Kit Harington has been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2 of HBO’s Harry Potter series, replacing Nicholas Hoult shortly after Hoult’s involvement was first reported.
Deadline first reported the change, and Kit Harington’s Instagram account followed by confirming his casting.
The move brings the former Game of Thrones star back to a major HBO fantasy franchise, although this will not be his first time playing Lockhart.
Kit Harington has already played Gilderoy Lockhart
Harington voiced Professor Lockhart in the new full-cast audiobook edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which was released through Audible in December 2025.
The connection makes his casting particularly fitting. He has already developed a performance for the vain celebrity author, and listeners have had the opportunity to hear his version of the character months before he steps onto the live-action set.
Harington also made it clear last year that he wanted to join HBO’s adaptation. While promoting the audiobook, he told Variety that he would accept any part in the series.
“I’ll be a background extra, I don’t care,” Harington said. “I would love to be in that.”
Instead, he has landed one of the largest new roles in the second season.
Why Nicholas Hoult left Harry Potter Season 2
Hoult was originally expected to play Lockhart, with his casting reported only days before Harington was announced as his replacement.
According to Deadline, the production had been working around two of Hoult’s existing projects. When the filming schedule for Lockhart’s scenes shifted, the commitments could no longer be reconciled and Hoult was released from the role. Harington was available and reportedly eager to take over.
People reports that one of Hoult’s major upcoming commitments is his return as Lex Luthor in Superman: Man of Tomorrow.
Who is Gilderoy Lockhart?
Gilderoy Lockhart is introduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as Hogwarts’ new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.
Lockhart arrives at the school as a famous author and supposed adventurer whose books describe his many encounters with dangerous magical creatures. He is charming, immaculately presented, and obsessed with his own fame. He is also far less capable than his reputation suggests.
His true talent is Memory Charms. Lockhart built his career by taking credit for other witches’ and wizards’ accomplishments, then erasing their memories so they could not expose him.
The character becomes increasingly important as the mystery of the Chamber of Secrets unfolds. Kenneth Branagh played Lockhart in the 2002 film adaptation, giving Harington one of the series’ most comedic adult roles to reinterpret.
Harry Potter Season 2 begins filming this fall
HBO renewed Harry Potter for a second season in May, months before the first season’s scheduled premiere. Season 2 will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and is expected to begin production in fall 2026.
The early renewal allows the production to move forward while post-production continues on Season 1. It also helps HBO limit the amount of time between seasons while its young cast members grow into their roles.
The first season is scheduled to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on December 25, 2026.
