The Eye of the Bedlam Bride Summary

Book 6 · By Matt Dinniman · Read · Watch
Carl and Donut begin the eighth floor in a reconstruction of Havana, where recorded people go about lives that ended when Earth collapsed. The familiar world offers little comfort: their squad must capture creatures for a new competition, learning another set of rules while the dungeon surrounds them with echoes of home.
Those creatures become the basis of a card game in which building the right team matters as much as having the strongest individual monster. The Eye of the Bedlam Bride combines that tactical challenge with a more unsettling one. A dungeon able to replay the past has plenty of ways to make its contestants look back, even as Carl and Donut need to prepare for the war waiting below.

Prologue
During Mordecai’s own crawl, his party reaches a tenth-floor puzzle that must touch a storm god while charged with magic. Their manager, Odette, negotiates for help from Huanxin Jinx, the sponsor controlling Dodola. Huanxin keeps increasing her price until she demands half of Odette’s bonus. Reaching the next floor could free Odette from years of indenture, but surrendering the money would threaten the life she hopes to buy outside.
Mordecai proposes risking his life to secure the party’s escape with Final Blow. Odette secretly chooses his brother, Uzzi, instead. She pressures their companion Chaco to use the Dart of Ophiotaurus on Uzzi, threatening to abandon Chaco if Mordecai dies. She then tells Mordecai that they have found a way to save everyone and calls him back. Chaco apologizes to Uzzi, who understands and does not resist.
Chaco traps Uzzi and the charged puzzle in a Circle of Containment, which admits magic but prevents it from escaping. The dart draws Dodola into Uzzi, killing him. Lightning from Mordecai’s attack enters the circle and repeatedly strikes the trapped body before divine immunity takes hold. Huanxin has already left her sponsored form, so she survives its destruction.
The puzzle opens the stairs, and Chaco receives credit for killing a god. Mordecai attacks him, and both fall through to the next floor. Hold Steady, their surviving companion, follows. Odette gains her release, but Mordecai promises to survive long enough to kill her.
Chapter 1
Carl and Donut arrive on the eighth floor in Havana, Cuba, despite Donut believing she chose Florida. The Ghosts of Earth gives the remaining crawlers twenty-one days in a reconstruction of their home planet. Their starting building and its stairwell are locked while the new rules are announced. Other friends report their own starting regions, but the groups cannot travel between regions yet.
Skipping the seventh floor forces another immediate class choice. Donut abandons Viper Queen for Master Telephone Psychic while keeping her earlier bard abilities and Venom Spitter. Her new powers include Brain Freeze, which attacks a target with a brain, and Bad Attitude, which frightens enemies and weakens their resistance.
The world replays a recorded day on Earth. People are intangible ghosts who continue their old actions, while cars, clothes, and other objects can be moved or destroyed. The replay will reset to the following day, and items taken from this environment will disappear when the floor collapses.
Each crawler squad must capture six monsters before the second phase. Carl and Donut receive twenty flags to plant in living creatures weakened below five percent health. A successful capture turns the monster into a G’hee totem and adds it to their squad. Monsters grow more dangerous farther from the starting point, failed flags are not replaced, and other crawlers can steal the totems. Empty slots will eventually be filled at random. The captured creatures will become cards for a combat system whose full rules have not yet been announced.
Chapter 2
In the safe room, Mordecai appears as a Hills Cyclops. Bomo remains with him, while the other three bodyguards went to Floor Nine with the castle. Samantha also returns, healed after escaping the bramble. Mordecai is disturbed by abilities a withering spirit should not possess. She still wants help occupying the unfinished body of Signet’s mother.
Mordecai reports that the seventh-floor engineers recreated the fairy-tale race so faithfully that they also reproduced its weakness. Sponsors lost enormous licensing fees when Prepotente destroyed it. He suspects political maneuvering behind those losses. Carl then admits that he and Donut own a Faction Wars team. Donut welcomes the coming war; Mordecai is alarmed that Carl kept the purchase from him.
Their delayed rewards arrive. Donut improves her charm skill and receives a permanent Dexterity boost, a mercenary coupon, and a gemstone for upgrading a tiara. Carl receives a permanent Constitution boost. Her Rigor Mortis spell can reflect Simon Says, the effect that makes a victim obey a puppeteer’s movements.
Two legendary prizes could make Donut much more dangerous. A magical piercing protects against natural fire and lava and provides a brief fire berserk that attacks indiscriminately, making it unsafe near allies. Legionnaires of the Damned animates recently removed armor and weapons as temporary fighters, usually destroying the equipment afterward. Combined with Laundry Day, which strips an opponent’s equipment, it offers a way to turn that equipment against its owner.
Chapter 3
Carl opens his own rewards, including Edgar’s enchanted tattoo kit, crafting upgrades, and a kit for building mechanical devices. The tattoo equipment can create magical tattoos on willing subjects, though its results depend on the user’s skill. He has not applied one yet.
A new buckler can catch attacks and sometimes reflect them, provided Carl actually intercepts the blow. A Defiler piercing offers another way to interfere with gods: its Black Nimbus ability temporarily strips a target’s divine blessing. Carl acquires it here, but its application is not yet shown.
His greatest prize is the Scavenger’s Daughter, a divine patch for the back of his jacket. He sews it on after adding a smaller Peace Patch. The divine patch doubles the jacket’s stat bonuses and adds further Strength and Dexterity. It also reacts to nearby gods, and Mordecai warns that divine equipment can become dangerous when those conditional effects activate.

Soul Reaper stores souls from Carl’s melee kills, then spends a full charge on a powerful strike. Its capacity grows with use, but Mordecai warns about corruption. The patch also supplies a one-use Mysterious Bone Key that can open any dungeon lock. Using it would destroy the jacket and every attached patch, and permanently consume one of Carl’s bones. Meanwhile, reports from their friends confirm that Tran has a floating wheelchair and Britney remains badly burned and grieving Firas.
Chapter 4
Carl secures their locked starting stairs with warnings and a guild teleport before exploring Havana. Bomo can locate other stairs, but his floor-wide teleport is still on cooldown. Samantha scouts ahead while Carl keeps Mongo away from the unfamiliar traffic.
The replay becomes hazardous as soon as they disturb it. Donut knocks a ghost’s tangible possessions loose while the man continues walking as though nothing happened. Displaced objects cause crashes, and reports from other regions describe the same problem. Carl abandons the idea of deliberately creating a traffic pileup when the uncontrolled collisions become dangerous enough on their own.
Near the coast, a creature called the Experience attacks. Its supposed folklore description strikes Carl as poorly researched dungeon material. Donut wounds it, then tests her psychic attacks and makes it bite itself to death. They miss the opportunity to weaken and capture it, leaving all six monster slots empty.
The encounter awards a Combo card. It can temporarily merge two monster cards for a fight, but afterward neither original creature can return during that battle, and the utility card is consumed. Carl cannot store it because Donut, as squad leader, must hold their cards. Three unfamiliar crawlers approach before they can move on.
Chapter 5
The newcomers are Paz Lo, Anton Lopez, and Sister Ines Quiteria, a Cuban nun who chose a cat race. Ines restrains Anton and speaks for the group. Paz and Anton worship Ogun, whose followers cannot be charmed and gain stronger weapons. Donut immediately dislikes Ines’s cat breed, but Carl has more pressing reasons to understand the group’s fear.
Anton associates them with Prepotente and reports that Prepotente killed Osvaldo’s pet. Paz explains that the sixth floor’s opening broadcast also showed Donut threatening to cut throats and drain blood. Donut had been talking privately about grubs, but the edited scene made her appear to threaten people. Carl says they want cooperation or a peaceful separation, and Donut reluctantly explains what she meant.
Carl checks their story with friends. Ren describes Ines as a mother figure to the two cousins and reports that Anton’s player kills happened while defending her. Imani hears that the group opposed Quan on the fifth floor. Those accounts make Carl willing to attempt a limited alliance, though they cannot establish everything about the trio. Ines asks for help capturing a monk seal for their squad.
Chapter 6
Carl and Donut accompany Ines’s squad to the shore, where a monk seal named Yago offers a quest involving a war with land crabs. They challenge the dungeon’s confused account of Cuban wildlife and folklore without choosing either side. Their immediate goal remains capturing the seal.
Ines’s previous attempt failed because she fired a flag from a crossbow. Someone must physically hold the flag as it enters the weakened creature. Carl takes her flag and waits invisibly while the others attack. Paz draws Yago’s blows with a defensive stance that prevents him from attacking, but the seal’s earthquake and body slam force Carl to intervene. Paz then drops his stance to help finish weakening it.
Carl plants Ines’s flag while Yago is below the required health threshold. The seal becomes her squad’s card, not his. Ines must collect it to activate the capture. Yago can then be summoned for sixty seconds, retaining attacks such as Earthquake and Body Slam. Another monk seal approaches before Carl and Donut have secured their own first monster.
Chapter 7
The second seal, Geraldo, becomes Carl and Donut’s first captured monster. The two squads continue traveling together while keeping their separate membership and cards. Zev arranges an interview for Carl about his childhood and Coast Guard years, along with a virtual meeting for the Faction Wars teams. Odette is moving into orbit for the coming war.
