Introduction
Samantha is a talking doll head Carl recovers from the glass castle on Floor Five. She contains the Withering Spirit of Psamathe, a banished minor deity separated from the rest of her body. Carl brings her into the party’s personal space, where her knowledge of the gods proves useful and her demands for a new body become a regular part of their lives.[1]
Appearance and Personality
When the castle’s crystallization ends, the object Carl collected becomes a speaking latex Lika Love Doll Head and is expelled from his inventory. Its occupant is Psamathe, despite Ghazi’s belief that the statue held Lika herself. Mordecai calls Samantha a withering spirit: part of a soul unable to reunite with its other pieces.
Samantha speaks as someone accustomed to royal and divine company, even while relying on friends to carry her. She fears the Nothing and persistently asks Carl to find her a body.[2]
She learns to roll and bite but still gets stuck, swallowed and lost during scouting trips. Her enthusiasm often outruns her attention to instructions. During the masquerade, she forgets her route and throws away a potion ball because it rattles.[3]
The prospect of a body repeatedly secures her help. When one finally becomes available, however, she lets its organs be used to save Louis, choosing him over her own restoration.[4]

Attributes and Abilities
Samantha remembers people and events from divine history, including Orthrus’s destruction of a country. Her knowledge gives the party valuable leads, though Mordecai warns that she no longer has unrestricted divine power. Her soft doll vessel initially limits the harm she can do directly.
Hiring her as staff gives Samantha chat access and a permanent place in the personal space. Carl’s xistera lets him launch and recall her for scouting or distractions. Anything holding or containing her can come back too, as the party discovers at Fort Freedom.[2]
Mordecai says Samantha has one hit point but extraordinary durability. She survives poison artillery, enemy fire and the masquerade’s security-crystal explosion, making her useful for missions too dangerous for ordinary scouts.
Her strength and bite improve as the floor continues. With no clear progression display, Carl often learns what she can do only after she has done it.[5]
Samantha can affect passages to the Nothing that Carl expects to work in only one direction. Her presence helps Minge enter the casino, turning a planned distraction into a disaster.
She sometimes amplifies others’ magic. Her intervention expands Carl’s recall spell to transport a whole charmed group and break Ines’s control. The results are unreliable, and she cannot simply teleport the party herself; one journey she boasts about actually involved a train. Carl and Donut suspect deaths and romantic rejection contribute to her growth.[6]
By Floor Ten, Samantha can float at Carl’s eye level. Grigori suggests moving her into a compatible fresh corpse, though they have yet to arrange the transfer.[7]

History
Book 4
The Gate of the Feral Gods
Released from the castle
Carl collects the broken head while the castle is crystallized. When the spell ends, his inventory rejects the newly active spirit vessel. Samantha and the interface identify her as a banished deity who entered a doll and became separated from its body. Mordecai thinks the crystallization interrupted an attempt to enter Quetzalcoatlus, while Mongo’s damage to the doll divided her further.
Samantha senses that her ooze child is alive. She asks for a body and offers information about the naiads on the next floor. Carl lets her stay in the training room.[1]
Staff member and divine lure
She recognizes Orthrus and recounts his earlier destruction of a country. Carl later hires her as staff and uses her in a diversion outside the castle. The god she identifies as her mother arrives and kills Slit, creating enemies who will seek revenge.[8]

