Brandon Sanderson’s The Fires of December now has a free two-chapter preview as a PDF and audiobook. You can download chapters one and two as a free PDF or listen to the same chapters on Sanderson’s YouTube channel.
Our spoiler-free review of The Fires of December singled out the first chapter as one of Sanderson’s best. Dragonsteel’s announcement adds that Sanderson wrote that chapter in a single sitting. The review describes an opening that follows December through years of her life, with a darker, storybook tone before Hoid’s more conversational narration takes over.
The Fires of December is a standalone Cosmere story narrated by Hoid. It follows December, a young woman who sets out to warn a king’s court of an approaching plague by traveling up a river of demon blood.
For readers considering this as their first Cosmere book, our review found that December’s story works on its own. Some passages lean heavily on terminology from the wider universe, so newcomers may be a little confused at times. However, the central story does not require any knowledge from the previous Cosmere novels.
Preorders for The Fires of December is now available on Amazon. It’s scheduled release is set for December 8, 2026.