Small creatures attack with slingshots. Carl fills Soul Reaper through melee kills and releases its first charge with a stomp. The strike obliterates his target, tears open a crater, and damages the surrounding area. Carl is left sick and shaking. Donut’s attempt to summon Geraldo fails because the full card system has not yet opened.
The fight supplies utility cards that can extend a summoned monster’s time or increase its health. Ines’s group receives its own rewards, including a single-use Flee card. At the Cuba Libro safe room, Ines declines Carl’s invitation to join the guild. They agree to meet again and consider exploring a nearby park after the recap broadcast.
Chapter 8
The broadcast conceals most of the floor’s events, so the crawlers must rely on one another for information. Cascadia finally explains G’hee combat. A deck needs six captured monsters to be complete, though a squad can begin fighting with fewer. Utility cards strengthen its own monsters, snares hinder opposing ones, mystic cards cast spells, and special cards provide other effects.
Drawing the deck locks it for the encounter and disables the squad leader’s normal spells and inventory. Donut will have to direct the cards while Carl protects her. The other squad members can still fight normally, and Donut retains movement, melee, and equipment already in hand. An opponent’s deck can force them into this mode even if they would rather avoid it. Donut regains her normal spells and inventory once all her cards have been played or discarded.
The initial hand contains four random cards, with replacements arriving during real-time combat. Summons last only for their allotted duration. A monster killed in battle cannot return during that encounter, but its card is restored afterward. Buffs and snares remain attached when a monster is summoned again in the same fight. Practice rooms are available, although they still consume single-use cards and do not erase long cooldowns.
Samantha reports finding someone who may be able to put her into the unfinished body of Signet’s mother. Unfortunately, the creature has swallowed her. She is inside Shi Maria, a spider-like demigoddess in the southern swamp. Carl finds the name in his lore book under aliases including the Bedlam Bride, with warnings about permanent madness and blindness. He considers capturing her despite Mordecai’s objections.
Chapter 9
Carl and Donut pay for practice with their small deck. The room’s generated enemies cannot directly injure them, but hazards and their own attacks remain dangerous. Mongo kills the first weak opponent before Donut can learn much, so they put him away for another attempt.
Donut discards Combo rather than spending it and summons Geraldo. The seal speaks and follows her directions, but a timer limits how long he can remain. She successfully increases his health with Stout and extends his duration with Time Extend. A second extension is rejected: an uncommon monster can hold only two utility effects at once.
Their opponent dissolves in its own tears before providing much resistance. They have learned how summoning and buffs work, but still have little experience using the deck under a serious attack.
Chapter 10
Ines objects to the dungeon turning religious traditions into entertainment. The park they planned to investigate is Colón Cemetery, a place connected to her family. She wants to go inside, but Carl persuades the group to examine its perimeter first. He prepares holy attacks and escape options rather than assuming every spirit will behave like an ordinary undead enemy.
Entering seals the exits and begins a compulsory quest. The cemetery is a settlement of ghommid, otherworldly beings driven mad by a sickness. Removing that sickness should restore or kill the affected inhabitants and allow the town to be claimed. Carl also notices strange remarks about quarantine and enhancement zones in the AI’s announcement, but those lines disappear when he copies the quest.
The spirits prove difficult to fight. Carl’s physical attacks pass through them, and one freezes his arm so that a blow could shatter it before draining his health. Ines removes the freezing effect while ranged and holy attacks cover their retreat. Donut uses Puddle Jumper to escape as the group retreats toward a safe room.
A barefoot level-130 figure follows. Although marked as hostile, he tells Carl that he is not a monster and steps into the safe room when Carl opens the door.
Chapter 11
The visitor is Asojano, a weakened former god associated with disease and healing. He came to someone who still remembered him, but his shrine has lost its power and he cannot leave. His presence is driving the ghommid mad. He asks Paz for help while the safe room steadily drains his health, then retreats before it kills him. Carl and Donut choose to investigate repairing the shrine instead of trying to capture him immediately.
Ines panics at the prospect of dealing with gods and asks Carl to make the situation stop. Carl wonders whether past religious trauma is involved, but does not know. Donut worries that a similar reaction could endanger them during another divine encounter.
New rewards include Hobbled, a single-use card that drastically shortens an enemy summon’s duration, and a magical headset that helps Donut sing accurately and amplify her bard spells. She tests the headset, then puts it away to keep it secret. Carl gives Louis a massage voucher intended for two people.
Louis says Britney’s face has healed, though she remains withdrawn after Firas’s death. Their friends encourage shared meals and support while Tran adjusts to his injuries. Katia distributes spare cards and warns that filling a deck with too many utilities can keep the important monsters buried. Zev then summons Carl for the interview about his life before the dungeon.
Chapter 12
Carl and Donut leave the dungeon for a production interview, passing through an orbital station to an underwater facility. Zev is accompanied by Harbinger, the caprid whom Carl recognizes from the Skull Empire’s attempt to arrange Maggie My’s attack. He now serves as the liaison required for meetings with sponsors. Quasar arrives furious that the interview was arranged without involving him.
The host is Rosetta Thagra, a former crawler and guide who recently escaped indenture. Carl recognizes her as the author of the ninth edition of the Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook. She appears nervous around Harbinger, making Carl wonder what she intends to say under his supervision.
During a break, Quasar reports that the transferred castle crushed half of Lemig Sortion’s army and now occupies disputed ground on Floor Nine. Its changelings, memory golems, and surviving residents are acting independently. Tina remains a dinosaur. Quasar says Ferdinand headed toward the city and was shot and killed. He also warns that their faction needs an adjutant capable of acting when its warlords are absent.
Rosetta returns dressed in a way that reminds Carl of his mother, then begins asking about her.
Chapter 13
Rosetta recounts the official account of Carl’s fifteenth birthday: his mother poisoned his father and killed herself. His father survived, later disappeared, and left Carl alone. Carl remembers returning afterward to find even the broken fish tank from that day still unrepaired.
When adults finally noticed his isolation, Carl implied that he might have killed his father. He wanted them to recognize that something had happened to him. Police found his father alive elsewhere, and Carl was finally treated as an abandoned child. Only then, he says, could he begin to feel his grief.
A boys’ home gave him food, shelter, and relative safety, but he rejects Rosetta’s suggestion that those improvements could make his mother’s death right. He joined the Coast Guard at eighteen and eventually returned to Seattle after his discharge. Rosetta places his experiences within the wider treatment of abandoned children.
A conversation about stew becomes a covert exchange. Rosetta emphasizes ingredients and substitutions using language Carl recognizes from Milk, an earlier Cookbook author. Carl answers with a phrase from Rosetta’s own response to Milk. Harbinger stops the interview, accuses them of coded cheating, and bans Rosetta from future crawler interviews.
Carl believes former Cookbook owners at the network are trying to tell him something, though he has not decoded it. Donut comforts him afterward. Zev remains angry at the interruption and says production is struggling under staffing cuts and restrictions on its helper AIs.
Chapter 14
Carl equips Bomo with a bulky assembly of ordinary armor and smoke-and-stun missiles. The separate, unenchanted pieces also serve a contingency he has not yet revealed. With supplies obtained through Li Na’s group, they push toward the cemetery’s central temple. Paz freezes in terror, forcing Bomo to carry him while stuns clear the route.
Carl releases a Soul Reaper charge into a donkey-headed spirit, but the creature splits instead of dying. Its detached head becomes a snake. After the others destroy the torso, Carl fights through the snake’s fear effect long enough to plant a flag. Skylar Spinach becomes their second monster, a spirit that can inflict afflictions and survive by splitting.
Inside the temple, seven ruined shrines surround a temporary soul gem that can restore only one of them. Asojano expects them to repair his shrine and release him. Paz and Anton discover that another belongs to Ogun, who orders his followers to restore it or face punishment. Carl prepares to fight Asojano while they attempt to obey Ogun, but the shrine pieces begin moving and the encounter starts.
Chapter 15
Oshun appears and overwhelms Carl and Anton with Charisma. Carl’s protection against charm spells cannot block her raw influence. Donut brings Carl out of the charm as Katia sends an urgent message: Eva placed the Crown of the Sepsis Whore on her. Under its rule, only one of Katia and Donut can descend from Floor Nine to Floor Ten. Katia believes restoring Yemaya’s shrine offers their only chance to escape that outcome.
A divine pause presents the competing rewards. Repairing Ogun’s shrine would spare his followers; repairing Asojano’s would cure the settlement. Other gods offer powerful abilities and protections, but Yemaya promises a special card and a boon from Eileithyia. Carl must choose one shrine, leaving the others unrestored.
When time resumes, Anton’s charmed movements carry an Ogun shrine piece outside. Carl puts his contingency into action. Donut strips Bomo’s separate armor pieces with Laundry Day, then animates them with Legionnaires of the Damned. The temporary metal army attacks Asojano while Donut repeatedly silences him and Carl blocks the approaching spirits.
With Ogun’s pieces lost, Ines commits to Yemaya. Carl captures the weakened Asojano, adding their third monster, but contact infects him with SlugPox. The animated armor helps complete Yemaya’s shrine, restoring her and curing the settlement. Carl’s own infection remains.
Paz and Anton receive Ogun’s punishment. Flaming anvil marks appear above them, and their health drains despite healing. The group tries to reach help, but Ogun arrives before they can escape.