Book 5
The Butcher’s Masquerade
Signet and Fort Freedom
Samantha asks to meet Signet in the hope that the naiad princess can give her a body. While waiting, she helps defend Point Mongo. Carl throws her toward the poison-artillery attackers and recalls her after one dies and another is incapacitated, finding her attached to the survivor’s ankle.
Signet calls Samantha her cousin but delays restoration until her campaigns are finished. At Fort Freedom, Carl launches Samantha into the river as a distraction, with her attached device playing the wrong music. She enters the fortress, reports its condition and is swallowed by Claude Sludgington. Recalling her brings the enormous boss and an unconscious Holger onto the bank.
Afterward, she returns with a feather far larger than Mongo’s or Kiwi’s, helping identify Big Tina as the dinosaur attacking travelers.[9]
A scout under pressure
At Alucarda, Samantha gives the hunters slightly wrong information about Carl’s return point, but a dryad corrects her. She warns Carl that enemies await him both outside and inside the safe room. Later she recognizes the masquerade’s mirrored ballrooms from royal security arrangements and draws anti-air fire so Carl’s decoys can destroy the weapon.[10]
The security-crystal operation
Initially assigned to Donut’s props, Samantha volunteers to infiltrate security after discovering Carl’s plan. Firas guides her when she loses her way. The guards are already dead when she arrives, and she has thrown away the sleep-potion ball she was meant to use.
She changes the security crystal, restoring restrictions on hunters while keeping crawler access. Confronting Diwata, she bites the stolen crystal and causes a huge explosion. The rupture approaches the Nothing, but Signet’s later sacrifice breaks the divine seal. Samantha survives and returns during the fight with Vrah. Carl saves the unfinished Lunette body for her.[11]

Book 6
The Eye of the Bedlam Bride
Shi Maria’s promised help
Samantha returns healed after escaping the brambles, surprising Mordecai. She seeks a Pulpmancer, then meets Shi Maria in the southern swamp. The demigoddess swallows her and later leaves her caught in a web.
When Carl’s party arrives, Samantha introduces Shi Maria as a friend who can restore her. She has taught her the card rules and hopes they will travel together. The transfer needs deeper-floor supplies, however, and a specialist in Larracos remains another possibility. Carl reassures Samantha that she is part of the group even without a new body.[12]
The casino catastrophe
Carl brings her to the Desperado Club to distract the bartender while he prepares to attack Astrid. Instead, her presence helps Minge emerge from the Nothing to avenge Slit’s death at her mother’s hands.
Minge crushes guards and tears apart Charles, the badger bartender Samantha has grown attached to. She lashes out while Carl tries to escape. Releasing the Vorpals distracts the demon long enough for survivors to flee through the devastated club.[13]
Amplification and the divine battle
In Cuba, Samantha touches Ines and amplifies Carl’s return spell. It transports the charmed group and breaks Ines’s control. Carl hopes to repeat it for friends without keys, but Samantha cannot reliably reproduce the effect or teleport them independently.
Samantha helps again during the final magical confrontation. Ysalte calls her Psamathe and asks about a daughter, raising more questions about her past. Samantha carries Carl’s prepared return destination and later falls with him when Amayon refuses protection. Before they descend, she tells Carl she is abandoning her pursuit of him and returning to her king.[14]

Book 7
This Inevitable Ruin
A place in the war
Samantha argues with Tish about Ghazi and keeps searching for a body. Theia is identified as her mother. During the naga attack, she opens the private temple door with her mouth; a later military promotion lets her designate a dragon as a missile target.[15]
The body and Louis
Juice Box promises Samantha a body for helping rescue Louis. She gets through castle defenses and removes the explosive component from one security dog. The others remain dangerous. An experimental changeling involved in the rescue is destroyed, and Samantha believes it was her child.
When Louis needs new heart and lungs, Samantha gives up those organs from her intended body. Saving him means postponing the restoration she has wanted for so long.[16]
Buying time at the stairs
As the floor ends, she agrees to meet Emberus, keeping the xistera as her way back. She returns alive but charred. She also recognizes Kimaris as an old friend, though gaps remain in her memory.[17]

Book 8
A Parade of Horribles
Old enemies and another possible vessel
The Cabaret proposal renews Carl’s questions about Samantha’s daughter and the divine conflict. Olga recognizes her as Helado’s killer, and his loss makes Quemada harder to calm.
Samantha can now float at eye level. She recognizes Chachi and warns Carl about Chachi’s treatment of children. Grigori offers the possibility of a fresh, compatible corpse, but no transfer takes place.[18]
Leaving with Taranis
Samantha whispers to Taranis and leaves with him and Krakaren. She later tells Louis they need a missing piece to restore a divine woman, first calling her Taranis’s mother and then his wife. Samantha claims a demon son tricked her into bearing a monster that threatens creation and vows revenge on him and his mother. The identities and full history behind her account remain unresolved.[19]
