometers is forced into the quest, safe rooms close, and an explosion will kill every outdoor NPC, mob, and Neighborhood Boss in the area. They have seven minutes to find shelter.

Carl examines the charred display box. It is a nearly indestructible Sheol Glass Reaper Case from the fifteenth floor, though opening it carries a small chance of releasing Sheol Fire. He closes the case around the Soul Amplifier, but the system will not allow him to store it. With no time to reach the Desperado Club, Carl sits down and holds Donut as the countdown ends.

Chapter 25

The case does not contain the explosion. It absorbs and redirects it, firing beams of light through the warehouse and striking Remex. The case then changes into Carl’s Doomsday Scenario, an unstable custom explosive powerful enough to destroy a city. It is safe only while stored in Carl’s inventory. If he removes it, he will have less than a second before it detonates.

The AI announces that Carl absorbed only the physical blast. A larger magical explosion will follow in twenty minutes, preceded by several pulses. The first removes equipment bonuses, the next activates magical weapons, and the third destroys equipped armor. The final pulse will release unpredictable wild magic. Mordecai orders every crawler in the quest chat to strip off magical gear and store it. Carl removes everything, but Donut’s Sepsis Crown is destroyed before she can put it away.

They race toward the stairwell. Carl leaves Katia at the entrance with the detonator and tells her when to trigger the dynamite at the warehouse. With fifteen seconds remaining, she presses it, and the group descends to the fourth floor. Only then does Donut point out that Carl never put his underwear back on and that they are heading directly to Odette’s show.

Epilogue

In the green room for Odette’s Oddities, Carl makes a loincloth from toilet paper. During the interview, Odette explains that the magical pulse should have disabled Katia’s detonator. Borant challenged the result, but the court ruled that Carl’s achievements and the Celestial Quest Boxes awarded to every participant were valid. Borant then used its one seasonal veto to reverse the ruling. Only Quan Ch, who opened his box before the veto, keeps the reward. Carl and Donut receive nothing beyond the levels they gained.

The new leaderboard places Lucia Mar first, Hekla second, Carl sixth, and Donut seventh. The final name is Elle McGib, the Frost Maiden Blizzardmancer formerly known as Mrs. McGibbons, the wheelchair-bound dementia patient Carl rescued from Meadow Lark on the first floor.

Odette privately warns Carl that Hekla wants Donut in her party so she can gain permanent access to Mordecai, and that Katia may be her way in. She also explains that Carl’s gauntlet could accidentally summon the war god Grull if used against one of his worshippers, who will begin appearing on the fourth floor. The Skull Empire has purchased a deity sponsorship, and Odette suspects Grull is their chosen god.

After Odette leaves, Carl waits alone in the empty green room as the fourth floor prepares to open.
