At a glance
Frank gives Carl the Enchanted Night Wyrm’s Ring of Divine Suffering in the Iron Tangle. It adds five percent to his stats while worn and grants Marked for Death, an ability that trades the right to heal for permanent stat gains.[2]

What it does
A marked target’s death can grant the wearer permanent stat gains even when someone else makes the kill. The item description describes increasing rewards for successive groups of marks.[3]

Limits and costs
While an active mark remains alive, the wearer cannot heal injuries or poisoning. A powerful target can turn the promised permanent reward into a long period of vulnerability.[3]

History
Book 3
The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook
Frank gives Carl a ring he expects to corrupt him
Frank says it came from a Legendary reward for killing family. He gives it to Carl as revenge, expecting it to corrupt him. His account of Maggie and Yvette describes how its healing restriction turned a family crisis fatal, though Carl cannot independently verify the full history.
Carl equips it for the five-percent bonus. Even after taking it off, he is tempted to put it back on, insisting that he will never use Marked for Death. The passive benefit does not require a marked kill.[2]
Marked for Death trades healing for permanent growth
The inspected description requires an eligible, full-health target within map range and normally takes thirty seconds to form a mark. When that target dies by any cause, the wearer gets a permanent stat point. The stated award rises after every three completed marks. Until the target dies, the wearer cannot heal injuries or poisoning. A target who escapes can leave the wearer trapped with worsening wounds.
Rules for eligible targets, formation time, cooldown and simultaneous marks change by floor. The displayed fourth-floor version allows one mark with a five-hour cooldown. Every third floor has special conditions, including broader eligibility.[3]
Mordecai makes Carl remove it
Mordecai warns that Faction Wars participants can grow stronger by exploiting crawlers with equipment like this. A magical trap might also trigger a power Carl meant to leave unused. He insists Carl remove the ring, and Carl loses its passive bonus. He does not complete any marks in Book Three.[4]

Book 5
The Butcher’s Masquerade
Carl activates his copy in the hunter zone
In the sixth-floor hunter zone, Carl puts it on and marks Chin’Dua. Marks form instantly here and have no cooldown. Left to Fester blocks Carl’s healing. He spreads the debuff to Xindy with a different toe ring, but killing her does not free him: Chin’Dua is the marked target.
Chin’Dua’s death gives Carl one Dexterity, and the next mark is said to be worth two. A Gold Junkie reward warns of hidden side effects. A separate reward counts the NPCs killed in Carl’s attack; they are not all marked victims, and the ring cannot be assumed to explain every part of his distress.[5]
Bravvo, Alkand and the uneven early counter
Signet brings the captive Bravvo to Carl and challenges him to kill the hunter. Carl equips the ring, and Bravvo’s death gives one Dexterity with two promised next time. Later, Carl marks and executes Alkand for one Constitution, again with a notice that the next kill will give two. His anger and the execution frighten Donut.
These three early deaths each show a one-point award followed by a promised two-point reward. That does not form a clear sequence under the earlier groups-of-three description. No reset or rule change is explained. The later rewards also identify the target’s highest stat, whereas the original description phrases stat selection differently.[6]
The payouts rise during the hunter campaign
Three Nebular hunters give Carl seven Intelligence in total. They are described as injured, despite the earlier full-health requirement; the difference is unexplained. Iota later gives three Intelligence before the next award rises to four. Three more hunter deaths then add twelve Constitution, with five promised next. The story gives these checkpoints rather than a complete mark-by-mark ledger.
After Signet breaks the masquerade’s protection, Carl marks Vrah. Mongo and Kiwi kill her, but Carl still receives Dexterity because the marked target has died. He removes the ring to avoid another healing lock during the battle.[7]
Prepotente’s separate ring and the two marks on Miriam
Prepotente accidentally marks Miriam with his own ring while petrified. At one health, he cannot recover while she lives. Carl marks her separately and selects Intelligence but refuses to kill her. She dies at dawn when her protection from sunlight fails. Carl gets three Intelligence, and Prepotente can heal again.
Grieving, Prepotente removes and swallows his ring. Mordecai cannot say exactly what that does, so its destruction is not confirmed. Both crawlers marked Miriam on this floor. The later ninth-floor rule against two crawlers marking the same target should not be treated as applying here retroactively.[8]

Book 6
The Eye of the Bedlam Bride
The Guild recognizes the ring, but it is a different thing
Carl’s ring qualifies him for temporary Guild of Suffering quest access. Damascus Steel later recognizes his ring tattoo and takes him into the guild through a hidden route. The tattoo, the guild and the physical ring are connected but distinct. Access alone does not complete the assassination quest.[9]
Carl rejects an easy gain from dying allies
After Quan dies, Carl considers marking Ren or Khulan and decides against it. He says the thirty-second formation would betray his intention. He also anticipates being able to mark up to a hundred targets on the next floor. That is a future allowance, not marks he has already placed. Quan’s cursed protective ring is separate equipment.[10]

Book 7
This Inevitable Ruin
D’Nadia’s death pays Carl although Mongo kills her
Carl strips D’nadia’s defenses and heals her enough to mark her. Mongo kills her, earning the death credit, while Carl gets five Intelligence. Carl later marks the captive Rishi, whose highest stat is Dexterity. That scene does not show a separate payout.[11]
King Rust’s copy passes through Carl to Li Na
Tipid attributes some of King Rust’s growth to Divine Suffering equipment and some to the separate Indelible Woe necklace. Carl takes Rust’s ring after his death, keeping it alongside his own. Under the rules he checks, he can wear only one, and two crawlers cannot mark the same target.
Li Na asks for Rust’s ring. Carl refuses at first, then agrees when Donut asks him to trust her. Li Na turns down Indelible Woe, leaving the necklace with Carl. Carl keeps the ring Frank gave him.[12]
Li Na’s marks bring power and an unresolved healing lock
After Li Na’s chain lattice kills the trapped enemies, she reaches 300 in every base stat. The scene does not attribute every point solely to the ring. Marked targets Tagg and Fang escape, preventing her from healing. Their later deaths do not resolve all her outstanding marks.
Prepotente reports that three of eighteen marked outsiders from Rust’s coerced harem survived and reached Floor Eighteen through the Cosmic Lounge. Li Na cannot reach them, leaving her unable to heal normally despite her enormous stats.[13]
Carl surrenders his own copy
Carl refuses to execute captive mercenaries just to gain stats. He gives his own ring to Donut, who eats it. No immediate numerical reward or way to recover it is shown. Li Na’s separate ring and marks remain unaffected.[14]

Book 8
A Parade of Horribles
The AI criticizes Carl’s choice without reversing it
The AI gives Carl the Wastrel achievement for letting Donut eat the ring, mocks him and awards nothing. He has not recovered it or received a replacement.[15]
Li Na seeks a route around the persistent condition
Li Na still has Left to Fester after the ninth floor. Descending can refill health while making this poison worse, so another floor is not a cure. Carl and Rosetta hope the separate Pineapple Cabaret could halt its progress and an eventual surface exit could cure it. Neither is confirmed when they propose the route.
Li Na volunteers for the cleaner transfer. Her cactus later grows the single flower agreed as confirmation that she reached the Cabaret and approves the route. It does not confirm that she reached the surface, fully recovered or disposed of her ring.[16]
