Magic, Healing and Status Effects
Magic in the dungeon depends on more than knowing the right spell. Crawlers have to manage mana, wait through casting delays and cooldowns, and choose abilities that work on the target in front of them. Healing, physical protection and resistance to magic each solve different problems.[1]

Different clocks
A casting delay is the wait before an ability takes effect. Duration is how long it lasts, and cooldown is the wait before it can be used again.[1]
Choose Book 1 or later above to read this section.
Healing has limits
Healing can restore health without removing a disease, poison or other harmful condition.[1]
Choose Book 1 or later above to read this section.
Protection is specific
A defense against magical damage may leave its user vulnerable to physical attacks, and vice versa.[1]

History
Book 1
Dungeon Crawler Carl
Mana limits how often an ability can be used
Carl’s first Heal spell uses two of his three mana points and restores only part of his health. Donut likewise runs out of mana if she casts Magic Missile too often. Both have to ration spells or find a way to replenish their mana.
Magic Missile later lets Donut spend between three and six mana on a shot. Choosing a weaker missile allows her to keep firing for longer.[2]
Potion waiting periods are separate from spell timing
Carl can drink another potion much sooner than Donut can. Mordecai explains that her low Constitution causes the longer wait. Swallowing another before the cooldown ends can cause Poison. Healing scrolls offer an alternative and can be used on someone else without waiting for that person’s potion cooldown.
Puddle Jumper initially costs twenty mana, takes ten seconds to cast and cannot be used again for five hours. It carries Donut and up to three companions to a destination within sight. The long recharge makes choosing when to use it especially important.[3]
Shields, resistance and healing
Wisp Armor reduces magical damage and temporarily blocks mind control, but does nothing against physical attacks. Protective Shell provides the opposite kind of defense: a stationary barrier that stops physical threats while allowing magic through. Carl’s first Shell lasts twenty seconds, costs no mana and has a thirty-hour cooldown. Taking off the item that grants it does not reset the wait.
Bandages can stop Bleed, while Taint prevents healing until it expires. After the boss explosion, Donut must drag Carl out of danger and wait for Taint to end before treating him. Healing also has limits beyond temporary conditions: the Meadow Lark residents recover from illnesses without regaining their youth, strength or lost cognition.[4]
Reanimation
Donut’s Second Chance temporarily animates a dead monster of a lower level. Her first minion is weak, follows spoken commands and dies when the spell’s timer runs out. It is a temporary servant rather than a fully restored companion.
At level five, Second Chance gives Donut five minutes of control. The creature can then remain animated for about an hour without obeying her. Training also raises the level of monster she can target.[5]

Book 2
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario
Target restrictions matter even for healing
Ordinary Heal scrolls and potions do not work on Mongo, but a potion modified for pets does. Healing also leaves Poison in place unless the treatment specifically removes that condition.
Carl uses Wisp Armor to resist a parasite’s control while deliberately letting it enter his body. The spell preserves his agency without removing the organism. Protective Shell can cut through worms outside him but cannot reach those already inside.[6]
Casting time and cooldown
At level five, Puddle Jumper takes only two seconds to cast, although its cooldown remains five hours. Donut can also jump to a higher ledge without seeing the surface on top of it.
The faster cast makes the spell easier to use under pressure, but spending it still leaves the party without that escape route for hours. Donut has to weigh an immediate shortcut against the danger of needing another jump later.[7]

Book 3
The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook
A stationary barrier can create a moving hazard
Protective Shell stays fixed relative to the tracks when Carl casts it on a moving train. The train passes through the barrier, crushing hostile creatures against its surfaces. The same tactic can kill the engineers and leave the train uncontrolled.
The Shell does not move with Carl or keep him safely at its center. When it expels an enemy gripping his throat, that enemy pulls him outside too. Its long cooldown also prevents him from keeping the barrier continuously active.[8]

Book 4
The Gate of the Feral Gods
Remote spells and healing
Astral Paw gives Donut a remote paw that can move and manipulate objects. She uses it to push Leon. Its description promises stronger capabilities at higher levels, but she has to train the spell before she can use them.
Donut repeatedly heals Orthrus while lightning and sharks injure him. The healing keeps him alive long enough for the rescue, but the party still has to move him away from the source of the damage.[9]

