Dragonsteel has released two more free chapters of Brandon Sanderson’s The Fires of December. The September 25 update adds chapters three and four as a PDF and audiobook sample. You can now read or listen to the first four chapters for free.
The new sample continues December’s journey up the River Violet. You can download chapters three and four or listen on Sanderson’s YouTube channel. If you haven’t started yet, the chapters one and two PDF and first audiobook sample remain available.
We praised the opening in our spoiler-free review of The Fires of December. That first chapter follows December over many years, giving her story a darker, almost fairy-tale quality. Hoid’s voice becomes more conversational after that. According to Dragonsteel’s original preview announcement, Sanderson wrote the first chapter in one sitting.
Hoid narrates this standalone Cosmere novel, which follows a young woman trying to warn a royal court about a coming plague. December travels along a river of demon blood, with a priestess and an aspiring fashion designer joining her.
The ebook and audiobook arrive on December 8, 2026. You can preorder that edition on Amazon.