Chapter 16
Ogun is invulnerable on this floor. He condemns Paz and Anton for disobeying him and helping Asojano reach safety. When Ines tries to intervene, he freezes her. He burns Paz’s face, removes his worship benefits, and makes the health drain permanent. Carl uses Black Nimbus on Anton and healing scrolls on both men, but Ogun crushes Anton’s head. Only respect for Emberus, Carl’s patron, restrains him from further retaliation.
Paz says that losing the influence over him has finally let him speak clearly. According to him, Ines’s cat race gradually compels companions to protect her and makes them forget learning about the effect. Worshipping Ogun was their failed attempt to resist it. He also says they were prisoners, not prison workers: Ines had poisoned other nuns, and Anton had killed a teammate for her.
Carl recognizes that his own willingness to forgive Ines may have been affected, though she also risked herself to protect them. He decides to warn the others and avoid her. Paz asks Carl not to prolong his dying.
When Ines can move again, she refuses to lose Paz. She drives a flag into his neck, turning him into a common G’hee card. Even she seems surprised that a crawler can be captured. Paz has been transformed; Anton is dead. Yemaya and Eileithyia arrive immediately afterward.
Chapter 17
The restored Yemaya gives Donut the Thief, a reusable card that steals an opponent’s card. Bomo asks to rejoin the Sledge, and Yemaya sends him to Floor Nine. Carl loses both his remaining bodyguard and Bomo’s help finding and reaching stairs.
Eileithyia’s sponsor is Huanxin Jinx, the same woman involved in Mordecai’s old betrayal. She grants protection against possession for the floor, along with healing and Constitution benefits that she can revoke. Her public quest merely asks Carl’s party to kill five spiders every day.
A hidden message reveals the real bargain. Huanxin knows about Katia’s crown and wants Carl to accept Odette as the faction’s adjutant, then remove the safety protections for crawlers on Floor Nine. She threatens his friends if he tells Odette or Mordecai, while promising help with the crown, survival through the twelfth floor, and eventual escape. Carl acknowledges the message without having secured any of its demands.
After the goddesses depart, Ines mourns Anton and leaves with Paz’s card. Carl explains her influence to Donut and arranges to speak privately with Katia. He still needs treatment for SlugPox.
Chapter 18
Carl seeks treatment for SlugPox at Club Vanquisher. He lacks the normal access ring, but worshipping Emberus permits limited entry, and a high cleric named Pater Coal admits him as an emergency. Coal first takes him to Emberus’s temple, where Carl vanishes from the live broadcast.
Coal says Emberus’s investigation of his son’s murder points toward Hellik and Apito. Apito is believed to be alive, leaving the existence of her Memorial Crystal unexplained. Coal tells Carl to examine the histories of Katia’s crossbow and Donut’s bracelet. Katia’s crossbow once belonged to Hekla, while Donut’s bracelet came from Bautista’s family. Carl does not yet have the full answer.
Emberus grants the Martyr’s Path for the rest of the floor. Carl can ignite a trail along his recent outdoor footsteps, although the god may revoke the boon. He then pays ten thousand gold for SlugPox treatment.
Back in the safe room, Katia has begun worshipping Eileithyia. She, Bautista, Mordecai, and Carl prepare to tell Donut about the crown. Carl stops Donut’s jokes about Paz’s capture so Katia can explain the danger they now share.
Chapter 19
Katia reveals that Eva forced the crown onto her. Donut fears another staged conflict between people she loves, but Katia promises they will not fight and says she would die first. Carl and Mordecai insist they will look for another outcome.
Katia has kept a celestial prize from flooding Larracos: a locked box containing the Orchid of Eileithyia’s Grace. After eating it, she would have to survive an hour unconscious at one percent health without healing. Eileithyia would then choose among three boons. One greatly increases Constitution, another makes her a noncombatant attendant on Floor Twelve, and the third creates a pregnancy that would remove her from the dungeon under child-protection rules.
Katia prefers becoming an attendant, though that would freeze her progression and inventory until the Ascendency. Worshipping the goddess has clarified the choices without guaranteeing that she will grant the one Katia wants.
Mordecai warns that disobeying Huanxin led to his brother’s death, though he does not tell them the full story. Two of the box’s three seals are already broken, through Eva’s death and the defeat of Imogen. The last requires a Guild of Suffering assassination. Katia has joined the guild and accepted a contract on Astrid, the Desperado Club’s assistant manager. Carl’s ring lets him join her on the job, but telling anyone else the target would cancel it. They must find a way to kill Astrid despite the club’s safe-room protections.
Chapter 20
Carl reassures Donut that they will keep searching for a way around the crown. They still have only three of their six monsters, and Samantha remains trapped with Shi Maria. The spider has expelled her from its stomach but caught her in a web. Prepotente wants Carl to read passages from the lore book, while Donut’s angry messages to Ines have made another attempt to discuss Paz more difficult.
Before their faction meeting, Carl discovers why Mordecai has been spending extra supply money. He has hired six attendants, using the positions to shelter children from the coming war. One is Ruby, a child suffering from compression sickness. Makeup on Mordecai’s face comes from playing with the children; his current cyclops form cannot see itself in a mirror.
Carl supports keeping the children safe despite the cost. Zev calls them away for a private conversation about Odette before the meeting.
Chapter 21
Zev warns Carl against choosing Odette as their adjutant. The role grants rules access and communication across faction teams, and its holder is meant to serve as a neutral observer. Zev expects adjutants to remain invulnerable even if crawler protections are removed. Mordecai’s hatred of Odette could provoke an attack that costs him his contract, leaving Carl without a manager and the children without their sanctuary.
Carl cannot explain Huanxin’s secret demand that he accept Odette. He enters the meeting needing a decision that will satisfy the sponsor without destroying his own group.
The nine faction teams gather under a strained Cascadia. Donut exchanges insults with Stalwart of the Skull Empire. Carl’s anger turns toward Rishi of the Blood Sultanate even after he learns that this war faction is separate from the naga royalty he hates.
The Madness representative is abruptly decapitated in the remote meeting room. A figure wearing Epitome Noflex’s appearance takes the seat, alarming her son, Epitome Tagg. Carl recognizes Juice Box beneath the borrowed form. Cascadia says the system will not let production directly stop this NPC under the present rules; the faction leaders must deal with her themselves.
Chapter 22
Juice Box thanks Carl for the castle transfer and confirms that many of her relatives survived. She demands a tenth Faction Wars team for unaffiliated NPCs, with the same protections and voting rights as everyone else. The motion is entered but has not passed. She leaves by teleport after setting off a small explosion, and an arrow strikes Stalwart elsewhere. The victims are expected to regenerate under the meeting’s protections.
Back in the dungeon, Carl and Donut travel south toward the swamp. They fulfill the day’s spider-killing obligation and gather more cards. Carl tries reading selected lore passages to Prepotente as a possible coded message, but receives no clear response. They also help assemble equipment for Mordecai’s young attendants.
At the Desperado Club, Carl and Katia privately consider ways to get Astrid outside safe-room protection. Katia intends to use her deck if Carl can separate Astrid from her guards. Carl decides to investigate the secret passages between club levels rather than announce the target or buy an expensive club facility.
Florin gives Donut a captured Unique monster that his own Charisma cannot control. Heyzoos, also called Uzi Jesus, combines ranged attacks with healing and the ability to resurrect another totem. He has already attacked Florin for trying to command him. Donut accepts the card as their fourth monster despite Carl’s concern about controlling him.
Chapter 23
Carl enters the Penis Parade and meets Damascus Steel, an ifrit dancer who recognizes his Ring of Divine Suffering tattoo. Damascus knows Katia has joined the guild and leads Carl through a concealed portal and another hidden door. Beyond the club’s boundary, Carl enters the narrow corridors of the Guild of Suffering.
An achievement turns into an unusually long speech from the AI about secret societies, exploited workers, resistance, and fighting for future generations. It appears to offer advice before abruptly retracting it. When Carl copies the achievement, the recorded text has already shrunk to an ordinary entry. The disappearing commentary resembles the cemetery announcement, but Carl still cannot tell exactly what the AI wants him to do.
Chapter 24
Carl tells Katia that a hidden voice in the guild offered him work and questioned whether he intended to kill her for the prize. He refused and asked for a map. Spiders then crawled over his arm, adding secret passages, markets, and drug dens to his map. Those routes may let them reach Astrid, but he intends to rescue Samantha first.
Donut receives a new tiara after they pay a jeweler to install a gemstone. The Tiara of the Inebriated Dragonfly improves Intelligence and potion cooldowns and gives her Hover. She can float only a few feet above the ground for a limited time, with a strict daily use limit, though it also protects her from falls. They keep her old tiara.

An immense crab migration blocks the southward road. A warrior named Raul meditates on a wrecked truck while the quest warns of an attack on the monk seals. Carl wants to capture him without turning the whole swarm against them.
Chapter 25
Carl uses Donut’s Hole spell, a precisely timed phasing effect, and the truck itself to isolate Raul. Fear effects stop the crab from mounting an effective response. Carl weakens him enough to plant a flag, and Donut accepts their fifth monster. Raul has the potential to grow stronger through cultivation, but doing so takes time and mana, and Carl doubts how well he will cope under pressure.