Book 5
The Butcher’s Masquerade
Performance can be a requirement of casting
Donut’s bard abilities require her to keep performing. Standing Ovation improves Dexterity and ordinary spells, Entourage creates party doubles, and Encore heals the party and can remove several debuffs. She manages the support songs in a steady monotone; attack songs that require accurate pitch remain a problem.
Other healing encounters require specialized treatment. When ordinary healing fails to clear the effects of embedded projectiles, Miriam has to address what remains. Restoring health alone does not remove every source of injury.[10]
A spell combination depends on the actual target
Lucia uses Loop-de-Loop to place Donut in prepared traps. Donut escapes one anchoring effect by casting Hole and falling through the floor. She later combines doubles and invisibility to evade another attack.
At the masquerade, Carl realizes that Donut can target Circe, the mortal wearing divine protection. Laundry Day strips her borrowed armor and separates her from Diwata. Circe dies, while the goddess returns to the Halls of Ascendency.[11]
Prepotente’s short-lived Safe Space
Prepotente opens an emergency sponsor box inside a one-meter Safe Space that lasts three minutes. It gives him a brief protected area in which to inspect and prepare the gift.
The box contains a specialized herbicide sprayer and a recipe that only works through that device. Prepotente says he has twenty applications and prepares to attack the Creepers.[12]

Book 6
The Eye of the Bedlam Bride
New combinations and cures have specific subjects
Legionnaires of the Damned turns recently removed armor or weapons into temporary minions. Donut combines it with Laundry Day by stripping Bomo’s armor and animating the individual pieces. The spell usually destroys the equipment afterward, and enchanted items can produce unpredictable results.
Carl contracts Slug Pox during the encounter with Asojano. Repairing Yemaya’s shrine cures the village’s illness but leaves his infection in place.[13]

Book 7
This Inevitable Ruin
War rules can suspend abilities that the crawler still owns
Gloom Wraith Phase lets Carl rush through obstacles while phased. It consumes mana, has a short maximum duration and has its own cooldown. Floor restrictions can prevent him from activating it even when it is available in his abilities.
The Faction Wars Ramp-Up suppresses offensive magic and movement abilities, including Puddle Jumper, Gloom Wraith Phase, Gate transport and Wisp Armor. Ordinary shields and qualifying static traps can still work. Crawlers keep their abilities but temporarily lose access to those prohibited by the rules.[14]
Conditions and stored resources
Taking the Scavenger’s Daughter’s full reserve of souls between floors gives Carl Soul Poisoning. He empties it by using Daughter’s Kiss on an already-dead creature. This clears the reserve without requiring him to kill another living target.
The interface later reports Shi Maria repeatedly trying to activate Carl’s abilities without his permission. Mind Balance resists her attempts, protecting him from that unwanted control.[15]

Book 8
A Parade of Horribles
Different transformations preserve different kinds of control
Oozy Form turns Carl into slime so he can pass through cracks and escape danger. Its description allows indefinite use at level fifteen, but he has not yet reached that level. Donut gains Smoke Form as another escape option. Mordecai contrasts both with the more aggressive, less controllable Gloom Wraith Phase.
Donut’s stronger Astral Paw inherits her radiant claws and can cut down attackers and trees. It lasts much less time than before and has an eight-hour cooldown, trading sustained use for greater destructive power.[16]
Healing in the late crawl
Carl accidentally presses his marked palm through a reanimated camel’s rotten chest while adjusting its seat. Instead of leaving a hole, his palm repairs the flesh. Donut recognizes that he has healed it, although neither yet understands all the mark’s limits.[17]
Limits on divine protection
Inside Scolopendra, protective secretions do not stop Penelope suffocating. An anti-asphyxiation potion briefly helps, but she needs another dose before its cooldown ends. Mordecai explains that the secretions have a separate food-buff cooldown. Carl solves the breathing problem by equipping her with an item that grants Oxygenated.
Donut later uses Loop-de-Loop to swap places with Penelope, placing the pig outside near Khepri. His proximity activates Kina’s kneepads and gives Penelope ninety seconds of invulnerability. Carl’s Four-Leaf Clover patch redirects Emberus’s smite to her. She appears to be destroyed, but survives through that protection, and Taranis restores her shape. Carl has a separate temporary invulnerability effect; Donut remains vulnerable.[18]
