The Butcher’s Masquerade
The Butcher’s Masquerade is a compulsory gathering at Queen Imogen’s castle on the sixth floor. Crawlers and hunters attend in separate ballrooms for prizes, contests and performances. A divine truce prevents violence, while the castle’s security controls restrict what guests can carry and cast.[1]

Attendance
The top-ranked crawlers receive invitations and plus-one tokens. Attendance later becomes compulsory, and a token remains valid only while its issuer qualifies.[1]

Venue
The printed map puts crawlers on the fourth floor and hunters on the second, with the security controls between them on the third.[1]

Prize currency
Hunter-kill trophies can be exchanged for prizes at the party. Their ownership rules prevent crawlers from simply pooling them like gold.[1]

The Butcher’s Masquerade
An invitation becomes an obligation
The first announcement invites the top fifty crawlers, their plus-ones, hunters and celebrities to a party with contests, performances and prizes. A later announcement makes attendance mandatory for the top fifty. Plus-one tokens can be transferred, but become invalid if the issuing crawler falls out of the ranking.
When Britney enters the top fifty herself, the guest token Donut had held for her is withdrawn. Performers and attendants enter through different arrangements. NPCs and pets can assist in the talent contest under its rules, but NPCs cannot enter the pageant. These roles determine access to the castle’s rooms and supplies.[2]
Hunter trophies and prizes
Carl’s early Hunter-Killer Boxes contain body-part trophies as well as gold. Donut receives a trophy for her own kill. They can redeem these at the Masquerade counter, where the cheapest prize costs one hand.
The trophies cannot be freely passed around. Transferring ownership sends a body part back to its original owner’s body, preventing a crawler from handing its spending value to an ally.[3]
The printed map changes the practical rules
Production first promises separate protected ballrooms with no attacks, magic, weapons or traps, while saying inventories will remain accessible. The printed Goodwill Ballroom Map later prohibits inventory use too. It places Imogen on seven, crawlers on four, security on three, hunters on two and attendants on one. Carl plans around the stricter printed rules.
Theobold warns that guards can attack protected guests who are unable to fight back. Imogen says her own rite prevents her from striking a guest before the party. On entry, the system confirms that nobody can leave until the event ends or its seal breaks. Carl takes protective consumables in advance because he will lose inventory access inside.[4]
One performance appears in several physical rooms
The stages appear together through projections, but performers can only touch physical props in their own rooms. Four small crystals govern the two main ballrooms and two attendant rooms, while a larger crystal controls the shared overlay. Carl’s group plans to reach third-floor security, restore crawler magic and inventory access, and keep the projection running for the performance.
Samantha removes the crawler-side crystals, restoring access without raising an alert because Britney has darkened the signal. The hunters’ crystals are already out and the main overlay crystal is missing, leaving the projection running on stored power. Carl suspects Diwata has sabotaged security first. He orders Samantha to replace the hunter-side crystals, restricting them while leaving the crawlers free to act.[5]
Imogen describes a divine rite with an uncertain reward
Imogen describes the party as a once-per-lifetime rite for divine daughters. Apito chooses the guests, the host must maintain peace and a successful celebration earns a boon. She warns that the first side to break the truce will be taken into the Nothing. Carl decides against an immediate attack inside the sealed rooms.
Signet thinks the boon might be immortality, but knows of no completed rite. Chaco identifies the hundred-hand prize as Imogen’s Memorial Crystal and says the host must offer her most valued possession. He does not know who made the crystal or what memories it holds. Carl wants it, but cannot yet redeem it.[6]
Signet’s attack breaks the seal
Imogen’s arrival seals the gathering. Samantha’s explosion damages the castle without breaking that seal. Carl considers killing someone to end the truce but does not act. Signet instead performs the Marauder working on herself, cutting her throat and using her blood to strike Imogen.
The system declares the Masquerade failed and ends its protections. The Nothing claims Signet, while Chaco and the judges disappear. Her tattoo memories become independent beings as fighting begins, preserving pieces of her companions without restoring the original people.[7]
The prize and the survivors do not leave together
The Sledge’s Zerzura spell transfers the castle, changelings and other inhabitants to the ninth floor. Crawlers and hunters remain behind, where the AI forces a four-team cage fight involving Imogen and Diwata. Imogen dies in the battle.
Osvaldo takes Imogen’s still-unredeemed Memorial Crystal after her death. Prepotente disputes the battle credit but does not receive the crystal then. He later identifies it as Apito’s. Imogen never receives the promised boon from her failed celebration.[8]