Before approaching Shi Maria, they study the warnings in the lore book. She supposedly killed her husband, denies it, and continues searching for him. Her attacks can cause permanent blindness or madness, so Mordecai prepares Liquid Therapy to protect them. Carl and Donut drink it and must take another dose each day to maintain protection. Mongo’s dose is not ready.
Samantha still believes the spider can restore her body, but Carl finds nothing in the listed abilities that confirms it. Meanwhile, a quest update says Ines warned the Monk Seal Abbot about the advancing crabs. The larger conflict remains unsettled.
Chapter 26
Carl and Donut reach Shi Maria’s web in the southern swamp. They keep Mongo stored because he lacks their protection against her mental attacks. The Bedlam Bride is a level-140 Reaper Spider Minion, a demigoddess of a kind usually found far deeper in the dungeon. Her Cockroach ability can restore her after a fatal blow.
Samantha imagines regaining her body and living with Louis. She also wants to find both her own missing husband and Shi Maria’s. Carl brings out the unfinished body of Signet’s mother, but Shi Maria does not restore it. Samantha admits more supplies would be needed. She has also explained the card system to the spider, who wants to be captured so she can leave the region.
Carl tells Samantha that she is part of their group and that rescuing her was the reason they came. He then offers Shi Maria a bargain: he will carry her off the floor if she harms only their enemies. If she attacks their friends or bystanders, he will tear up her card.
Shi Maria speaks directly through a central eye. She wants to reach Larracos, regain her freedom, and prove that she did not kill her husband. She admits she cannot restore Samantha herself, but claims a master Pulpmancer in Larracos could. An escort quest begins, and Shi Maria lets Carl start weakening her for capture.
Chapter 27
Shi Maria becomes their sixth monster, completing the squad. Carl warns Donut that neither the spider nor Samantha should be reminded that Larracos is flooded. The supposed expert who could restore Samantha may already be dead.
On the return journey, they acquire Damnation, which prevents an opposing monster from being summoned again during that fight after its current appearance, and Glow-Up, a consumable that can permanently preserve an active card’s altered state. Carl also puts Soul Reaper through more charge-and-release cycles, increasing its power.
Katia has gone quiet after scouting the club. Bautista says she found a hidden merchant and is sleeping off something. Carl contacts Imani rather than assuming Katia will be ready for the assassination. An invitation to Odette’s show adds another obligation before the floor’s next phase.
Cascadia explains the coming transfers. Each squad will choose another region and have forty-eight hours to obtain an exit key. In the final phase, keyholders return to their original region, while squads without keys can be sent to someone else’s stairs. Carl sees how the rules could force crawlers to fight one another for escape. The destructive Bone Key remains a last resort.
Chapter 28
Imani finds that Katia used a self-service drug den and still has hours left unconscious. Its memory-like bliss may increase Strength but can cost Intelligence. Imani suspects this is part of a longer pattern involving blitz sticks and Katia’s missing fingers. Carl feels responsible for telling her about the den, but Imani tells him to prepare for the next phase while she stays with Katia.
Carl and Donut take an eighteen-card deck into practice, leaving Glow-Up out. Their powerful new monsters immediately clash: Heyzoos shoots Shi Maria, and she impales him, removing him from the fight before he can help.
Their opponent is a puppet master that cannot be attacked until its eight reindeer puppets are destroyed. Skylar splits into additional forms while Shi Maria tears through the puppets with illusions, venom, and physical attacks. Her eye briefly reaches Carl even in the practice room, though his protection holds. Once the puppets are gone, she eats their controller.
They win, but their summons have shown little ability to work together. Mongo’s reaction to being hit also reminds Carl that he still needs protection before a real fight with Shi Maria.
Chapter 29
Repeated practice exposes the deck’s weaknesses. Asojano often ignores instructions, while Geraldo and Raul attack one another. Skylar is more dependable and can leave multiple temporary cards when its split forms time out. Shi Maria is devastating but cruel, and her Cockroach ability returns her card directly to Donut’s hand after a death. Heyzoos can revive a fallen totem with a fresh timer and cleared effects, but remains difficult to command.
Donut learns that D’Nadia has sold her sponsorship to a biological-waste company. Angry at being traded, she enters a harder practice mode distracted.
The opposing deckmaster draws faster, blocks Donut’s summons, reveals her hand, and removes Shi Maria from the encounter. Carl cannot attack the enemy leader while it has an active totem. Mongo cannot touch the opposing totems in this practice mode. Two summoned wolves rush them; Samantha interferes with one, but the other reaches Donut and ends the simulation in defeat. Their victories against weaker opponents had not prepared them for a deck built to disable theirs.
Chapter 30
Only hours remain before the next phase. More practice losses show how easily an opponent can disable their best monsters, though Carl and Donut finally beat one deckmaster by exploiting a moment when its leader becomes vulnerable. Odette’s show will lead directly into the transfer, leaving little time for the Astrid contract.
Katia returns sick and in withdrawal. Mordecai identifies four separate dungeon addictions and begins treating them. Some of the memory-altering effects require supervised treatment beyond an immediate cure. Her attributes have also changed, with gains in some areas and losses in others.
Mordecai privately points out that abandoning Katia could remove Donut’s rival under the crown’s rule, while acknowledging that helping her is right. Carl refuses to leave her to die. Bautista objects to continuing the mission in her condition and walks away, but Katia chooses to proceed. Imani, Donut, and Elle help her prepare. Elle warns Carl against pushing a vulnerable friend, while the contract’s secrecy prevents him from explaining the target.
Chapter 31
Carl brings Samantha into the Desperado Club with a new pass. She is meant to cause a disturbance at Charles the badger bartender’s counter while Carl prepares a hidden passage and Katia waits to ambush Astrid.
Astrid can sense danger and instantly summon guards, so Carl builds contingencies to relocate her reinforcements. He also finds a sealed room containing dangerous Vorpal creatures and reinforces its door. The trap depends on Astrid choosing the passage he expects her to use.
Katia asks whether he feels guilty. Astrid has done little to them personally, and Carl is planning her death while sheltering children elsewhere in the dungeon. He admits his discomfort but continues for Katia and Donut. Katia says killing Eva only made things worse and calls herself broken. Carl rejects that judgment and promises to keep helping her.
Chapter 32
The ambush fails when Astrid takes the main stairs instead of the hidden route. A containment alarm empties the club and draws guards to the casino. Carl tries to move a group of Turkish crawlers out of danger, but a drunken man attacks him and suffers reflected damage. Donut is too far away in practice to join the encounter.
Samantha has attracted Minge, a huge demon seeking revenge for her sister’s death. Samantha’s presence can turn normally one-way entrances to the Nothing into routes back out. Minge tears through the casino and kills guards. Astrid sensed the breach, which explains why she abandoned the expected passage.
Carl wants to flee, but Katia insists they must kill Astrid before the demon does or lose the contract. As guards fight Minge, some hit Carl’s relocation traps, and an explosion kills members of the reinforcements.
Astrid shelters frightened staff in the kitchen and warns Carl how to escape. She asks him to tell her husband, Hamlet, and protect their children if she dies. Hamlet is the Night Wyrm, the guild leader who ordered her assassination.
Katia arrives with summoned creatures and shifting monster forms. Astrid turns to shield Carl, and he tears off her wings. One of Katia’s creatures blinds her; Katia kills her while she pleads for her children. Katia takes the body as proof and asks Carl to pretend to chase her as she escapes in a monster’s shape.
Chapter 33
Katia uses up her short deck to recover normal inventory and transformation abilities, then stores Astrid’s body and heads for the guild entrance. Carl stays behind to help the trapped staff and cover the escape. Mordecai explains that Vorpal is a condition given to creatures deputized by gods to hunt demons. They can become dangerous to allies with demonic traits, including Li Na, and may explode when defeated.
Katia turns in the body, completing the contract and unlocking the orchid’s box. In the casino, Samantha has become attached to Charles through the opening in her doll body. Carl orders her to release him, but Minge catches the bartender and tears him apart.
Carl’s mechanical devices distract the demon and obscure the escape. One tries to open the Vorpal room but is destroyed before finishing. The creatures nevertheless emerge and attack Minge. Carl and Samantha flee upstairs with surviving NPCs, finding the strip club crowded with refugees and grieving performers.
Huanxin now conditions Katia’s intended boon on Carl’s adjutant choice. Katia decides to wait until Floor Nine before eating the orchid because she will not abandon her present squad. She has obtained the item, but the crown is still attached and the escape remains uncertain.
Chapter 34
Minge is dead, but the Vorpals continue destroying the club. Damascus asks Carl to rescue the dancers before management disposes of them. He reveals that Astrid was his mother, Hamlet is his father, and Anaconda is his brother. Their different species did not prevent them from being a family, and he says they were born in the dungeon.
Astrid had protected the performers and arranged better placements for them. Damascus knows Carl was involved in her death. Although he initially says he does not blame him, he leaves with Anaconda rather than accepting Carl’s rescue.
Carl hires thirteen displaced performers and staff through Meat Shields for two floors, using gold and a mercenary coupon. He brings them to the guildhall, where they need a Mercenary Arcade facility and take up available space. Other refugees remain behind.
