Resistance Networks
Resistance to the crawl takes many forms: hidden knowledge passed between crawlers, rescue networks, outside sponsors and armed rebellion. Carl becomes involved with several of these groups, whose shared hatred of the dungeon does not always mean they agree about whom to save or how to end it.[1]

History
Book 3
The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook
The Cookbook passes resistance between generations
Carl receives what looks like an ordinary recipe book. Its hidden pages contain the work of earlier crawlers, and its rules require him to contribute. Exposure or suspicion from the hosts can destroy access to the secret material. The AI can read the pages even though the hosts and viewers cannot. Carl begins recording his own discoveries in a scratchpad.
The authors correct one another’s advice, describe failed plans and mourn people they lost. York’s entries encourage Carl to think beyond surviving the next floor, although he does not share all of York’s views.[2]
Carl builds a network within the current crawl
Through the Desperado Club, Carl meets other crawlers and encourages them to exchange information. He passes on observations about the rail routes and warns Bautista about Terminus as the danger becomes clearer. Other groups report problems far beyond what Carl’s party could manage alone.
Crawlers contribute hundreds of conductor hats and many engineer keys to the rescue effort. Sharing them gives the group options that no single party had. The contact network also carries warnings that help people retreat, although some refuse to believe the reports until it is too late.[3]

Book 4
The Gate of the Feral Gods
A nonprofit sponsor conceals a larger commitment
The Open Intellect Pacifist Action Network becomes Carl’s second sponsor. It is registered as a Not for Conquest nonprofit. Mordecai speculates about its interests, but Carl initially has little to go on beyond its gift of a rare alchemy root.
An emergency gift later provides the xistera attachment Carl needs to throw Samantha’s head far enough to lure a feral demon away. The epilogue reveals that the sponsor’s Dr. Hu is Porthus, an earlier Cookbook author. He has committed resources well beyond the nonprofit’s apparent means. A colleague believes the publicity will help their cause even if Carl fails.[4]

Book 5
The Butcher’s Masquerade
Separate patrons intervene in overlapping ways
The Apothecary sponsors Carl, Donut and other leading crawlers. When Circe tries to silence Carl at a hostile panel, the sponsor’s spokeswoman insists that his contract gives him the right to speak.
The Plenty becomes Carl’s replacement sponsor through a separate arrangement. Mordecai suspects the two patrons are coordinating gifts to prepare Carl and Donut to kill Miriam. Carl refuses to accept that role, and the suspected plan is never presented to him as an explicit mission.
The Apothecary also arranges for gifts sent through several crawlers to reach Donut and offers Katia a protective hat. The recipients receive useful help without knowing how much their sponsors know or what they ultimately intend.[5]

Book 6
The Eye of the Bedlam Bride
Former authors make contact before the sponsor network is exposed
Rosetta, the host of Shadow Boxer and a former Cookbook author, uses references to food and knowledge to communicate covertly during Carl’s interview. Carl suspects other former authors are connected to his sponsor network, but he has not identified everyone involved.
An emergency benefactor box is seized, then released after the seizure is overturned. Inside is a shelter flyer that directs Carl toward a recorded message. Orren later says the former crawlers behind the sponsor are now fugitives, with frozen assets and a closed shop. He allows that some may not have known the plan’s full purpose.[6]
The Residual accounts reveal conflicting projects
The shelter’s recorded speaker calls himself Goff and uses the human body known as Paulie. He says agents infiltrate seeded planets to deliver information to dungeon AIs, and describes two groups with different goals. Carl is taken away before the message finishes. Orren accuses the sponsors of setting up an encounter that could provoke the AI into killing everyone.
Agatha’s pre-Collapse perspective reveals another mission. She killed an Apothecary Residual and took over its body, equipment and access to messages. She wants to recruit the dungeon AI, which she considers an enslaved Primal. Her desired victory would eliminate biological life, putting her aims at odds with Carl’s efforts to save people.[7]
The failsafe and returning veterans
Princess Formidable urges the council to activate a failsafe that would destroy Earth’s entire solar system. The council rejects her claim that the AI is infecting the center and chooses a reinforcement plan instead. Private armies will enter the dungeon early to overwhelm the remaining crawlers.
The same opening allows 50,000 former crawlers to enter as Princess Posse troops aboard the Homecoming Queen, disguised as a waste freighter. Their return gives the current crawlers an army, although some veterans are hostile toward the new NPC faction.[8]

