Floor 5
The Bubbles is the fifth floor of the World Dungeon. Its 1,172 enclosed worlds each contain four castles, and crawlers must conquer all four in their bubble before they can use its stairs. Carl, Donut and Katia begin in Bubble 543, where the castles’ machinery and defenses connect the fate of one region to the others.[1]

Rules and navigation
Each bubble has Air, Land, Water and Subterranean quadrants. Conquering a castle lets crawlers from its quadrant enter the other three. All four castles must fall before anyone can use the stairs.[2]

Geography
Bubble 543 has a high central landform surrounded by rings. The overhead diagram places the Sea outside Land, with the Tomb around the center and Air in the central bowl. All four regions belong to the same enclosed world.
From the side, the Air quadrant is a desert bowl atop a tall, tapered tower containing the Subterranean tomb. Land slopes down toward the surrounding Sea, all beneath one dome. Carl begins in the bowl with the airship and castle suspended above him.
Other bubbles have their own landscapes. Within Bubble 543, invisible barriers restrict travel even where the regions touch.[3]

Dungeon systems
Carl’s party starts in the Air quadrant, beneath artificial lights and local weather. They can talk to allies in other regions before they are allowed to reach them.[4]

Enemies and hazards
Castle battles trigger floods and collapses, while predators threaten crawlers swept into the ocean. The Gate later releases Orthrus, an enormous two-headed puppy who needs the party’s help to survive.[5]

The Gate of the Feral Gods
Bubble 543
The floor has a fifteen-day deadline. Carl, Donut and Katia arrive in Bubble 543’s Air quadrant, separated from allies in other quadrants and other bubbles. They can still communicate with people they cannot reach.
Each bubble is a self-contained world. Bubble 543 has its own artificial lights, weather and landscape, including Hump Town and the castle floating overhead. Other bubbles have different settings. Invisible boundaries restrict travel between quadrants even when the party can see or map what lies beyond them.[4]
Castles, borders and stairs
A castle is conquered when a crawler occupies its throne room or kills its quadrant boss. This lets crawlers who started in that quadrant enter the other three. The stairs remain locked until all four castles are conquered.
The barriers stop held tools, spells and controlled summons, but thrown objects can cross them. Carl has to work around these limits whenever someone or something he needs is on the other side.
Water’s crawlers gain permission to travel before Carl’s Air group. Conquering the Air castle frees his party to move but still leaves two castles to take. Once all four fall, Bubble 543 pops and its stairs open. Crawlers can then travel into other popped bubbles, though intact ones remain closed.[2]
Hump Town, the airship and the falling castle
Destroying the main airship sends wreckage into the world below but leaves the Air castle floating. The party still has to reach its commandant’s quarters or defeat the boss to win the quadrant.
The castle’s huge balloon carries it toward the floor’s ceiling. Occupying the commandant’s quarters liberates Air, and the house comes down, though its balloon can refill. Katia later takes the house into Land after detaching its stairwell, which remains guarded near the landing site.[6]
Water, Land and the crypt are connected
Morris reports that conquering Water seals the Subterranean exits and starts a flood. Some walls have changed since the map was made, leaving the party with unreliable directions. The drainage system and submarine pump connect these regions, so an action in one can endanger crawlers in another.
Liberating Land does not stop the destruction. Castle and necropolis debris washes into the ocean, and crawlers face currents, falling wreckage and predators. The Land staircase is buried when its castle collapses and has to be dug out.[7]
Orthrus and Emberus
Carl uses the Gate of the Feral Gods to get himself, Katia and Tran out of the ocean after escaping the Octo-Shark. Their rescue releases Orthrus into Bubble 543. The enormous two-headed puppy belonged to Geryun, Emberus’s dead son, and is far too large for the world in which he has arrived.
Emberus searches the opened bubbles for Orthrus. Intact barriers appear to hide their contents from him. Bubble 543 loses its upper barrier when the last castle falls, while the lower surface continues holding its water. Carl’s group must keep Orthrus safe from lightning and sharks until they can reunite him with Emberus.[8]
Rescue after the conquests
After Emberus and Orthrus leave, Carl, Katia, Imani and Elle organize a rescue relay. Shared Desperado Club rooms let a representative collect the Gate, return to their own bubble and open a portal to Hump Town. Their group gathers its remaining survivors in one quadrant, sends everyone through, then hands the Gate to the next representative. Groups without shared-club access need another way out.
The party discovers that a detached stairwell platform can be stored in inventory and moved. At Hump Town, they escort arrivals from the portal to a staircase, turning the settlement into an evacuation point for the floor.
Each use of the Gate releases a feral god into the bubble being evacuated, leaving its NPCs to face the consequences. Some arrivals also draw regular gods. The administrators eventually reduce the chance of these additional appearances, but the rescue still puts the people left behind in danger.
The relay saves roughly 1,500 crawlers, with more rescued afterward. A separate Gate operation takes Juice Box’s surviving changelings and other rescued NPCs to Floor Six. Their crawler escorts use the stairs: skipping a floor through a portal would reset their levels.[9]

Book 5
The Butcher’s Masquerade
The next floor changes the rules again
Floor Six returns to a connected landscape of jungle and settlements. The Bubbles’ travel restrictions end with Floor Five, and former teammates can still meet through shared rooms even when their new parties arrive far apart.[10]