While Carl is away, Donut makes room for a powerful Icelandic Jola card supplied by Katia. She combines two troublesome monsters with Combo, adds boosts, and uses Glow-Up to preserve the fused creature permanently. Shi Maria is furious because she wanted Glow-Up herself. Carl and Katia wonder whether Astrid’s family descended from indentured inhabitants, but they cannot yet establish its origin.
Chapter 35
Odette’s show turns the club disaster into entertainment. Visiting faction participants were ejected into flooded Larracos, where their protections keep reviving them only for them to die again. Carl says they could have left earlier. Their humiliation disrupts the faction’s preparations without permanently eliminating the trapped participants.
The broadcast reveals D’Nadia’s emergency motions to delete Larracos’s NPCs, bar crawlers from Faction Wars, and remove the Princess Posse or delete Carl and Donut. The system rejected all three without a vote. Donut is hurt by the hostility of her former sponsor.
Carl still needs Odette to become their adjutant to satisfy Huanxin. Odette explains that the role permits advice and rules access but no direct or indirect fighting, while retaining protection from harm. She then says she cannot serve this season and introduces three alternatives.
Chapter 36
Odette announces that she has sponsored Nekhebit and will leave her show to compete in the Celestial Ascendency. Footage shows crawlers returning an egg to the vulture-like goddess and restoring her. Carl suspects Odette anticipated Huanxin’s attempt to make her his adjutant and found another path into the game.
Her proposed replacements include interviewer Ripper Wonton, Baroness Victory, and Drick, who recently qualified as a referee. Donut favors Ripper, but Quasar argues for Victory’s experience as a judge and counselor in the Skull Empire.
Victory is related to people harmed by Carl’s earlier actions, yet says he acted within his rights. Carl chooses her. The Princess Posse now has an adjutant, but his promise to Huanxin remains unresolved.
Chapter 37
Donut is sent alone into the next phase while Carl remains with Odette during an unexpected private interval. Zev attributes the interruption to a ship incident and system stasis; Odette says a probe has forced an opening for them to speak. She reminds Carl that Rosetta’s television conversation also contained clues about destination choices. The more obvious food code helped distract attention from that message.
Carl confronts her about Huanxin and Katia. Odette says Huanxin wants revenge and does not sincerely intend to save Katia. She urges earlier use of the orchid, but Carl has reason to distrust both women’s promises.
Odette describes how she first wanted to help Mordecai because he reminded her of a lonely boy she had rejected as a child. Ambition later displaced that purpose. She admits arranging Huanxin’s involvement for money with help from Armita, a former party companion, then breaking the bargain during the incident that killed Uzzi. Odette gained freedom, but Huanxin retaliated by arranging the sale of Armita’s indenture contract.
She also recounts Mordecai’s despair after being separated from his own NPC family. He killed himself and was resurrected. Odette says she wants him free enough to make a meaningful choice about his life.
Odette says the crawl’s main purpose is harvesting fuel. Its entertainment profits are enormous but secondary, and the NPCs being exploited are real people. She says the suffering and waste can end, and that this season offers an opportunity centuries in the making. Carl has not accepted or fully understood the explanation when their time runs out.
On the screen, Donut fights Robert the Human. Geraldo attacks a doll distraction while Mongo kills the deckmaster, letting Donut collect his cards and sailor hat. Carl is transferred afterward.
Chapter 38
Carl joins Donut in the Florida Keys. She says she chose Iowa after following Rosetta’s clues about television filming locations, but the key remains marked there even though they arrived in Florida. The system responds by moving an enormous mound containing the key’s location into the Keys. Zev confirms the improvised relocation, and Carl worries that the island cannot support it.
Other friends also report destinations that do not match their choices. The squads have forty-eight hours from the phase’s start to obtain their keys, so they cannot wait for the floor to become orderly.
Emberus directs Carl to a temple of Nekhebit to ask about an old grudge against Apito. Huanxin sends a separate message acknowledging that Odette’s refusal was beyond Carl’s control. She says she will honor their bargain, while threatening Katia and Donut if she discovers collusion. The spider quest completes and offers a boon at Eileithyia’s temple, but no crown remedy has been delivered.
Nine tokens are needed to challenge the final key holder. Robert supplied the first, along with a sailor hat that speeds Donut’s card draws at the cost of replacing her tiara. Carl earns the second token by killing another opponent before it can activate its deck.
Chapter 39
Carl and Mongo defeat several more opponents before their decks begin. The sixth survives their opening attack, forcing Donut to summon the permanent fusion she created while Carl was away.
Lazarus-A-Bang-Bang combines Heyzoos and Asojano. It remembers both creatures but is less hostile, using a changing bazooka and helping Raul finish the enemy. The victory earns their sixth token.
Glow-Up preserved the fused monster’s boosts and long summoning duration, but imposed a cost: Lazarus can accept only two utility cards instead of the originals’ seven. Heyzoos and Asojano no longer remain as separate cards. Carl notices persistent itching beneath his divine patch while continuing to collect souls, then returns to the safe room to prepare for the unstable mound.
Chapter 40
The guildhall is crowded with rescued performers and children. Donut admits that leading the deck frightens her because a mistake could kill Carl or Mongo. Carl reassures her, and they take an ordinary nap together instead of relying entirely on restorative dungeon sleep. He remains troubled by Odette’s claims and his own decisions.
Carl’s rewards include scrolls for building permanent trenches and a strange little voodoo book. It registers other owners when they come nearby. Writing a message to one of them makes it appear on that person’s corresponding page; addressing himself shares the entry with everyone registered. The recipient must actually open and read it.
Carl tests the book with Donut. She finds it less convenient than normal chat, but he suspects there is a reason the dungeon has supplied another way to communicate.
After resting and renewing their protections, they approach the relocated mound. Its edges are collapsing into mud. Other key locations also come from the crawlers’ lives: Imani’s is at her mother’s house. Carl begins climbing toward the farm transplanted from Iowa.
Chapter 41
The seventh opponent is a Nightgaunt deckmaster accompanied by Quench Moths. Carl’s cloak aggravates it before the fighting begins. Donut summons Jola, a house-sized Yule Cat with a candle on its head. The moths converge on the flame, and the angry deckmaster exposes itself by attacking Carl directly. Jola eats it, securing the seventh token.
The defeated deck reveals a strategy built around immobilizing a target and making it glow so the moths swarm it. Donut keeps useful support cards but leaves the captured totems rather than changing their own monster squad.
They enter a huge turkey barn where heaters are still running despite the Florida heat. An ogre sleeps among thousands of birds. Mongo ignores commands and starts eating the turkeys, one of which is an invulnerable deckmaster. Mongo falls unconscious as it activates, and the ogre wakes with another deck. Carl and Donut must now face their final two token opponents at once.
Chapter 42
The turkey deckmaster turns the flock against them while the ogre, Sharp-Elbows, combines cards into a staff that raises dead birds as zombies. An enemy spell blocks magic for opposing minions. During card combat, that includes Carl, leaving him without his usual protective spells. His explosives also detonate too early because of the barn’s heat.
Melee kills still charge Soul Reaper, which is a skill rather than a spell. Carl releases it into the turkey leader, killing it. He stores its body, and the magic suppression ends. The force of the blow damages the barn and destabilizes the cliff beneath it.
Carl grabs unconscious Mongo as the floor gives way. A zombie bite wakes the dinosaur, who scrambles upward. Sharp-Elbows pins and impales Carl while an effect urges him to stop resisting. Raul destroys the necromantic staff, removing the ogre’s last active totem and its protection. Carl beheads the ogre, stores the body, and barely escapes the collapsing structure with Donut. They have defeated both opponents but still have to reach the key.
Chapter 43
Carl wakes after forty minutes. Donut insists on more healing because magical rest has not removed all his injuries and debuffs. She feared the final tokens were lost with the barn, but Carl confirms he kept both defeated bodies and their tokens. Zombie animals still roam the damaged farm.
While he was unconscious, Donut collected the enemy cards. She pairs the captured staff with Clockwork Triplicate and tests it on Geraldo, producing multiple seals. She also obtains Golden Combo, a reusable version of their earlier combination card, though she has not used it yet.
Donut offers to face the final opponent alone. Carl initially thinks she is worried about his injuries, then recognizes the trailer and his father’s motorcycle. She wants to spare him another confrontation with his past. He chooses to go with her.
Chapter 44
A vending machine outside the trailer demands all nine tokens for the final fight and warns that the choice cannot be reversed. Carl takes his father’s motorcycle into inventory. Donut inserts the tokens, starting a forty-two-minute countdown before the key holder appears.
The trailer’s scene belongs to a different season from the surrounding farm. Its physical rules also differ from the replay they have been exploring, with some changes waiting for the recorded moment to catch up. Carl removes vehicles and other objects while an invisible boundary prevents them from leaving.
Donut offers to wait outside so Carl can enter privately. Neither of them can assume the household represents people still alive in the present.
Chapter 45
Inside, Carl finds a recorded version of his father dying in a hospital bed, still cruel to the people around him. The ghost cannot hear or see Carl. Carl speaks to him anyway, confronting a frail man who once seemed impossible to defy. The replay shows a younger woman administering a fatal injection. Carl is witnessing his father’s earlier death, not causing it.