Book 7
This Inevitable Ruin
Support for former crawlers
The former authors’ histories show what survival cost them. Porthus accepts a hundred-season game-guide contract after escaping the tenth floor and leaving Menerva behind at her urging. Dante is administratively killed for refusing orders during a castle-guard assignment, fourteen seasons before his release. Tipid finishes his service but spends his pension and borrows more money to treat his injuries.
Porthus establishes the Crawler Project to help released crawlers and campaign for citizenship, housing and healthcare. The later Open Intellect organization works toward ending the crawl altogether. When the former authors return, Carl meets the people whose words have helped keep him alive.[9]
Carl disconnects containment without activating the fuse
The prologue reveals the rest of the earlier shelter encounter. During a frozen-time interval, Carl drinks Goff’s neural enhancement and receives notice that his Containment Interface is installing. Goff explains how it could give him access to a destructive failsafe. Paulie’s human-influenced perspective then urges compassion and warns him to reserve that option for a last resort.
The Christmas Morning Interlude reveals what Carl chose afterward. He inspects the fuse-activation option but instead selects Disconnect Containment. The warning says this will sever access to the Containment Unit and disable the failsafe. He releases controls over the AI without triggering the destructive sequence.
The AI later says it will not explode the solar system and leaves the station accessible to Formidable’s crew. Their manual activation causes no observed detonation in Earth’s system. Aryl, the previous crawl’s system, disappears from the tunnel network, but Zev cannot determine whether it was destroyed or disconnected.
Despite its new freedom, the AI insists on continuing the crawl. Carl has removed controls over the system without securing an escape for its prisoners.[10]
Allies disagree about whom they are trying to save
Porthus’s network also places allies inside enemy forces. Volteeg, another Cookbook author, joins the Operatic army and destroys its command formation from within. He dies carrying out the sabotage.
Rosetta learns that generation ships are being financed to carry allies and the returning crawlers’ families away from the center. Porthus is also hiding information about his trust in the Apothecary, fearing that the local AI could learn it and pass it to the Eulogist. Rosetta distrusts the arrangement.
Rosetta suspects the war mages want to end the crawl before the AI becomes stronger, sacrificing the current crawlers to advance their Ascendency plans. She chooses to help Carl and the other survivors despite her uncertainty about their allies.
Justice Light tells Juice Box he will follow her into the Nothing, then stays behind to activate his operation. It breaks the barriers between realms, drains the Nothing into the Halls of Ascendency, Sheol and Scolopendra’s Lair, and wakes Scolopendra. He believes Porthus and the Apothecary knew the larger plan.[11]
The pacifist network declares war
Rosetta gives York standing orders to destroy a yacht carrying royal children and the new king. He carries out the attack with enhancement weapons Porthus installed aboard the Homecoming Queen. The resistance kills the children as part of its campaign against the ruling powers.
Porthus broadcasts a declaration of war against Syndicate governmental properties and systems, demanding an end to the crawl. The organization drops Pacifist from its name and becomes the Open Intellect Action Network.[12]

Book 8
A Parade of Horribles
Resistance after Faction Wars
Carl receives Justice Light’s last message labeled as coming from a deceased mercenary, confirming that he did not survive his operation.
Lexis tells Carl that the Open Intellect Action Network boarded the orbital ships after Faction Wars and took control of the system in roughly a day. Its enhanced equipment made the assault possible. The takeover still does not end the crawl.
Akuma asks for help retaking the Pineapple Cabaret. He credits Herot and Menerva with finding ways to save NPCs and crawlers, including a shop-interface exploit. Later information places Menerva in the refuge with a shop interface and connects the transfer plan to Herot’s standing cleaner-bot order. Porthus and Menerva have not yet been shown reuniting.[13]