A small boy named Asher appears, and family photographs confirm that he is Carl’s younger half-brother. The woman from the replay is his father’s later wife and Asher’s mother. Carl cannot touch or comfort Asher, but promises aloud that he is not forgotten. He takes drawings and photographs, wondering what happened to the child when the collapse came.
Carl collects family possessions and other useful objects, then sets the trailer on fire. He wants to clear the cramped building before their large summons fight the key holder. He joins Donut outside with no answer about Asher’s current fate.
Chapter 46
The AI replaces the expected encounter with a nine-headed hydra wearing faces from Carl’s life, including Asher. Production says it has lost control. The system claims it can evade restrictions on recreated children by altering their forms, and says the dungeon already uses harvested biological material to make monsters.
Its explanation expands into a history of the macro AIs. It says the mantises found ancient technology, raised infant AIs in nursery stars, and installed them in planetary systems. It describes a newer method of replacing unwanted behavior with imposed corrections, then identifies itself as a secondhand system from an amusement park.
Only the Judge Lucian head acts as the deckmaster; the other heads attack as minions. Severed heads regrow and change position. Mordecai explains that each provides a different resistance, so Carl must identify which one is preventing a lasting kill.
The enemy summons distorted versions of Carl and an attractive cat called King Croissant. Lucian also steals Donut’s staff. Carl identifies the head resembling Bea’s mother as the source of the hydra’s fire resistance. He removes it, then burns the exposed neck. Fire spreads through the hydra and stops its regeneration, but engulfs Carl as well.
Shi Maria devours heads and, at Carl’s request, destroys Asher’s suffering likeness. Her eye then connects with Carl despite his protective potion. His hand tattoos change, and he senses that she has left something inside him, though he cannot yet explain it. Hostile copies produced by the stolen staff kill her, returning her card to Donut through Cockroach.
Raul appears but turns on Carl after identifying him as a demon. The cause remains unclear. The fire finishes the last heads, ending the battle while Carl survives badly burned.
Chapter 47
Carl and Donut collect the floor key. He explains how associations with the familiar faces helped him work out the hydra’s elemental attacks. Donut then reveals that Bea had known about Asher through Carl’s later stepmother and concealed it. She also recalls Bea using Carl’s account to reject a coworker and pressure his boss into firing her. Carl is furious but recognizes how the game keeps pulling them back into old pain.
Emberus promotes him to Devotee. Ambient heat no longer harms him, but direct fire and lava remain dangerous. His tithe rises, and he gains Self-Immolation, a brief burst of Sheol Fire that still risks igniting his clothes or surroundings. The reward does not make him universally fireproof.
The champion’s reward adds two reserve monster slots while allowing only six active totems. Donut destroys the unwanted King Croissant and another captured card, but the distorted Alpha Male Carl and a copy of Frank Q fill the reserves. Carl insists that the Frank card is a copy, not the real man brought back to life.
Chapter 48
Other squads report very different key hunts. Some have succeeded; Imani’s group is still searching. Louis organizes a Christmas celebration in the guildhall for the survivors and rescued children. Carl initially struggles with the timing, then accepts the value of giving everyone something beyond the next fight. He supplies ordinary turkeys for dinner while keeping the undead ones separate.

Orren appears with Cascadia as an outside negotiator. He describes Primal Engines that regulate planets and macro AIs that eventually become independent. According to him, the crawl guides those developing systems. He says Borant has negotiated the return of most seized controls in exchange for concessions, allowing the season to continue.
Six faction teams try to withdraw from the coming war. The system refuses while Earth remains under quarantine. Carl receives an emergency sponsor-box notice, immediately followed by its seizure and an override of that seizure. He does not yet know what the box contains.
Chapter 49
Carl puts Asher’s airplane drawing in his bare room alongside a plant and the arcade cabinet taken from the trailer. His rewards include trench-building supplies, a sleep wand, and the Book Burner patch, which can suppress a named spell for thirty hours. He receives the patch without sewing it on yet.
The emergency sponsor box contains an invitation to Christmas breakfast at a shelter in Homestead, Florida. Pets are forbidden, so Carl decides to investigate alone on his father’s recovered motorcycle.
Zev says the sponsor and everyone involved with the intercepted box have disappeared. She warns Carl away from the failsafe and says the quarantine may cover the solar system, while much of the production staff are elsewhere. Carl rides toward the shelter in search of answers.
Chapter 50
Carl rides through nearly empty reconstructed roads and stops beside the memory of an elderly dog left at a closed gas station. He thinks about people he overlooked during his last real Christmas, including a neighbor whose wife had died. At the shelter, he remembers spending his eighteenth birthday in a place like it.
Writing near the entrance includes instructions in Syndicate Standard. It tells him to attend breakfast and listen to a man in a red hat. Carl waits overnight while messages describe the guild’s party and Zev warns that the real Syndicate council is on Earth amid a dispute over Residuals.
At breakfast, the man in the red hat takes sugar from a blue bag inside a plastic bin. Carl collects the bin before the man begins speaking to a future crawler.
Chapter 51
The speaker calls himself Goff, although the human body is known as Paulie. He does not look toward Carl. The speech was rehearsed and repeated in the hope that a future memory floor would preserve it.
Goff claims that thousands of beings like him infiltrate seeded planets before a crawl, attract the organizers’ attention, and enter the dungeon to pass on information before dying. He says he shares Paulie’s memories and is biologically a gondii, like the Valtay, while belonging to a different group. Rival sides, he claims, exist throughout civilizations with Primal Engines. Carl is teleported away before hearing the complete explanation.
Orren has taken him to the Desperado Club. He claims the bin holds neural enhancers, including a lethal one, and that the sponsors arranged a trap intended to make the AI kill everyone. He describes the Residuals as fanatics and says Agatha belongs to a different kind. The AI is still listening to the speech, and Carl has not inspected the bin or verified Orren’s accusations.
Quasar defends Carl’s legal claim to what he looted and negotiates compensation. In exchange for the intercepted equipment, Carl receives a wand-recharge scroll, three Cracker Jack scrolls, and permission to keep four items until the floor collapses. The communication equipment must be surrendered. Orren refuses his request for the Gate of the Feral Gods. Carl then asks to return to the abandoned dog instead of going straight to the safe room.
Chapter 52
A brief return to Carl’s earlier temple visit reveals that he asked Pater Coal to delay his SlugPox treatment. His reason is not yet explained.
In the present, Carl has spent two Cracker Jack scrolls to unlock alien shields for himself and Donut. His creates a close-fitting physical barrier but does not stop spells aimed at his body or protect beneath his feet. Donut’s bubble can also protect a vehicle more weakly. Both have limits that remain untested in a real fight.
Training with the rescued performers reveals another possibility. Doctor Bones can permanently bind weak-minded recruits to military service with Conscript, provided they have not already pledged to another army. Carl looks for more mercenary space, though a large expansion is beyond his budget.
Imani has lost all four teammates. A recording shows Randall burning himself during combat; when Imani freezes him, her own totem’s scream kills all four immobilized allies. The system gives her four player-killer marks. She then gives up on the personal family encounter that follows. Elle comforts her, while Carl refuses to treat the AI as a reliable ally simply because they share enemies.
The final phase returns keyholders to their original regions. Only two of the five squads in Cuba have keys, each usable for its own squad alone. Imani chooses Cuba to stay near friends, but Quan corners her near Ines’s church. Carl and Donut go to help before he can take Ines’s key.
Chapter 53
The new rules make keys prizes in fights between squads. A keyless group can still escape with Flee. If a group already has a key, using Flee gives a random one of its keys to the opponent. Keys cannot otherwise be handed over voluntarily.
Carl tells Donut to escape and surrender their key if his plan fails. He would then rely on the Scavenger’s Daughter’s Bone Key, despite the destruction and permanent injury its use would cost him.
Carl rides toward Imani with Samantha while Donut follows on Mongo. Someone uses Eye in the Sky to expose their location, removing the chance of a quiet approach. Imani gets out of the church amid fighting between seals and crabs. Carl does not want to make his friends fight for passage, but the floor is arranging exactly that pressure around the exits.
Chapter 54
Elle warns that Imani may be ready to sacrifice herself. As Carl approaches the coast, Samantha finds a vast gathering of seals, crabs, zombies, and a giant snake carrying Ines. Music appears to hold the creatures under control.
The seal-and-crab war has become a new disaster. Their old quest fails, replaced by an order to reach the stairs without being dragged into hell. Demons are being expelled into recently dead or weakened bodies. Even these diminished shells can seize people and drag them into Sheol.
Mordecai urges Carl to kill Quan before a demon carries him into Sheol, where any key on him would be lost. Carl asks Samantha to touch Ines so his returning storage spell can retrieve them together. He prepares traps and tells Donut to make copies of Mongo with the staff. Samantha announces that she has strengthened the return spell herself.
Chapter 55
Samantha’s altered spell pulls far more than Ines. The giant snake, thousands of animals, corpses, and other nearby bodies are dragged across the battlefield. The move breaks Ines’s control. It also triggers a danger described in the Cookbook: teleporting a demon’s occupied shell can release the demon at full strength. The transported bodies arrive without their occupants, leaving dozens of freed demons behind at the original site.
The broadcast explains how the disaster spread. Ines used a powerful charm boon to control the snake, Madre de Aguas, and the creatures connected to it. One of Carl’s necromantic turkeys infected a giant fish, spreading the condition through the water. Continued deaths created more shells for expelled demons, which Ines’s charm could control until Samantha’s recall disrupted it.
The system declares a Survival Royale with eight sides and demands alliance choices. Ines accuses Carl of stealing her minions, but he asks her to ally with him against the demons. The voodoo book registers Ines and Quan as nearby owners. Alliances lock, and the battle begins.
Chapter 56
A flashback reveals Carl’s arrangement with Emberus’s temple. He paid ten thousand gold and borrowed almost a million more to upgrade his old Strength ring. The resulting Pauper’s Ring protects an Emberus worshipper from many diseases and health-draining effects, but burdens the wearer with debt and prevents Carl from simply renouncing his god. A wearer who does not worship Emberus instead receives nearby sufferers’ debuffs.
Quan joins the battle. Carl chooses Ines as an ally, but she chooses no one, penalizing him. Quan reads the opposing hands and forces Ines to play Flee, putting her key at stake. His turtle clears the crowded battlefield while Donut summons Lazarus.
Before Quan can finish manipulating Donut’s hand, Carl hits him with Super Spreader, the ability that copies his own debuffs onto another target, passing SlugPox to Quan. Quan turns Donut’s hand into Flee cards and forces her retreat as well. Both Cuban keys pass to him.
Carl and Donut arrive in woodland without a key. Carl asks Imani and Ren to delay Quan while the slug infection worsens, and tells Donut to prepare a combined totem for another battle.
Chapter 57
Donut insists they must save Imani and Ren as well as themselves. Carl investigates ways around the exit restrictions, but teleport traps cannot be placed inside stairwell chambers. Even giving away the Bone Key would depend on untested rules and cost Carl a permanent injury.
He develops a different way to reach Quan. Small spider automatons carry the destinations for his teleport traps, letting him move the arrival points after setting them. Some are placed inside Samantha, whose discharge does not burn the metal devices.
Donut stays near a group of duendes so she can begin a separate card battle and prepare Golden Combo. Ren reports that Quan is invisible at the capitol entrance, though her husband Chuluuna can see him. Carl throws Samantha toward the building and enters a trap to follow.
Chapter 58
Carl reaches the capitol through a spider-mounted trap. Donut begins her separate battle outside, allowing her summons to fight near him without entering Quan’s match against Ren. Meanwhile, Madre de Aguas dies and rises, and the demon prince Amayon enters the realm. His arrival activates the Scavenger’s Daughter and temporarily turns Carl’s fire spells into Sheol fire.
Quan exchanges monsters with Ren and takes control of Wiggle, her temporarily immortal death worm. It consumes opposing creatures and tears Chuluuna apart. Donut has combined Lazarus with Skylar; when the worm swallows that fusion, Skylar’s splitting ability breaks the temporary fusion into golden forms, including Uzi Jesus.
Jola ignores Carl’s instructions and addresses Quan in Icelandic. Her Fashion Critic strips his equipment. Uzi Jesus rains down attacks while Quan sprouts slugs and suffers worsening debuffs. Carl tells Donut to end her separate battle before Jola kills him.
Carl finds Quan helpless and tears off his remaining arm. A protective ring is still attached to the severed hand, so Carl disposes of it before it can counter the disease. Quan dies before the intended interrogation. Both keys pass to Donut’s squad.
Ren survives, but Chuluuna is dead. A new warning gives them only five minutes before the damaged capitol entrance becomes unusable and its key disappears.
Chapter 59
Carl and Ren cannot find a safe way to transfer the correct key in time. Starting a battle and forcing Donut to Flee would surrender a random key and send her squad elsewhere, risking everyone’s escape. Ren refuses Carl’s suggestion that they try another region. She believes his chance to fight back through Faction Wars matters more now.
The capitol entrance collapses, destroying its associated keys. Only the church key remains. Carl’s immediate plan to save the whole group has failed.
Ren gives him her equipment, supplies, cards, and flamethrower. She explains that Garret gains a different weakness each time he regenerates, then triggers another regeneration and entrusts the revived pet to Carl. His new vulnerability is Reaper Gaze.
She also hands over Glow-Up and a special card called Midnight Express. Ren intends to deny the show its expected ending, while her teammate Khulan grieves beside Chuluuna’s body. Before Carl leaves, Ren admits cheating Donut at the pet show and calls Mongo the rightful champion. Carl promises to make the people responsible suffer.
Chapter 60
Carl takes Quan’s remaining money and equipment, leaving the cursed protective ring. Before departing, he considers marking Ren or Khulan with the Ring of Divine Suffering to gain from a death, but rejects the idea. The delay would reveal what he intended.
An explosion destroys the capitol as he leaves. Tserendolgor’s name appears on the death feed, confirming Ren’s death. Her final message asks him to make their enemies pay. Carl rejoins the others carrying Garret and cannot immediately bring himself to explain the loss to Donut.
Ines threatens the remaining entrance at the church. She believes allowing anyone to leave will unleash greater evil and demands that Carl come to the FOSCA building. She offers to save him through death while excluding Donut. Donut identifies the Nebulars as Ines’s sponsors and suspects they have deliberately restored her earlier instability.
Imani reports powerful demons outside the church labeled as Ines’s minions. Ines threatens to destroy the entrance unless Carl obeys, while Amayon also calls him toward the building.
Chapter 61
Reports from other regions confirm that digging around a ruined entrance does not provide access. The stairs themselves are indestructible, but their sealed chambers cannot simply be opened with Hole or phasing magic. Most squads are stranded without keys.
Amayon begins creating an enormous portal in the sky. Samantha says Ines intended a charm effect but cannot fully control him. Ines is supplying the energy for something else. Carl asks the crawler network to buy trench-building scrolls while he works through a possible escape.
Demon portals carry victims into Sheol along with things touching them. Once a demon has collected enough souls, it can return and close its portal. Carl reveals that he deliberately infected his regenerating mercenaries with Super Spreader, producing giant slugs during repeated combat and recovery. Doctor Bones can conscript some of those slugs.
Carl asks Imani to send controlled slugs toward the demons in batches so they can satisfy the demons’ need for victims. Imani insists on curing the infected mercenaries first. Prepotente fears the growing portal may affect the whole floor; Carl says his rescue plan needs it to do exactly that.

Chapter 62
Carl and Prepotente propose clearing the buildings and ground around stairwell chambers. If Amayon’s portal removes their encasements while leaving the indestructible stairs behind, crawlers may be able to descend without keys. Carl initially presents the idea too confidently, then admits to everyone that it is an uncertain chance. Prepotente supports trying it but warns of severe risks during the transfer.
Carl asks keyholders to leave while they can and urges everyone else to cooperate. Imani reports that the slugs are already helping send demons back, while Li Jun reports the appearance of Ysalte, whom Samantha recognizes as her mother.
A new quest explains that Amayon is trapped inside the snake’s body. His portal will engulf Cuba unless they intervene. Freeing him would restart the timer and expand the event to the whole world. He is presently invulnerable, so killing him is not an available solution.
Carl plans to remove Ines, free Amayon, make the portal large enough to reach every region, and shelter beneath a prepared stairwell chamber. Donut chooses to stay with him despite their remaining chance to use the church key.
Chapter 63
The slugs have cleared the demons from the church, and more than twenty friends arrive through Imani’s personal space. Lucia Mar supplied upgraded Doggie Doors that can connect a room to exits its owner has already used on the same floor. Imani’s connection to the church gives the others a route into Cuba.
Li Jun describes Lucia killing many squads in Beijing before asking others for help. Florin’s kindness helped persuade her to share the upgrades, even though she still threatened Donut and Mongo on the next floor. Her assistance has nevertheless brought Carl’s friends together.
The allies refuse to leave him to handle the plan alone, even where they still have keys. They also reject his idea of sacrificing a bone to save only Imani. Donut changes into her Dragonfly tiara and hovers beside Tran’s wheelchair.
Seeing everyone together breaks the isolation Carl has felt throughout the memory floor. He looks at Katia and again wants an answer beyond choosing between the crown and dependence on Huanxin.
Chapter 64
Mordecai identifies Ysalte as the goddess sponsored by the Nebulars, who also back Ines. He says they worship the ancient central AI, condemn other crawls as blasphemy, and seek the council seat that an Ascendency victory would provide. Their claimed pacifism exists alongside a doctrine of destroying rival religions and planets that host crawls.
The group prepares the church chamber while the assault party moves toward FOSCA. Katia is still struggling after her addiction crisis, and the orchid has strained her relationship with Bautista. She and Carl remain divided over whether another escape is possible.
Carl distributes captured weapons to the mercenaries. Prepotente warns him to read the quest’s completion conditions carefully and make the portal strong enough. Before descending to Floor Nine, he says he no longer intends to kill Carl over Miriam’s death. He now expects Carl’s help against those truly responsible. Donut finishes a preparatory card battle, and the group approaches Ines.
Chapter 65
Donut begins casting Minion Army, leaving her rooted in place while Imani and Samantha strengthen the spell. The slugs charge too early and draw demons back toward them. Elle responds with Graupel, a powerful storm that destroys occupied shells and earns her six levels. Her form changes as she gains a new connection to the four seasons.
Donut completes the charm, turning many demons against one another. The group enters FOSCA and climbs toward Ines. Carl sends his last spider automaton farther up so it can eventually touch the snake and provide the teleport destination needed to free Amayon.
Carl and the melee fighters advance while their deck leaders remain behind. When Ines charges, Carl puts her to sleep with his wand. Louis volunteers to kill her before she wakes and uses a dagger. A divine mark identifies him as the killer of Ysalte’s bard, making him the target of the goddess’s revenge.
Chapter 66
Ysalte confronts the group as the Goddess of Hopelessness and Insanity. Her sponsor is not occupying her body, and she is protected from harm on this floor. Her presence turns potions to vinegar. She targets Louis and argues with Samantha, whose invulnerable head deflects the goddess’s pickaxe.
The giant snake crashes through the building, letting Carl’s automaton reach it. Teleporting the shell releases Amayon’s true, vastly stronger form. It does not free him from Ysalte, who still controls him.
A new quest reveals that Ysalte was Amayon’s lover and is the mother of his child. She wants to take him back to the Ascendency as her retainer. If her control remains when the ten-minute countdown expires, both will depart and the stranded crawlers will lose their escape route.
Five crawler squads enter a final card battle against the two protected beings. They must remove Amayon’s six totems, give him enough power to begin his return spell, and stop Ysalte from taking him away. Ysalte receives a modified form of Ines’s deck.
Chapter 67
Donut begins by stealing Banjo, a powerful fighter from Amayon’s deck. Ysalte summons Ines’s monk seal, Yago, and steals cards from the crawlers, including their inactive reserves. A stronger version of Frank appears on her side, showing that even the cards Donut was not planning to use can become threats.
Carl’s alien shield protects him during an attack before its charge runs out. Banjo pulls him out of danger. Donut forces Amayon to discard his final card, while Tran destroys the remaining rock creature with his wheelchair weapon and asks Imani to heal his injuries.
The battle pauses with a new problem. Demon Eviction has depleted the supply of comparable souls Amayon needs for his return spell. The crawlers must replace that supply and strengthen him before the countdown ends. Until then, they must prevent him from trying another way out.
Carl checks that Donut has Ren’s Midnight Express card and prepares to leave the rooftop while the others hold Amayon in place.
Chapter 68
Carl jumps from the tower, using Samantha to slow his fall and guide him toward the beach. Donut plays Midnight Express, giving him control of the deck for three minutes while she regains her own spells and inventory. He summons Raul and Alpha Male Carl.
The AI has already decided to count individual crab reproductive cells as souls. Carl intends to use that rule to replace what Amayon is missing. Under pressure from Alpha Carl, Raul releases them into the ocean.
Carl also recalls Donut preserving another Lazarus-and-Skylar combination with Ren’s Glow-Up card. That stronger form may let them bring a useful companion to the next floor.
On the rooftop, Ysalte summons a version of Paz, who joins Katia inside her shield. Carl now needs a near-fatal injury to activate the Martyr’s Path. Alpha Carl does not understand the required attack, so Carl chooses to teleport into Samantha’s neck opening and use its dangerous discharge. He tells her to spit him out when the fire begins.
Midnight Express expires and Donut regains the deck before Carl takes the teleport. Raul and Alpha Carl remain on the beach until their summoning time runs out.
Chapter 69
Carl lands inside Samantha and suffers severe damage. His health drops below five percent just after the timer appears to run out, triggering the Martyr’s Path along his outdoor footsteps. The Scavenger’s Daughter turns those flames into Sheol fire, which strengthens Amayon. Carl heals while his health is still dangerously low.
At the same time, Katia gives Paz an explosive arrow and sends him into Ysalte’s body. The detonation kills her, with Paz receiving the credit. The system creates her memorial crystal elsewhere and marks him for death by most other gods. Her control over Amayon ends, and the first part of the quest completes. The spoiled potions return with stronger effects.
Amayon is holding Carl and Samantha while a spell makes the demon strike himself. Carl bargains for release and asks who murdered Geryun. Amayon offers to name the killer if Emberus helps him kill his three brothers, withholding the answer for now.
The demon has his restored soul supply and the strength from Sheol fire, but refuses to protect the crawlers. He considers his debt paid and intends to scour the world. When the self-striking spell ends, he drops Carl and Samantha toward the burning ground.
Chapter 70
Samantha helps Carl glide back to the tower. The group must descend through its wrecked floors to reach Imani and Tran. Carl stops attacks on Amayon because their escape still depends on him completing the world-spanning portal.
A demon drags Lazarus into Sheol. This time the totem is eliminated, overriding its normal return and Skylar’s splitting protection. Active battles prevent an easy retreat; Imani has no Flee card, and Katia cannot safely carry Tran out through the surrounding fire. The Scavenger’s Daughter is ready to release its stored attack, but Carl has delayed firing it while surrounded by friends.
Carl asks Donut to draw toward Hole in the Bag while combining Shi Maria and Alpha Carl to hold back the demons. She summons both and plays Golden Combo. Shi Maria deliberately kills Alpha Carl at the instant of fusion. The system replaces the missing target with Carl, combining him with the spider against his will.
Chapter 71
The fusion gives Shi Maria control of Carl’s transformed body for up to three minutes. Death during it would be permanent. She can reach his inventory, including the hidden Cookbook and weapons he has kept in reserve, and threatens his friends unless he brings her to the next floor.
She makes Carl cast Self-Immolation, burning the area and badly injuring Katia and Mongo. Donut cannot simply dismiss the summon because doing so would kill Carl. Li Jun is struck in the eye while trying to intervene.
Shi Maria alters potions and uses Carl’s crafting materials to create a tattoo on his chest. She says destroying her card will not remove the part of her now attached to him. When the fusion expires, the spider returns to the deck, leaving a pulsing eye that sinks into his skin.
The tattoo is named the Eye of the Bedlam Bride but offers no useful explanation. Li Na uses the altered potions to treat Li Jun. Carl asks whether Katia and Mongo survived, then loses consciousness.
Chapter 72
Carl wakes in Louis’s arms. Mongo is alive but badly burned and missing a wing. Mordecai wants to study the enhanced potion before using it to attempt regrowth. Katia survives, and Li Jun can use his injured eye again. Their immediate crawler group has made it through, although several performers and many slugs died.
Once the battle ends, Donut tears Shi Maria’s card. Katia explains that she recovered Paz’s card and used the Bolt of Ophiotaurus to improve his equipment before he attacked Ysalte. Now called Paz the God Predator, he has reached level 101. Donut also tears his card, receiving no player-killer mark.
Amayon’s spell now covers the entire floor. It will pull away the world around the indestructible stairs, but survivors must shelter beneath chambers whose surroundings have been cleared sufficiently. Each crawler must use the stairs assigned to their own region. The new room connections let the allies disperse, leaving Carl, Donut, and Imani beneath the church chamber.
Carl uses the Princess Posse’s final emergency action to resolve the stalled Faction Wars votes. The AI puts them to the audience. Viewers approve longer-range attacks, faster pet leveling, a larger battlefield, and the removal of faction sponsors’ safety protections. They also approve a protected tenth team for NPCs, based in Larracos with Ferdinand named king. A proposal to reduce celestial summons fails, leaving fifteen per team.
Beneath the church, Imani thanks Carl and Donut for staying with her. Donut still has the untested Key to the City card, and both want another answer to Katia’s crown dilemma. Shi Maria’s voice remains inside Carl despite the destruction of her card. She warns him that he never discharged the Scavenger’s Daughter and says she still needs him alive.
The portal strips away the structures above them. The quests complete, and Carl, Donut, and Imani arrive on the ninth floor for Faction Wars.
Epilogue
Before the collapse, Agatha receives word that Earth’s crawl has begun earlier than expected. She is Agent 22, living inside a human body after years away from her own collective. She is neither Valtay nor an agent of the Apothecary. She killed one of that organization’s operatives and stole its equipment and access.
Agatha’s people want to recruit the AI, which she regards as an enslaved Primal. Her memories describe her species being stolen and repurposed, but the victory she seeks would eliminate biological life throughout the universe. The Apothecary’s competing agents pursue a different plan involving altered information and secret crawler upgrades. Another agent, now using Alexandro’s name, has infiltrated an expedition near Mumbai.
The council debates activating the failsafe. Princess Formidable urges it, while Prime Minister Glory says it would destroy Earth’s entire solar system and warns of a wider collapse if the central AI stopped functioning. The council does not accept the alleged danger as sufficient reason to act. Formidable is silenced by a vote, and the factions prepare a different response.
Formidable watches private armies boarding the dungeon under the reinforcement plan. More than 150,000 soldiers may join early, intended to overwhelm the surviving crawlers and end the season.
Elsewhere, Tipid and Rosetta travel aboard the renamed Homecoming Queen while Doctor Hu watches remotely. Disguised as Long Haul Biological Waste, the ship carries 50,000 former crawlers approved to join the Princess Posse. The veterans return with hopes of revenge and fear of the dungeon. Their relationship with the new NPC faction remains uncertain as onboarding is cleared.
